As part of the SA Council for Business Women’s commitment to see women succeed, the role of uplifting and

recognizing women for their outstanding accomplishments in business, has been fulfilled by the council hosting

an annual “Business Woman of the Year” competition.

The competition is open to all South African women in business and we encourage women to stand up and be

proud of their triumphs and footprint left for others to follow.

Entries are done in the following categories:

For all women in business holding at least 50% ownership. This category includes any type of business / organization where the entrepreneurial skills of the individual are needed to ensure its success and growth. 3 Different categories will be launched this year:

Category 1 – Under R5mil Category 2 – R5mil - R15mil Category 3 – Above R15mil

For professional women who have their own practice/business or at least a 50% partnership in the practice/business.

This includes women in corporate business and non-governmental business (more than 200 employees). All women in this category need to have a budget and staff compliment that they are required to manage.

This includes women in government and para-statal business. All women in this category need to have a budget and staff compliment that they are required to manage.

For women in business more than 2 years, less than 3 years. This includes woman who owns or have a 50% partnership in a franchise. All women in this category need to have a budget and staff compliment that they are required to manage.

The Judges are looking for business women who have:

Delivered real business impact

Tackled business problems and obstacles with determination and creativity

Applied innovative thinking to push boundaries and do things differently

Used self-belief to rise above adversity and reach their goals

Consistently demonstrated exceptional and progressive leadership

Displayed sound financial management and acumen

Mentored and inspired others striving for success

Used their success to give back to their community

Judging Criteria:

Over and above the individual category criteria, entrants must:

Have been in business for a minimum of 3 years (2 years for Emerging Entrepreneur Category)

Comply with all legal requirements for running a business

Be a female

Judge’s undertaking:

Judges will take care to ensure that all judging processes will be fair, valid and unbiased

All judging will be done by people of suitable training and expertise

Judges all sign a confidentiality agreement wherein they undertake to keep all information received in the

strictest of confidence

Judging Process:

Step 1: Initial entry assessment The first round of judging is based on the candidate’s entry submission to [email protected] before/on 19 April 2017.

With the entry, the ladies are required to supply the judges with documents like:

o Financial statements, tax clearance, testimonials, legal documents etc.

o Also, a lengthy questionnaire about themselves and their management skills.

We want to give the judges a good overview of the entrant. Although we do look at financials and business

health, we are focused on the business woman and what she has achieved in her business and in her

community. In line with the SACBW’s slogan, our aim is to unlock potential and valuable feedback is given

during and after the interviews.

R350 entry fee is required before entering and is not refundable on cancellation of entry.

Step 2: Short-listed entrants Once all entries have been evaluated, the judges will short-list the most outstanding candidates in each of the Award Categories. Entries going through to Regionals will be announced by 1 May 2016.

Step 3: Regional interviews Regional interviews will be conducted between 10 - 12 May 2017. Three judges will conduct 30 min interviews via Skype from the local SACBW branch venue.

Regional interviews are conducted. Three judges conduct the judging. Regional finalists are announced on

the 16th of May 2017 via email and announced via social media and our National Summit on the 7th June

2017.

Regional Finalists are also required to use social media for marketing purposes and it will form part of the

final judging process.

Regional Finalists (NPO’s excluded) are required to do a fundraising project of which 20% will be donated to

iDuc.

iDUC is a Non-Profit Organisation that was initiated by Mrs Santi Britz who was raped in her own home 7 years ago. iDUC’s mission is to create awareness to stop the violence against women and children and to give support to victims. They believe that abuse can be stopped by engaging with boys and men in the prevention of gender based violence.

iDuc has now partnered with Varsity Cup and the 13 universities involved to coordinate the Miss Varsity Cup initiative and help with fundraising. iDuc is also the charity that Varsity Cup supports.

Step 4: National Judging Interview Regional Winners must travel to Gauteng (at own cost) for a 45-min interview with the National Judging Panel on 14 - 15 September 2017.

They will be required to do a short presentation on their business and the fundraising they did.

Regional winners will attend a workshop in this period.

National category winners of the” SACBW Business Woman of the Year” competition will be announced at

the prestigious SACBW Awards Evening on the 16th September 2017 in Gauteng (Pretoria). Each regional

winner will be responsible to sell a table of 10 people (including herself).

The National Winners will also be invited to attend the AHI National Conference and Gala Dinner in 1 – 2 November 2017.

Terms & Conditions:

Entrants must be members of the SA Council for Business Women

R350 entry fee is required before entering and is not refundable on cancellation of entry.

National Winners will be required to remain a member for at least 2 years after winning the award and be

actively involved in their respective branches.

Previous finalists may enter again.

Only fully completed entry forms will be considered. Forms to be completed in black ink and must be neat

and legible.

Terms & Conditions Continues:

The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be allowed.

The regional winners will be announced at local events and winners must be available to attend these

events.

Regional winners (NPO’s excluded) will be required to raise R5 000 in the 3 months after the regional

judging/end August 2017. These funds can be raise by events, sponsorships or projects. 20% of the funds

will be donated to our iDuc project.

National finalists will be required to do a presentation about their business for the judging process.

The national winners will be announced at the SACBW National Gala Dinner and winners must be available

to attend the SACBW Awards Evening.
