The following texts are great for teaching problem and solution. I’ve provided

organizers/worksheets for your students to use that would nicely accompany these texts. However, these organizers would

work with other texts as well.

o Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion

o Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

o Franklin's Bad Day by Paulette Bourgeois

o Knuffle Bunny by Mo Williams

o Prudy's Problem and How She Solved It by Carey Armstrong-Ellis

Use the following lesson plan and activities to teach your students all about problem and solution. You can decide, based on your students’ ability level, whether you do all

four case files or not.

After your students complete the four case files, they can move onto the extension activities that are provided for you. You can decide if you want your students to

complete this activity independently, with a partner, or in a small group.

Before the lesson, stuff a large manila envelope with the following:

• Letter to students • Case Files • Observation Recording Sheet (1 per student)

Page 10: what’s PROBLEM? SO, WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?georgearmstrongelementary.enschool.org/ourpages/auto/2020/3/20/58643978...Mar 20, 2020  · o Prudy's Problem and How She Solved It by Carey

LESSON PLAN

• Display the “Wanted” poster for all students to see. Read the poster aloud to them.

• Pass out the envelope with the letter from The Problem Detective Club. Or, read the letter aloud to the class. Ask students if they would like to be a part of the club.

• Break students into pairs or small groups. Explain that they will receive an envelope filled with case files. Have students read each case file and identify the problem. Have students talk with their groups to come up with possible solutions to the problem.

• On their Observation Recording Sheet, have students write the problem and the best solution to the problem for each case file.

• After they complete the recording sheet, gather back together and discuss their solutions.

• Have students place all of their case files and observations back in the manila folder to “ship off” to The Problem Detective Club for the detectives to look over.

• After lunch or specials, have students come back to the classroom to find a special Certificate of Membership waiting for them on their desks, which explains that they are now a part of The Problem Detective Club.

Extension Activities: There are many different extension activities to choose from. It is up to you when you choose to use them!

CASE FILE 1 Dave was lonely. He had no one to play with. One day, he was building a block tower all by himself when Matthew joined him and asked if he could use two of the blocks. “NO, THEY ARE MINE!” yelled Dave. Matthew said, “Fine, I don’t want to be your friend anyway.” Dave began to cry. He knew he would never make friends this way!

Becky and Jessica were getting unpacked in the morning. They were having a great morning until Jessica realized she had forgotten her homework on the kitchen table. “OH NO! I’m going to be in big trouble!” said Jessica. Becky tried to make Jessica feel better, but nothing seemed to work. Oh no! It was the first day of school and Michael woke up late! He quickly got dressed, but then spilled grape juice all over his shirt at breakfast. “I’m going to miss the bus,” he shouted! He ran as fast as he could to the bus but it was too late. “This year is going to be AWFUL,” he thought.

When Abby got to school she realized she left her lunchbox at home. “Oh no! What am I going to eat? I’m going to be so hungry!” she said. Abby began to cry. She didn’t know what to do!
