Mission StatementThe Mission of the Bloomingdale Park District is to efficiently and economically provide recreation programs, facilities and open spaces

designed to provide enjoyable leisure time experiences that benefit the community.

Once again, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming and the sounds of birds singing are being drowned out by the roar of lawn mowers. It’s summer as I write this. Time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

Before it’s time to think about going back to school, maybe a vacation is being planned. If not a vacation, maybe a staycation. That’s where we can help. Right in your neighborhood, a wealth of opportunities exist to occupy your time for an afternoon, a day or even a whole season. Apart from the obvious baseball and soccer fields, open space abounds to just relax, soak up some sunshine (with proper skin protection, of course), read a book or picnic. If fishing is your thing, we have several fishing piers strategically placed. Along with playgrounds for every age, fitness and bike trails are conveniently located throughout town so you can leave the car in the garage. Tired of re-runs on TV? Come listen to a concert at Old Town Park, the complete lineup can be found online at www.bloomingdaleparks.org.

While you are in the parks, please take note of the myriad improvements that have happened with more to come. A new playground in Seasons Four Park was dedicated this past spring. New tennis/pickleball courts in Indian Lakes Park are seeing their first full season of use. Gardening fans should check out the efforts of the Bloomingdale Garden Club projects located in Old Town Park and Springfield Park. If you like what you see, they are always looking for volunteers.

As I write this, negotiations are under way in Springfield regarding our state’s budget. The inability to come to an agreement has led to some unfortunate news for your Bloomingdale Park District. One of the casualties of this is the Governor’s decision to suspend Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grants. These grants, when awarded, usually cover 50% of a project’s cost. The other half is paid by the Park District. It allows us to make virtually double the improvements for which we could normally budget. On the bright side, through careful budgeting by our staff, a number of improvements will still be visible throughout our system. Look for replacement playgrounds soon at Tompkins Park and Circle Park, as well as much needed drainage and field improvements at Springfield Park in 2016.

Please have a safe and enjoyable fall season, affordably close to home!

P.S. Your comments are always welcome by phone (630-529-3650), email [email protected] or in person if you see me in the parks.

Sincerely yours,

ConvenienceThe Bloomingdale Park District works when you play. It’s a simple motto that rings true throughout our programming and planning processes. Integral to that is making the District convenient to its residents.

In our most needs assessment survey, the District discovered that convenience outweighs price and many other key factors in participation for our residents. Convenience comes in the form of day, date, time, location, participation with a friend (for carpooling), etc.

Below are multiple ways that we’re trying to make the Park District more convenient.

• You may have noticed the partner program symbol in previous seasonal brochures. It means that two programs were specifically timed to coincide with each other for your convenience.

• This past summer, The Oasis Water Park never closed an amenity, regardless of low attendance usually due to poor weather. That was aimed at our pool patrons who may have planned a specific day to visit which unfortunately turned out poor weather-wise. As a result, the day was not all it could have been due to amenities closing.

• Nearly all of the Park District’s adult fitness classes feature a drop-in option. We make this option available for our residents who may not be able to commit to a full six- or eight-week class.

• Similar to drop-ins are our various punch card programs offered for open gym, summer camp and The Oasis Water Park. The punch cards provide added convenience for residents who can’t commit to a program or class long term.

• Many of the flyers you see in the Johnston Recreation Center or around town feature a registration form on the back for your convenience.

• A great feature of our summer camps is how there’s no such thing as a “conflict” with another Park District program. Does your child have gymnastics lessons in the morning? No problem, one of our camp counselors escorts the child to gymnastics and picks them up later to bring them back to camp.

• A tremendous feature of our before and after school program for kindergarteners (Kindergarten Kids’ Place) is the fact that School Districts 13 and 15 bus the participants to and from the Park District. The before and after school program for older children (first through fifth grade, Kids’ Place) is held on site at the schools. The bottom line: we’re working with the school district to make everything easier and more convenient for our participants.

For more information on the Park District’s fun, affordability, convenience, trendiness and/or safety, visit www.bloomingdaleparks.org/About-BPD/Facts.htm.

Chicago Sculpture International: “Landfills”August 22 - September 26Complimentary Reception: August 30, 2-4 pm

“Landfills” promises to be a journey into the world of sculpture that is driven by collective consciousness and a never-ending source of individual inspiration. The exhibit means to present works whose materials have literally and physically metamorphosed from their original, fragmented street; meaning to become an object within a gallery context. Whether interpreted as landscape or lifestyle, beautiful or ugly, industrial or craft-made, intentionally designed or unearthed, the allegory of ideas and sculptures speaks about a culture of social disruption.

Yesterday, Today and TomorrowJuried Multi-Media Show October 10 - November 7Complimentary Reception: October 25, 2-4PM
