TODAY’S PROGRAM…Member Recognition-Hixson Awards Bob Carr emceed our first of two Hixon Awards ceremonies, honoring members old and new. The George F. Hixon Fellowship was established by Kiwanis International in 1983
to recognize its first President and is now awarded to those members who show extraordinary dedication to the Club and it’s mission throughout a single year. A donation of $1,000 to KI International al-lows for the designation of a Fellowship and many choose to make a donation honoring others. Today we did just that, honoring four mem-bers whose outstanding commitment to our Club and to the communi-ty as a whole sets an example for us all. First to be inducted was Dan Burroughs. Claire Dahl introduced Dan, giving us a summary of his many gifts to the community, including 35 years as a middle and high school teacher here in Ann Arbor. In addi-tion to volunteering at the sale, Dan serves as the co-
chair of Children & Youth Services Grant Coordi-nation Committee, he’s on the Scholarship, Mem-bership Growth & Education, PR & Marketing, At-tendance and Reception Committees, and works with Meals on Wheels. He’s also served on many other committees and on the board of directors during his 16 years of membership. Dan has 3 daughters and lives with his wife Adrienne in Ann Arbor. Bob Gray took the podium next to Induct Mari-anne D’Angelo. Marianne began volunteering with our Club in 2015, becoming a member in April 2016. Since then, she’s been an active member
whose service includes creating the Flippin’ for Kiwanis project and, to quote Bob, ““Marianne is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on SMOC. She averages 10-12 hours a week at the KC and works virtu-ally every sale. Her baked goods are admired and consumed by volunteers every Friday and Saturday morning. She has organized breakfasts and lunches for volunteers, provided input to the annual Kiwanis summer picnic with door prizes, games and carriage rides. She was identified early on as the “whirling dervish” at the KC and h energy and smile are infec-tious. Marianne’s exceptional dedication to the club and its mission and her extraordinary involvement more than qualify her as a George F. Hixson Fellow.” Marianne has 1 daughter and lives in Dexter where she operates her clinical psychology practice, assisting with addiction recovery and continued sobriety of her patients.

GUESTS AT OUR CLUB… We were happy to have the following guests with us today; Marilyn Drake (Dave Drake), Andrew Tay, Safia Ziani, Brad Chase, Bernie Doyle and Jackie O’Bri-en (Mary Stewart), Adrienne Burroughs (Dan Burroughs), Mamadou (Harry Hawkins) new employees Susan Mumm and Sonia Peterson, and our Circle K friends, Skylar Gleason and Melissa Zhou. Thanks for being with us today!
HOSPITALITY…
We were concerned to hear that Alan Burg had a heart scare while in Rome but Ken Hil-lenburg reports that Alan is up and walking around the city, just taking it a bit slow-er. Honorary club member James W. Anderson Jr. passed away on Saturday and arrange-ment as are still pending at this time. Larry French had successful; carpel tunnel surgery and, on a happier note, Max Zeigler’s wife Carol is out of the hospital and getting bet-ter every day. Prayers for healing and comfort to all!
ANNOUNCEMENTS… Greg Meisner introduced our new bookkeeper, Susan Mumm. Susan just started this week so you'll be seeing more of her in the future. Welcome to the Team, Susan! Kathy Barden Perlberg reminded us of the upcoming Outreach program on December 12 when the Ann Arbor Ypsi-lanti Chamber of Commerce leadership class of about 50 will meet in our lunch room and learn more about Kiwanis. Deb Jones will be making a presentation on our Club. Reminder, applications are being accepted for Lt. Governor Elect. Contact Jacqueline Otto, current Lt. Governor, with any questions at [email protected] or 734-368-2251. Don’t forget that Kiwanis - Salvation Army Bell Ringing is Saturday, December 22. If you aren’t able to sign up for a shift,
you can still help by stopping by one of the designated locations to spend a minute with your fellow Kiwanians to show your support.
NEW MEMBER…
Mike Dabbs introduced and inducted new member John Kinzinger (sponsor Peter Schork) into the Cub today. John is a well know and honored volunteer in the community and is the founder and coordinator of the Warriors and Caregivers United, assisting local veterans. He and his wife Jane live in Ann Arbor and have one son and one grandson. Coincidentally, John’s son was the recipient of a Cross Foundation Scholarship 10 years ago. Be sure to say hit and introduce yourself. Wel-come to the Club, John, we’re so happy to have you here!

FINES…
We had the customary fine today to celebrate our new member, John Kinzinger. In ad-dition, Nick Dever proposed a fine on anyone who has never been to Vietnam, having it pass unanimously. Peter Schork went on to propose a fine on anyone who did not in-duct a member today, basically fining everyone but himself and Mike Dabbs. This passed but Nick Dever added an addendum that included both Mike and Peter too. Better luck next time, Peter.
HAPPY DOLLARS…
There was no time for happy dollars but $10 was donated anonymously. Thanks!
INTERCLUB REPORT...
Martha Petroski gave us an update on the upcoming Special Interclub meeting with Ypsilanti on Wednesday, the 19th. The meeting begins at noon at the new Student Services Center at Eastern. Martha has reserved 10 spots for our club members and reports the cost of the meal is $9 for a full lunch /$7 for just soup/salad. She attended the Whitmore Lake meeting this past Thursday and again lauded the wonderful potluck served, encouraging us to check it out some time. She reminds us that we’ll be hosting a Super Interclub in February 2019 so please mark your calendar (and be sure to follow the rules)
TODAY’S PROGRAM CONTINUED… Next up for recognition was Mary Stewart, who was inducted by Ellen Webb. Mary be-came a member in 2017 and quickly became an indispensable member of the team. Her activities at Kiwanis cover everything from sorting, pricing, stocking, orienting (and herding at times) the thrift sale volunteers and beyond. She serves on the Social, Per-
sonnel, SMOK, Scholarship and Warm the Children Committees. For those unaware, Mary’s father, Mack Stewart, founded Warm the Children in CT in 1988. In addition to serving on our board of directors, Mary is on the boards of the Women’s Center and the Community Action Network. Mary has 2 daughters, 1 son and lives in Ann Arbor with her husband Andrew. Last, but certainly not least, Pat Buhrer pre-sented Dave Drake with his Hixon Fellowship. Dave has been a Kiwanian for 50 years, joining in 1968. Dave help start the Shore-wood Kiwanis Club and was a member of the
Southfield Club, were he serviced as president twice. He’s been an active member of our club since joining, working with Meals on Wheels, serving Thanksgiving Day meals, ring-ing the bell for the Salvation Army and helping with Warm the Children. He’s also worked in recruiting new members. Dave and his wife Marilyn have 2 sons, 1 daughter and 8 grand-children. We thank all of our new Hixon Fellows for their dedication to Kiwanis and it’s mission of serv-ing the children in our community. It’s an honor to work with you all and we treasure you as fellow members and friends. Don’t miss the noon meeting on March 25, 2019 where we’ll honor 4 more members with well deserved Hix-on Fellowships.
