Welcome to Northland on Sunday Nights!

Our aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in

worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways:• Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights)

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES:

AUGUST 29 — Rapha House UpdateDid you catch the Rapha House video at the services August 7 to 9 (www.northlandchurch.net/media/students_supporting_rapha_house/)? If so, you might remember Pastor Joel referencing an amazing project that some students at Northland are undertaking. Rapha House “exists to extend unconditional love to girls who have been rescued out of slavery and sexual exploitation” (www.raphahouse.org). Stay after service to see the short video on this project and hear from these students on

Mothers, Brothers and Sisters

Are you feeling “dissed”? Discouraged, disconnected, discontent? Maybe it’s high time for some family time! We have awesome family opportunities at Northland at

Mount Dora: a Sunday morning youth Bible study, a Tuesday morning men’s group, Wednesday evening prayer gatherings, and a whole host of other opportunities to be with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Who knows, you may find someone who could become a spiritual mentor, accountability partner or protégé to you!

Jesus placed an extremely high value on community. In Mark chapter 3, Jesus was teaching in a house, and He was told that Mary and His siblings were outside, waiting to criticize and correct Him for His audacious ministry. In response to this information, Jesus said, “Who are my mother and my brothers? … Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:33-35, NIV). It’s among the community of believers where you will find the encouragement and the connection and the contentedness you seek. It’s among your church family at Northland at Mount Dora.

Why not step out and join us for something? Some opportunities to connect, grow and serve are listed below, and provided are some photos of our awesome church family. I look forward to seeing you there!

Earlier this year a group of high school girls at Northland were made aware of this global problem and they decided to take action by supporting Rapha House.

More than two million children are exploited in the sex trade industry worldwide according to UNICEF.

Rapha House is a Christian safe house that helps these victims heal and introduces them to their Creator and Redeemer.

Love in Action

Northland at Oviedo has been moving each week toward a community-wide movement of love, seven days a week. We have been creating opportunities for the body of

Christ to engage in the love of God and one another through the study of His Word, in gatherings all across town, and by serving one another on Sundays.

First John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” (NIV). There is a movement to the emotion of love; it is not stationary or stagnant. Love is both a noun and a verb. We cannot be called

disciples of Christ and not be soldiers of love. He declares, this is how the world will know we are His.

How do you love for His glory? How do we love for His glory? Who do we love for His glory?

The answers are simple, but not easy. We are to love everyone for His glory — our family members, neighbors, coworkers, and even our enemies, those who don’t love us back and the unlovable! Remember the Sermon on the Mount? If not, read it again; it’s in Matthew chapters 5, 6, 7 and the beginning of chapter 8. Jesus is clear: We are to be in this world to bring glory to the Father by loving in a radical way!

Well, before that all becomes too much to handle, maybe we ought to start small and easy. If it is essential that to truly love someone, we must know the person, and to truly know someone, we must spend time with the person, then it seems like the first step to loving others, and, in turn, to truly loving God, is to spend some time getting to know one another and Him better.

I have an idea: Get into a Secret Church gathering this fall. Sign up for Sunday Serve. It is that simple!

Partnering With Christians in China

BY DR. DAN LACICHPastor

Connecting with other parts of the church around the world in order to partner together in spreading the Gospel is a high value at Northland. Recently, God has

opened some incredible doors for us to partner with a church in Beijing and do groundbreaking ministry together.

Haidian Christian Church has a main congregation just two blocks from Beijing University. On any given Sunday, more than 6,000 people attend one of four services, three in Chinese and one in English. Additionally, there are more than 40 other locations, or “meeting points,” around Beijing in which members of the church gather for worship. These meeting points are taught by a rotating team of 15 pastors under the leadership of Senior Pastor Peter Wu.

Last March Pastor Wu and his wife visited Northland and learned how we connect our sites and about our webstream worship, what he called “online church.” He immediately saw the application of this for his own congregations and the possibility of webstreaming an evangelical Mandarin language service to

the world someday. At his invitation, three Northland staff members, Chris Gerrish from our Tech Department; Dr. Margi McCombs, our executive director of Equipping; and I went to Beijing in order to strengthen our partnership and help them move forward.

Chris worked very closely with the tech team at Haidian in order to begin the process of connecting several of their meeting points in a similar way to how we connect with groups through our online worship. I worked with their pastors and staff to cast vision and equip them for the possibilities of an online ministry. One immediate benefit is that they can more easily communicate with larger parts of their church. The places that do not have a pastor on site can participate in the service and preaching from the main location.

In meeting with the staff and talking about ministry, it was fascinating to learn that they have very little in the way of church programs for serving in the community. That is not something that fits their culture. Yet, as a church, they see the value of ministries of mercy to those in need. So instead of serving days and large events, they are equipping individuals to live out lives of serving the people around them. People in the church are urged to be “the good Samaritan” in whatever situation in which God places them.

After getting all the technical aspects taken care of at the church, Chris Gerrish was rewarded with a trip to the Great Wall of China.

Do you want to change the world, but don’t have a passport? Are you looking to make an impact in an area, but don’t have the means to travel? Why not start in

your own community? While I would encourage everyone to go on a Distributed Journey abroad at some point in his or her life, there is certainly no shortage of opportunities to serve others right here, right now, during one of our Local Serve Days.

This year alone, Northlanders have packed more than 140,000 meals with Kids Against Hunger, sent more than 1,000 kids to school with a new backpack, assembled 800 hygiene kits for the homeless, landscaped property at schools and local nonprofit organizations, donated more than 21,000 pounds of clothing, and fed the homeless, just to name a few things! All of this was accomplished right here in our own community. No passports were required!

While schedules are busy and time is short, the great news about serving locally is that it can take as little as four hours a month if you choose. So why not commit to serving one Saturday morning a month, or maybe one evening a week? If you want to change the world, why not start with the people in your own community? There are endless opportunities to serve those in need right here, right now. So sign up for a Local Serve Day, feed a family at the Ronald McDonald House, or care for the homeless downtown on a Wednesday night. Show someone else God’s love in a very tangible way – by serving that person!

Our next Local Serve Day is September 18. We will meet at 8 a.m. in front of The Rink for check-in and a short time to socialize and fuel up on coffee and snacks, and for a few announcements. To find out more about service opportunities and to register, visit www.northlandchurch.net/ministries/local_serving/.

AbrAhAm PleAds with GodGenesis 18:22-33Abraham’s nephew, Lot, lived in the wicked town of Sodom. God was planning to sweep Sodom away. Abraham didn’t want Lot or others who did good to be punished with the wicked, so he pleaded for Sodom. He asked God, “You would never kill godly people along with those who are evil, would you? You wouldn’t treat godly and evil people alike. You would never do anything like that! Won’t the Judge of the whole earth do what is right?” God answered, “if i find 50 godly people in the city of Sodom, i will save it. i will spare the whole place because of them.” then Abraham asked what would happen if only 45, 40, 30, 20 or 10 good people could be found. God said He would spare the city for ten good people.

Dr. McCombs spent time with the Children’s Ministry team, training them in the use of Northland curriculum for children. They are now using it during their English language service and have plans to eventually translate it into Mandarin to use during the other four services. Already it is having a profound impact on their ministry. As one of their teachers said in a recent e-mail: “After receiving the teaching materials from you, we’ve started a pilot teaching, and this Sunday will be the third week for us to do it. After two weeks’ practice, we saw kids and their parents love it very much. In the meantime, through class preparation, we, as teachers, also learned a lot. Thank you.”

China(Continued from page 5.)

On any given Sunday more than 6,000 people attend one of four services, three in Chinese and one in English.

Preaching the message this weekend:Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior PastorDr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.”

Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance.

SCRIPTuRe FOCuS: Genesis 18:22-33 (NASB)Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the LORD. Abraham came near and said, “Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?” So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account.” And Abraham replied, “Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes. Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five?” And He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” He spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose forty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it on account of the forty.” Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” And he said, “Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the twenty.” Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.” As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham the LORD departed, and Abraham returned to his place.

WORSHIP FOCuS: Worship God today for His wisdom. In His wisdom, He allows us to grapple with who He is and what He does. He is not threatened by our arguments, our fears or our doubts. As a result, our questioning brings us closer to Him. When we demonstrate that same wisdom, being willing to listen to and love the arguers in our lives, we are often able to grow in His wisdom.

SuMMARy PRAyeR: Dear Father, we marvel at the depth of Your riches and wisdom and knowledge! How unsearchable are Your judgments and Your ways beyond finding out! For who, like You, has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Send us Your Spirit to lead us in the way of knowledge. Guide us in the path of understanding. Help us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Teach us to measure our words, as we endeavor to love one another as You have loved us. Amen.
