Purpose Statement: This skit teaches children that selfish things, like money, fame and power, are not the most important things. Instead, helping and serving others is what is most important.

Materials/Props Needed: Nothing.

Note: This script uses Audio CD # 2.

• Lead the children through the opening activity “Selfish or Unselfish”

• Begin Worship Time

Teacher is on stage alone.

TeACher(CD Track # 1) Hello, everyone, and welcome back! If we’re going to be ready to continue our journey we need to warm up. Everybody up, it’s time to sing.

Teacher leads the children in singing or listening to the song.

TeACher(CD Track # 2) Whew, that was great! Today, on our quest, we’re talking about something very important. But first, I want all of you to imagine something for me. Imagine for a moment that one of your friends promised that he was going to give you $10 bucks. However, when the time came for them to give you the money, they chose to keep it instead. How would you feel?

Note: Have the children raise their hands to answer. You’ll receive several different answers, “I’d be mad, that would hurt my feelings that they lied, etc.”

TeACherOkay, now imagine that the same friend told you that he wanted to make a movie about you, but then decided to just make one about himself instead, saying that he wanted to be more famous than you. How would that make you feel?

Note: Have the children raise their hands to answer.

TeACherOkay, now imagine one more thing. Imagine that the same friend told you that he didn’t have time hang out with you anymore because he wanted to run for class president so he could boss everyone around. How would that make you feel?

Note: Have the children raise their hands to answer.

TeACherIt sounds like your friend is trying to be rich, famous, and powerful, and is only worried about himself. That wouldn’t be very nice and that’s not how friends are supposed to act. That’s being selfish and Jesus taught us that there are more important things than money, fame and power. Jesus taught us not to be selfish and that’s our main point! Jesus Teaches Me That I Should Not Be Selfish! Everybody up!

Teacher leads the children by first demonstrating the main point with motions, or have a child help decide motions. Then have the children repeat the main point two or three times.

TeACherGood job shouting the main point! Don’t forget it. Jesus teaches us to be the opposite of selfish. That means we should worry about others more than we worry about ourselves. We should try to serve and help each other. Even Jesus, the most important person ever, served the people around Him. Just check out our Bible verse:

Mark 10:45a “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others.” NLT

TeACherToday, Kit and Andi learn about what Jesus said about money, fame and power. Let’s see what they find out.

Note: Play Skit/Bible Story video followed by “monkey challenge.”

TeACherWow, I’m glad Andi was able to help Kit see what was truly important: Serving other people. There’s something else we can do that will help us not to be selfish: Worship God. We take the focus off of ourselves and put it on God. That’s what I want to do now. Let’s all stand and sing before we take up our offering.

Teacher leads children in singing the song.

TeACher(CD Track # 3) We’re going to continue to worship now with our offering.

Teacher takes up offering.

TeACher (CD Track # 1) Thank you all for worshipping with us. Now it’s time to for our small groups.

SMALL GROUPS

TeACherNow it’s time to put your knowledge to good use! It’s time to “Catch That Monkey!”
