•As an IB school we will explore Community & Service, the Penny Harvest as well as investigate our educational community while reading the book.
•We hope to partner with our other IB schools in Littleton, Field Elementary and Littleton High School, to make a district wide “Sharing our Humanity” project with this book, or books with similar themes.

What is LANGUAGE!?
• LANGUAGE! is a research-based literacy program that reflects the Reading First Initiative– For more on Reading First, visit:
http://www.ed.gov/programs/readingfirst/index.html– For more on LANGUAGE!, visit: www.sopriswest.com
20% of elementary students nationwide have significant problems learning to read.
Over 40% of elementary students do not read fluently enough to engage in reading
(Louisa C. Moats, 1999. Teaching Reading is Rocket Science)
What does LANGUAGE! teach?
• LANGUAGE! provides direct instruction in 6 areas of Language Arts:– Phonemic Awareness & Phonics– Word Recognition & Spelling– Vocabulary & Morphology– Grammar & Usage– Listening & Reading Comprehension– Speaking & Writing
From sound to text in every lesson
Why should a child take LANGUAGE!?
• Students need reading and writing skills in all subject areas– They may have trouble reading textbooks that are
written at grade level– They may not be able to accurately read tests or
other class materials– They may struggle to put their thoughts into words
or comprehend what they read
LANGUAGE! accelerates students’ literacy achievement so that these problems disappear
faster!
What can you do at home?
• The following activities will help reinforce the content and skill development of LANGUAGE!
– Study spelling words in Unit Vocabulary– Use Unit Vocabulary words in sentences– Use idioms in conversation– Discuss the content of LANGUAGE! lessons– Oversee homework completion– Encourage students to read for one hour each day. (Use
books at the appropriate level) – Let your child see you read
Thank you for coming!
