Sauna Hygiene - Creating A Healthy Environment For

Customers

IntroductionSaunas are a healthy way to relieve stress, increase

circulation and remove toxins from the skin.

They were used since ancient times in Scandinavian and Baltic countries for health, comfort and cleanliness.

Though the high temperature in the room is generally not a conducive environment for the growth of pathogens, basic cleaning procedures are necessary to ensure the health and comfort of all patrons.

Hygiene ProblemsGenerally, these areas remain free of

bacteria and pathogens because of the high heat conditions in the room.

The use of wood benches discourages the growth of bacteria, as well.

Hygiene ProblemsHowever, some areas of the room, such as

the floors, can see bacterial growth of dermaphytic pathogens that can cause athlete’s foot.

In addition, touch-specific areas such as door handles and other areas need routine cleaning to ensure that illnesses cannot be spread through contact. Flooring should be easy to clean with few crevices that can harbor pathogens.

Cleaning AreasFloor area should be vacuumed regularly to

remove dirt, dust, hair and other debris. Mop floors with an antibacterial detergent to remove bacteria and fungus that can cause skin problems.

Use a mild detergent solution to clean walls and benches. Thoroughly clean knobs, handles and other areas that are touched frequently with the hands. Rinse soap from surfaces. Dry off wood benches to prevent damage to the materials.

Cleaning The HeaterThe sauna heater can become water-

spotted and clogged with debris.

Clean metal surfaces with a non-abrasive cleaning agent and remove dust with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Heated RocksDo not neglect the sauna rocks. Allow them

to cool, and wash them carefully in a detergent and water solution, using a sponge or cloth to scrub the surfaces.

Allow the rocks to dry completely before returning them to use.

Water BucketsThe water buckets kept for ladling water on

the stones should be cleaned regularly. Do not allow water to sit in the buckets for more than 24 hours.

Bacteria can begin to grow in the container. Empty water from the buckets and wash with a detergent solution.

Rinse the buckets thoroughly and refill with water.

Encouraging Hygiene EtiquetteYou can educate patrons in proper room

etiquette to ensure that everyone’s comfort and hygiene is a paramount consideration for your establishment.

Patrons should understand they should shower first to ensure a hygienic environment for all.

Encouraging Hygiene EtiquetteThe area is a place where people are

expected to be naked; so a few considerations are necessary, such as keeping your gaze and your hands to yourself to prevent embarrassment in others.

People should be encouraged to bring a towel to sit on to prevent any bacteria from being transferred to another person. Remind patrons that quiet and contemplation is the proper spirit for enjoyment of the sauna area.

Protecting Your CustomersYou can use social media and other new

technology to inform your customers about the measures taken to protect their health while using the saunas.

This measure can be a good way to market your services and bring new customers to your establishment.
