It’s not a worship service. It’s not a business meeting. It’s not exactly a

party, although it will be fun! The purpose of the Family Gathering is to

communicate with and energize our congregation. As hard as we try to

keep everyone informed, we know it doesn’t always happen as well as it

might. By the same token, your Ministry Council and staff feel like there

are many positive and exciting things going on in the church – or are

about to get started. We want you to know about them!

Like what? Topics we want to address include what benefit we derived

from last year’s 100 Days of Prayer event and what steps are being

taken to address the items suggested to us by Dr. George Bullard in his

“fresh eyes” assessment last September. Your Ministry Council has con-

sidered some realignment of existing staff responsibilities to better

meet the needs of our congregation and the Northland community.

That’s just a sample of the information we want to share, but hopefully

you get the idea. Here’s what you need to know:

Everyone is invited – members, regular attendees and visitors! Nursery

care and Bible classes for children up through grade 5 will be offered as

usual. But classes for students in grade 6 on up, as well as all adult Bible

classes, will not meet so that you can attend the Family Gathering.

I hope that you will participate in the upcoming Family Gathering so that

you can be both informed and encouraged by what you hear. I believe

you will leave that meeting thanking and praising God as well as being

motivated to continue to serve Him in and through the life and ministry

of KRBC!

Our elementary age boys are in the process of making

their cars to race Friday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Come watch them race their homemade creations and

join in the excitement! After the race the boys will

have a sleepover in the youth room.

Ladies, get ready for the best retreat yet! Much prayer and plan-

ning have been part of preparing for the weekend of March 14 and

15. We have a great speaker with us again this year. Melissa Spoel-

stra, wife of pastor, Sean Spoelstra, was our speaker at the 2012

Christmas Brunch. Since that time, she has developed a nationwide

ministry which includes a Bible study series much like those of Beth

Moore. She will be coming to us from filming in Nashville the week

of the retreat.

The theme of the weekend is “Daring to Hope.”

We will focus on the study of Jeremiah the

prophet and leave with restored hope in the Lord.

The weekend will include all of the other experi-

ences that make each retreat memorable. Friday

night’s session will feature our own Flora Scono as

she shares the things that we need to be sure to

keep in place as we live each day. There will be

time for friendship and fellowship. As always,

there will be an abundance of food! Make plans to bring a car full

of friends for a time of learning, sharing and praying together. It

will be a highlight of 2014, and the cost is only $65 (Friday & Satur-

day) for plenty of food, comfy beds, if you choose to sleep, and a

renewed spirit.

“And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and

satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise

in the darkness, and your night will become like the noon-

day. The Lord will guide you always,; He will satisfy your

needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your

frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring

whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58: 10-11

dreaming of what it would be

to our community by developing

a garden project. Sanctuary

Columbus sponsored a Garden

Initiative Project two years ago,

and many of us participated in

delivering “socks” of soil and

seedlings to families around the

Northland community. It was an inspiring and exciting ex-

perience. Sadly, the project was not ongoing. As we

looked back on that experience, some of those who partici-

pated began to have a vision of what one church could do

to help families provide fresh fruits and vegetables for their

own household.

The Lord gave Karen and Marcia Kleinpaste a plan that we

are excited to begin working toward with those who are

interested and willing to reach out to our neighbors with

experience, expertise and friendship. There are five ways

to be involved in this ministry project: Garden Socks will

be prepared to enable those who want to garden in their

own yards. These socks will be filled with rich soil that in-

cludes compost from our own compost containers. Church

Garden Plots will be available for the use of those who

participate in planting seeds and nurturing them, along

with fellow gardeners, to be planted in our church court-

yard garden area. Home Gardens can be started this year

or continued through the Garden Project, as individuals

and families prepare plants with the group and take them

home to include in family gardens. Supporters, those who

choose not to maintain an individual garden, can still par-

ticipate by helping with the church garden area to plant

and nurture food to share with the community. Children

were the original reason for beginning a church garden as

part of the Summer Food Service Program. There will be

many ways that children can help with composting, making

raised beds, labeling plants, and helping with harvests.

If you love to get your hands in the soil and experience

God’s hands in providing food, please join the Garden Pro-

ject group on Sunday, February 16, following the service.

We will enjoy a light lunch while we plan the ways we will

work together in a summer of service and fellowship as we

grow a harvest of healthy food and hope.

I have heard that some folks are a little bit uncomfortable with

the label, “Tutor.” At KRBC, we call those who work with children

during After School Club through the fall and winter, “Homework

Helpers.” Truly, the two titles describe the same kind of person.

Are you wondering if that describes you? The answer is, “YES!” if

you have been a parent, a coach, a neighbor who played with kids

on your street, or a grandparent.

After School Club’s winter session has ended,

and the next session will begin in September.

These are some of the ways we helped third

through fifth graders with homework. We lis-

tened to children read a library book. We prac-

ticed math facts together. One night, the tasks

were helping to clean and organize a student’s backpack, prepar-

ing a display board for a science fair project, rewarding a student

for cleaning that backpack and finishing homework by giving him

paper to make a book, and praising each child for working so dili-

gently. Sound familiar? Most adults have had similar experi-

ences.

What does all of this have to do with you? Well, After School Club

will come again in the fall. You can always sign up to help. Tu-

tors/ Homework Helpers are greatly needed. Some tutors work

with two or three children to meet the needs of those who want

to participate. If you can’t wait until then, there is an opportunity

to help middle school and high school students with the very

same kinds of things on Monday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:00

p.m. We promise that no one has to work on high school math

unless that is what you enjoy! A team of volunteers work to-

gether to help students from several countries as they learn to

understand English texts, work online to complete homework

assignments, read to practice and understand vocabulary, and

develop writing skills.

What is the reward for this kind of commitment? There are too

many to mention, but here are a few: Becoming a friend to a

child who is overwhelmed by American schools and living in a

family who does not speak English; encouraging a student to set

goals and strive to become all he/she can be; responding to needs

that can be very evident but not addressed; and sharing your love

for Jesus with a young person and pointing the way to know Him

as Savior to one who never heard. These rewards are immeasur-

able. If you would like to join those who find great joy in becom-

ing part of introducing children and students to Jesus through

hands-on learning help, please contact Beth Ash through the
