What is a Short Film? A short film is a motion picture that has a duration of less than 40
minutes.
When short films were firstly created, the most popular genre was comedy.
They are considered as B type movies and were the second feature length film around the early 1920s as the movie industry was becoming increasingly popular.
After the 1930s, the short film industry began to boom. By the 60s, short films became a popular demand and also became a regular thing on television.
Who produces short films?
Amateur film makers will always try create short films to gain media attention.
Short films are able to take risks such as: black and white films, swearing, no dialogue and short films do not follow a Hollywood film structure. These are things that feature length films are not able to do freely
Short films are also produced by major institutions such as Pixar. Pixar is a great example as they showcase their newest technology to the audience in Pixar shorts. For example, ‘ The Blue Umbrella’ is a Pixar short that was shown during trailers before the film was show and this allowed the audience to have a glimpse of the new production and animation technology that Pixar were starting to create.
Many producers of short films tend to win awards at a variety of film festivals such as:
