What OLPC is good for &

Not good for?

• Explicit Educational purposes in mind?

• These are the capabilities that enabled the exponential growth of knowledge in the world, and children, given opportunity, freedom, and guidance, are the most capable to take advantage of these capabilities for growth and development

WHAT OLPC IS GOOD FOR?

• Collaboration

• Design,

• Modeling,

• Visualization,

• Reflection,

• Debugging (To remove a hidden electronic device, such as a microphone, from: debug a conference room.)

HOW? 1/2

• Access to connected laptops.

• School practice will be enhanced through electronic access to materials.

• Content can be updated constantly at lower cost.

• The ability for teachers to select appropriate materials for local needs.

HOW? 2/2

• Day to day developments.

• The laptops enable support for ongoing teacher professional development.

• peer-to-peer support.

• Development of communities of learners and teachers, and local content creation and sharing.

How children learn?

• Meaningful Learning should include:

• 1. Cognitive development2. Social and emotional development3. Education and language development4. Independence and responsibility

• {Play is an interaction between the self and the environment}

Piaget (1972) play:

1. play can serve many purposes and since children learn more effectively

through activity rather than instruction, play provides an excellent

vehicle for learning.

Piaget (1972) play:

2. cognitive development takes place as a result of the interaction between the child and the environment.

OLPC& Imagination Vygotsky. -Erikson

• Play is characterised by ‘imaginary qualities’

• (Vygotsky. 1966):• ). Play can be intense and serious; it can be

creative and spontaneous. It seems that it is the attitude of the child which is important in establishing whether an activity is play

Erikson:

• learns to cope with the environment

teacher or NO teacher?

• Nicholas Negroponte(a professor of MIT’s media lab-2005) who is the founder of OLPC’ in fact Dr. Seymour Papert(student of Piaget) had this idea for children to use computer – he ,Negroponte once said that he hopes that the OLPC can work for children as a teacher!

• DO YOU AGREE?

Teacher or No Teacher

• Lego Mindstorms gets its name from a book by Seymour Papert calledMindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas.

•  Papert, a student of developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, has much to criticize about the way mathematics are taught to children.  Although he was writing in the late 70s, the situation is not much better today, even though we have much better tools available to us for teaching math

Identity crisis& OLPC!
