HINDER US?By Giacomo B.

In “West Side Story” by Arthur Laurents theSharks come to America trying to find a

betterLife.

West Side Story

But the Jets stop them so that they find it difficult

to get the life that they’d like to have.

Fahrenheit 451

“Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury suggests us

that the freedom of thought (conscience) can help

us developing personal ideas, the first step to become different from others.

Fahrenheit 451

At the same time, the book carries the idea that

without all the information we have we would

be basically ignorant, and it’d be easier to control

the whole society.

Non-conformist music

Examples of what can further us “Build a ladder if there’s a wall, don’t be afraid

to slip and fall” Red Flay “There are miracles in life I must achieve, but

first I know it starts inside of me.” I Believe I Can Fly

Every change has to start inside you, starting

from your willingness to achieve what you want

in your life.

Non-conformist music

What instead can hinder us: “People try to put us down just because we get

around” My Generation “I want to be the minority; I don’t need your

authority.” Minority

Others, as said before try to stop us from doing what is less convenient

forthem.

Civil Disobedience

In this story Thoreau claims how individuals(citizens) and government should be strictly connected and help each other. Also this kind of relationship should be

importantto us and to our happiness.

Page 9: What dynamics in society further or hinder us

Civil Disobedience

Thoreau is rejecting the idea that anyone isrequired to sacrifice part of himself or what

hehas because of the government.

Book of Eli

The movie “The Book of Eli”

showed us that having something to

believe in can give us the strength to never

give up.

Page 11: What dynamics in society further or hinder us

…but at the same time

But at the same time there will always be someone who will try to go against you or

your thoughts.

Lord of the Flies

In the “Lord of the Flies” by William Goulding isrepresented the idea that fear could hinder us.

Ex. “There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!”

Lord of the Flies

And that an individual has to bedifferent from the others but on the other hand

everyone is part of a group, in fact we needpeople that are somehow related to us

to spend time with.

Teenage Wasteland

“We’ll see if we can show that school of yours a thing or two. Give it a month; then if you don’t like it, we’ll stop. If you don’t like it, we’ll stop. I mean, sometimes people just don’t get along, right?”

Not only our friends have to be somehow similarto us, but we also have to get along with them ifwe want to be happy.

“..but you and I both know there’s more to it than mere grades, don’t we? I care about the whole child-his happiness, his self-esteem.”

Teenage Wasteland

”…It was a put- up job! See, there is this guy that doesn’t like me. He put all these beers in my locker and started a rumor going..”

Sometimes people can be right in the middle ofour “life-trip”, but that doesn’t mean that theyshould be able to change the course of our life.

Beautiful Spencer

In “Beautiful Spencer” the main character ishindered by his mother who has impossible expectations for him. This expectations of

herbring him to be addicted to alcohol and

drugs.

Page 17: What dynamics in society further or hinder us

Beautiful Spencer

And even if his mom behaves like that, he finds

a way to be happier in his life: his girlfriendis all he has.

Native American Poetry

“You’ve carried it so long, I guess it becomes like a hidden deal inside of you, we try to bury the feelings we carry.”

This example can show us how people try to hide

the fears and how these Native Americans have

been treated for years.

Page 19: What dynamics in society further or hinder us

Native American Poetry

And even though Indians have been mistreated

for a long time, we can still find little native American communities which still have thesame habits of two hundreds years ago.
