News From Tasmania

Year 8 is having a great time in Tasmania. After a fairly rough trip on the ferry the weather has set-tled to being sunny and pleasant. The tour guides have been excellent, espe-cially on the Ghost Tour. On the phone today they had just left the Cadbury Chocolate Factory and were heading off to Hobart before heading to Devon-port for the trip home.

For so much what shall we repay?

Continued from Page 1

Friday November 25th Tomorrow is White Ribbon day. The white ribbon campaign is the first male led campaign to end violence against women in the world. It encourages men to take a stand and say that violence, in any form, is never accept-able. Wearing a white ribbon represented the men’s public pledge never to commit, ex-cuse or remain silent about violence against women. In Australia, one in three women will be assaulted or abused in her lifetime. These women are our mothers, our girl-friends, our sisters and our friends. There are many kinds of and names for vio-lence against women: domestic violence, family violence, wife battering, intimate vio-lence, sexual violence, sexual assault, rape, marital rape, gang rape, date rape, inde-cent assault, sexual harassment, enforced prostitution, enforced abortion, enforced motherhood.

Regardless of what it is called Australia says no to any form of violence against women.

Careers with Beth Schiller VET Induction Day On Tuesday of this week, all senior students undertaking a VET sub-ject were given an induction by our regional consultant from Albury, Ms Annette Gorham who reminded students of their commitments in regard to VET. We remind parents that VET subjects require students to undertake 70 hours of structured work placement in a related industry. The school has made provision for this to take place from 5-9th March 2012, with some placements occurring the weeks prior to and after this date. Please mark this on your family calendars now. Hay War Memorial High School Students Nominated for Australian Vocational Prize OTEN students Tamara Wade and Jessie White have been nominated for consideration in the Vocational Students Prize Competition. This recognizes their dedication and compe-tence in studying towards Children’s Services Cert III. The girls completed their course competencies via OTEN , which is the distance education section of TAFE. Their teacher in Sydney and the staff at HWMHS observed their diligence and the speed by which they completed the course early. Jessie is continuing her studies now she has left Year 12 and Tamara has some casual employment at the child care centre. Well done girls and good luck in the competition.

Mobile Phones There has been a gradual outbreak of anti social behavior with mobile phones. School is a place to socialise in the old fashioned way with your friends. Please use your play-ground time to talk to each other. The mobile phone can be used to keep in contact outside of school hours. It is school policy for mobile phones to be out of sight in your bag and switched off. A teacher will ask you to comply if they see you using your phone. Please put it away when asked so that it does not need to be confiscated.

The school policy for the safety of us all is first offence in a term the phone is confiscated for the day. Second offence your parent is required to collect your phone from the school. Year 8 Students have been issued with learning journals. Students are expected to bring and use their learning journal to help them and you (parents and carers) to track their work. Please encourage and support this valued initiative.

Madeline Schiller becomes a School Based Trainee with the Commonwealth Bank. HWMHS has another school based trainee. Madeline Schiller will work one day per week for the Common-wealth Bank as a trainee and will study Business Ser-vices Cert II to complement her vocational training. At other times Madeline will be at school, completing her other HSC subjects. This trend is becoming increasingly popular pathway across the state and we wish Made-line and all our other trainees every success in their em-ployment and training. HWMHS would also like to thank the Commonwealth Bank and GSET of Wagga for supporting the traineeship. Matt Ward starts his new career with the RTA We congratulate Matt Ward on his recent success in gaining an apprenticeship with the RTA. Matt will begin his apprenticeship as a Bridge Carpenter in January and at the moment is working casually with his employer. Another career success story for HWMHS!

Dear Parents & Students,

South West Music Regional Conservatorium currently provides music tuition for

voice, guitar , drum kit, piano, keyboard, ukulele, mandolin, flute, brass and early

childhood music. We are also teaching violin and cello by video conferencing. Our

programs are open to both adults and students.

We are working towards increasing the variety of instruments taught and attracting

more instrumental teachers to the South West Region. In order to achieve our

goals, we need your assistance by completing the attached Expression of

Interest form.

This information will be used to attract teachers and increase our video

conferencing programs. It will enable us to confidently say that our market research

indicates that a significant number of children / adults are keen to learn a particular

instrument.

We believe that there is a huge demand out there in our community for improved

music education and we will endeavour to satisfy that demand.

Your anticipated cooperation and support is much appreciated.

Please return your completed form to the school or you may post it to the above

address.

Regards,

Cheryl Fuller
