UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO SCIENCE TALK: BREAKING BAD PROTEINS IN DISEASES OF THE BRAINJohn M. Harper Branch Tuesday, September 107:00pm to 9:00pmRegistration opens September 3
Many neurodegenerative diseases share a common theme in which a build-up of toxic proteins in the neurons of the brain leads to cell death and diminished brain function. Consequently, researchers aim to decrease these toxic proteins by either stopping the cell from making the protein at the genetic level or through promoting pathways that remove bad proteins. This talk will focus on recent research and new treatments in Huntington disease, a devastating inherited neurodegenerative disease, and how this knowledge can be applied to other neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Dale Martin is an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Biology where he researches how cells remove toxic proteins through a cellular process known as autophagy (literally meaning “self-eating”). Dr. Martin obtained his
undergraduate degree from Dalhousie and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Alberta in Cell Biology.
