A-level SociologyStudents report that they particularly enjoy the topic of identity and how the ideas of femininity and masculinity have changed. Should we return to the traditional roles of the past? Has Femini-sation of the work place led to a break down of family life, crime and deviance in society and the crisis of masculinity? Is this why boys are underachieving at school? Students are encouraged to watch extracts of films to illustrate sociological themes such as ‘Fight Club’ which raises issues of identity and the crisis of masculinity, and the topic of crime is investigated throughout AS and A-Level. Students enjoy researching subcultures and particularly appreciate the opportunity to observe and interview Goths when we go to Whitby Goth festival. The subject is a living one and skilful use of contemporary events allows the students to see just how relevant their studies are to the world around them. For example, applying sociological ideas and explanations to the Summer riots in 2011. Staff are regularly available to support students outside of their classroom learning and are encouraged to take an opportunity to reflect on learning in a com-fortable environment in the Bean Bag room, a unique facility to en¬hance student experience and learning.

BTEC Travel and Tourism - Level 2 & 3When studying Travel and Tourism, you get to meet many other people who are interested in the same area of work and members of staff who have worked in the industry. As part of the course you re-enact aspects of the industry and not only learn where different countries are and what they have to offer; but you also take part in visits and residential visits to many places in the UK and Europe. We offer trips to Blackpool, York, Leeds, Scarborough, North Yorkshire Moors and over the years the residential unit has taken us to places including London, Dublin and Barcelona. So, if you are interested in travelling or working in the industry, this is the best course for you!
