Maps
•A map is a representation of a place. It is NOT the place.
Example: I drew a map of my neighborhood.
Cartographer
• A person who makes maps to represent the earth.
Example: Gerardus Mercator developed his first map in 1569.

an event or experience.
Example: I told the principal my account of the fight in the hallway.
Why is a map not a place?
• People who create maps select the information they want to put on their maps. • Therefore, people’s maps can look
different from one another.• It is the cartographer’s ACCOUNT of a

Maps have been used for centuries to navigate the world.
Since the world is a sphere, a globe is the best way to represent the earth.
