INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE HAND TOOLS INDUSTRY:

Hand Tools Industry consists of organized, small scale and cottage sector. About 80 % of small

scale and cottage sector is located in and around Jalandhar in Punjab, Nagaur in Rajasthan and

Purulia in West Bengal. The Hand Tools Industries are playing a vital role in economic

development and earning valuable foreign exchange for the country.

What is a Hand Tool?A hand tool is a device or an instrument used to do a particular job that does not require a motor,

but is intended for hand held operation by one individual. Virtually every type of tool can be

considered a hand tool. It provides a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a physical task.

Now-a-days automotive hand tools are fast gaining popularity among woodworkers and

    craftsman.

    Examples of Hand Tools

Hand tools include anything from hammer to wrenches, to axes, pliers, screwdrivers, punches, shears, chisels, toolboxes etc these are further categorized as woodworking hand tools and

    craftsman hand tools.

Materials in Making Hand ToolsHand tools manufacturer make use of a wide variety of metals and wood in its making. The

common materials used in making the blades of hand tools are:

Iron Steel Aluminum Brass Stainless steel Carbon steel Mild steel

The material used in making the hand tool handle is the wood . Sometimes plastic handles are

    also used.

    History of Hand Tools Industry

The history of hand tools is as old as history of human civilization. Though an exact history ofhand tools is difficult to figure out, studies have shown that tools were used even at the early

stone age. There is evidence of humans using knives at the stone age. With the beginning of

civilization, sophisticated hand tools were developed and today with advanced technology, there

is a wide selection of hand tools in different shapes and sizes, to serve different purpose.

    Hand Tools and Animals

According to philosophers, hand tools were not only used by humans but also by other species

like monkeys, apes, several corvids, sea otters, and others. Later, proper observations revealed

that not only humans had the ability to make tools but also birds and monkeys. Later on

philosophers came to the conclusion that that we are the only species that uses tools to make

    other tools.

    Hand Tools and Human Civilization

Most research scholars believe that the use of hand tools was an important step in the evolution

of mankind. Hand tools tell us about the society that made them. The more developed a society,

the more tools it produces, and the more tools it uses. While discovering and inventing many

new things, humans had evolved an opposable thumb, which was useful in holding tools, and

increased dramatically in intelligence, which helped in the use of tools.

    Evolution of Hand Tools

The story of the evolution of hand tools was not one of continual development as there are

periods when progress was slow or even went backwards. The first sign of use of hand tools

came in the stone age. There is evidence of Romans making and using tools and some tools of

the Roman age are still used today. Machine tools occasioned a rise in producing new hand tools

in the industrial revolution of eighteenth century. During the Victorian period, a craftsman's hand

tools were his main source of earning. Specialist crafts and hand tools were developed period

after period to turn wood and metal into useful things. Carpenters, sawyers, carvers, joiners etc.

have all used the different types of hand tools in their operation. Every stage of the

manufacturing process had its special tool, from hammers, saws and axes to chisels and gouges.

Hand tools were by craftsmen in manual operations, like chopping, sawing, chiseling,

forging, filing since a long time. Some tools were found in northern Kenya in 1969 and

after research, it was found that they were about 2,600,000 years old.

    Features of Hand Tools:

The hand tools are available in varies shapes, sizes and designed for specific purposes. There are

hundreds of hand tools available in the market serving different purposes. From hammer to axe,

from knife to chisels, from saws to wrenches, there are different hand tools serving home repairs,

industries, construction and many other tasks.

While purchasing hand tools, certain features are to be considered. Not necessary that all the

features will be available in a single tool. All hand tools must provide means for accurately

controlling the depth of a cut or striking an object or punching or moving any hard to move items

etc. From a simple home repair task to a big task in an industry, hand tools are in great use and

hence certain ergonomic features should also be considered in the designs of hand tools.

Comparing hand tools with respect to various design characteristics helps to a great extent to

reduce physical stresses on the user.

They should always consider the following:

Do you want to go for traditional designs or opt for new tool designs? Evaluate the benefits of different designs. Choose the right-sized and shaped tool for the task.

    Designing comfortable Hand Tools

For proper designing of hand tools, it is very essential to know about the level of comfort and

discomfort in using hand tools. Research studies have shown that there are six comfort factors to

    consider. They are as follows:

Posture and muscles Functionality Pain of hand and fingers

Irritation of hand surface Handle characteristics Aesthetics

These six factors can further be classified into three main groups:

    Functionality Physical interaction and Appearance

Various features available in hand tools are:

    Adjustable All Purpose Automatic Basic

    Combination Disposable Cordless Curved

    Electric Flat Flexible Laminated

High Heat Insulated Heavy Duty Lead Free

    Left Hand Magnetic Portable Outdoor

    Ribbed Rigid Rotary Self Closing

    Sliding Tee Tubular Telescoping

    Twisted Waterproof Wet Cutting etc.

A hand tool which can be considered as a perfect or optimal include the following

    characteristics:

Available in multiple sizes Can be used with both hands simultaneously. Have low tension or spring loaded. Adjustable. Trigger activated by multiple fingers. Handle bent so wrist can be straight. Ambidextrous.

Hand Tools ClassificationOn the basis of the various mechanisms used, hand tools classification can be done which lead to

four different types of hand tools.

    Types of Hand Tools

Manual Hand Tools: Manual hand tools are the most basic form of equipment. They donot require the speed of powered hand tools or do not have access to power sources but

are perfect for operations. These include hoes, screwdrivers, chisels, wedges, drift pins,

hammers etc. Pneumatic Hand Tools: Pneumatic hand tools perform the operation task at the push of

a lever. They are powered by compressed air. They include chippers, drills, hammers,

    sanders etc.

Power Hand Tools: Tools which are hand held but are powered by electricity. Theseinclude chainsaws, high grade motors, electric drills, angle grinders, jigsaw cutters,

    tappers, fasteners etc.

Classification of Tools-Know all about different types of hand tools. On what criteria hand tools classification is done?

How one can differentiate among different hand tools on the basis of operating mechanism and

    their uses?

Cutting Tools: As the name suggests, these tools are used for cutting purposes. Cuttingtools are used not only to cut a physical object into pieces but also used to remove metal

or wood from the workpiece by means of sheer deformation. Hand tools are also used for

gripping objects by using leverage. For example: Pliers, Cutters, Snips

Gripping Tools: Many a times, it is required to remove metal or wood from theworkpiece or to hold a part to do further work or even pick up forcibily something like

nails etc. from within a piece of wood or metal. In such circumstances, gripping hand

tools are used for gripping objects by using leverage. For example: Pliers, Cutters, Snips

    etc.

Striking Tools: The striking tools are the most widely used tools and they are alsoconsidered to be the most often abused tool. Chiseling, punching and riveting can be doneproperly using striking tools. Hand-held striking tools have been used in a variety of

disciplines as leveraged devices providing a striking force to complete endless variety of

    tasks. For example: Hammers, Chisels

Driving Tools: Driving hand tools are those tools which are designed in a such a way sothat insertion, tightening, loosening, removing screws, bolts, nails or other pointed

objects or hard to turn items is done by applying torque. These tools have mechanical

advantage in applying torque. For example: Screwdrivers, Nut drivers, Hand wrenches,

    T-handle wrenches

Struck or Hammered Tools: Struck or hammered tools are tools used for forcing a bolt, pin, or rivet in or out of a hole. For example: Punches, Nail sets, Chisels
