BEST OF LUCKTO THE MAGIC MILLIONS GRADUATES RUNNING

IN TODAY’S GROUP RACES

(Gr 3, 2030m) on 29 April, is one of the leading contenders for Macdonald and his training partner Andrew Gluyas at Morphettville today.

The co-trainers will also saddle Royal Rumble (New Approach) in the R A Lee Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), who has also won his past three starts, Pretty Punk (Rebel Raider) in the SA Fillies Classic (Gr 3, 2500m) and Gogo Grace (New Approach) in the Proud Miss Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Macdonald told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that the long delay prior to the South Australian Derby led to Waging War playing up and scratched at the barriers.

“He was scratched at the barriers after standing in there for nearly ten minutes. He just had a bit of blood in his mouth and the vet wouldn’t let him run,” Macdonald said.

“This race wasn’t on the agenda for him but seeing him the past week and we want to see if he will run a trip. I am fairly sure he will and he is going to get better as he gets older.

“Next spring who knows where he will end up. He might take the next step and he has already taken a step from a couple of country wins to a Group Three race.”

To be ridden by regular jockey Clare Lindop from barrier 12, Waging War is likely to settle back in the field early from the wide draw.

Macdonald said Waging War, who is by his former Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Rebel Raider (Reset), had always shown talent.

“He’s shown us a bit and we took him to the country (at Strathalbyn on 5 April) to win a mile race and then he went to Murray Bridge (over 2206 metres) against olders to see if he would stay because he is by Rebel Raider out of a Galileo mare,” he said.

“It wasn’t a very strong race, but he won pretty well by three lengths and went on to win the Chairman’s Stakes at his next start.

“There were a few hard luck stories in that race, but he went to the front before the turn and won, so I don’t think there were too many excuses (for his rivals).”

Waging War is rated a $10 chance with CrownBet behind the $2 favourite, the Darren Weir-trained High Church (High Chaparral), who won the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) last start, and the Tony McEvoy-trained Time To Test (Testa Rossa) ($4.40).

Meanwhile, Macdonald said Royal Rumble ($9) deserved his chance in the R A Lee Stakes after winning his past three starts at Morphettville.

A four-year-old gelding, Royal Rumble takes on the Weir-trained Burning Front (Primus), who is the $2 favourite after winning the VOBIS Gold Mile (1600m) at Caulfield on 22 April, Victoria Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Hooked (Casino Prince) ($3.40) and last start Caulfield winner Rhythm To Spare (Pins) ($5.50).

“He has won his last three and is obviously going very well, but it is a good class race and while he is not badly in on the weight scale, neither is Burning Front,” the Morphettville-based trainer said.

“He is always a chance as he is a very honest horse. From barrier seven he’ll go back as he always goes back.”

Hill Smith Stakes (Listed, 1800m) winner Pretty Punk has raced below Macdonald’s expectations this campaign, but the trainer is hopeful the step up to 2500 metres will see the three-year-old in contention in the SA Fillies Classic.

As well as her Listed victory, Pretty Punk also ran third in the Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m) last October and was fourth in the Laelia Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Morphettville on 8 April, a race won by the Weir-trained Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt) three starts ago.

On Wednesday, Pretty Punk drew barrier 18 in the field of 16 plus three emergencies, with the the Robbie Griffiths-trained So Distinct

(So You Think) having already been scratched from the Group Three race.

“She hasn’t had a lot of luck in her races this time in. Once again she has no luck where she is drawn. It would be fair to say she has been a bit disappointing this preparation,” he said.

“She ran third in a Geelong Classic over 2200 metres and then ran fifth in the Wakeful over 2000 metres, so I think she will run the trip. Her worst run was in the Australiasian Oaks, but that was a hot race and I don’t think this race is of that quality.”

In the last race Macdonald and Gluyas have Gogo Grace in the Proud Miss Stakes for fillies and mares and will be ridden by Lindop from barrier 15 with three scratchings already confirmed yesterday.

Gogo Grace won a Benchmark 70 over 1100 metres against her own sex at Morphettville first up on 4 March and came from last to run fifth over 1050 metres last Saturday at the Adelaide racecourse.

Macdonald said the three-year-old appeared outclassed but connections were hoping to add value to her as a broodmare with a strong stakes race performance.

“It is a very strong race I thought and from her wide barrier she will have her work cut out,” he said.

“We are just trying to get a bit of black type with her. Her first up win was solid and her last start was pretty good as she came from three lengths last on the home turn to finish it off well (to run fifth) over 1050 metres.”

Australia

Hit It A Bomb Will Not Shuttle US stud Spendthrift Farm yesterday announced Hit It A Bomb (War Front), a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 8f) winner, will not shuttle to Spendthrift Australia this year after a deal was brokered for him to stand in South America. “We did not anticipate such strong late interest in shuttling Hit It a Bomb, and an unforeseen opportunity came about that was too good to turn down,” said Wayne B Hughes, owner of Spendthrift. “It was a difficult business decision to send him to South America, and we regret any confusion this may cause. I want to make it clear that we will continue to be committed to bolstering our stallion operation at Spendthrift Australia.”

BOBS Scheme Enhanced To Include Mare OwnersThe Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme (BOBS), which operates in NSW, will be expanded to include mare owners to the tune of an additional $2,000,000, Racing NSW announced yesterday. The enhancement of the scheme, which operates in NSW two and three-year-old races except for stakes races, meaning the owners of mares who win metropolitan races on Saturdays will receive a $5,000 bonus. Meanwhile, weekday metropolitan and highway races have been boosted to $2,500, provincial and country races increased to $1,250 and owners of non-TAB winners will receive $312.50. The changes will come into effect from 1 August this year and will be trialled

for three years. “I greatly appreciate the work done by Thoroughbred Breeders NSW who have been the architects of this new element to BOBS,” Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys said.

Two For Thompson In Doomben CupThe prospect of a heavy track has Randwick trainer John Thompson confident his Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) runners Maurus (Medicean) and Astronomos (New Approach) can be competitive. The Waratah Thoroughbreds-owned pair are rising in class for the Group One race but Thompson says the wet track suits both horses. Maurus ran third last start in the A D Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m), while Astronomos most recently ran fourth in the Lord Mayors Cup

(Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill on 6 May. “Maurus is just coming right at his third run in,” Thompson said. “He just peaked on his run over the final stages on a leader biased track in the Hollindale Stakes. A soft track third run in will be in his favour and the only worry is his barrier 16.”

Wet Track Worry For PrefermentJockey Hugh Bowman is concerned multiple Group One winner Preferment (Zabeel) may struggle on a heavy track in the Doomben Cup today. Preferment ran fourth in the A D Hollindale Stakes last start, his best performance this preparation, but the wet surface has Bowman unsure about his prospects of landing another Group One win. "If the track was a Good track I would be really confident of him making his presence felt," Bowman told Racing.com. "If it's wet, Chris (Waller) may still run him because there's not a lot else for him, but he may scratch him. The wide draw is a bonus because he likes a lot of room so I'm not worried about the wide draw. I'm actually pleased with it but if the track is wet it is not ideal.”

Stephenson Happy With OutsiderVeteran Toowoomba trainer Richie Stephenson is undaunted about taking on a high-class field in the Doomben Cup with his four-year-old Emphasis (Domesday). The gelding ran second in the Members’ Handicap (Listed, 1600m) on 13 May and Stephenson is happy to back him up in the Group One race today with Ronnie Stewart taking the ride. “My last Group One runner was Royal Samurai in a Stradbroke Handicap about 25 years ago. A horse called Rendoo fell in front of him. Royal Samurai had to hurdle the fallen horse but still finished close up,” Stephenson said. “I rarely have expensive horses but Emphasis deserves a go against the best.”

Splurge Ready For BRC SprintIn-form New Zealand four-year-old Splurge (Savabeel) is on track to make a strong Australian debut in today’s BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben. The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained entire won the Darley Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie on 4 March before

winning over 1200 metres in open company at Te Rapa on 29 April. Richards’s confidence in Splurge, however, has been tempered by the wet track today. “Hopefully the rain that’s around will miss Doomben,” Richards said. “His work on Tuesday was very good and we’re pleased with him. He’s in the best of form – he’s a really classy individual.”

Strawberry Boy To Resume For DunnRising nine-year-old Strawberry Boy (Redoute’s Choice) will make his stable debut for new trainer Matthew Dunn in the BRC Sprint. Formerly trained by Gai Waterhouse, Peter Moody and Chris Waller, the John Singleton-bred and owned gelding has been given two barrier trials this preparation, the latest at Deagon on 9 May when third over 1200 metres to stablemate Perfect Dare (Fastnet Rock). He will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from barrier one today. “Strawberry Boy has won four times first up and he has won twice on soft tracks. He isn’t getting any younger but this race should suit,” Dunn said.

M O R N I N G B R I E F Saturday 20 May 2017

Doomben Rated Heavy NineStewards expect today’s Doomben race meeting to go ahead on a heavy track after the weather caused further problems including the cancellation of racing at Ipswich yesterday. Doomben missed much of the heavy rain that soaked parts of south-east Queensland but the track still recorded close to 25 millimetres. Senior steward Dan Aurisch and Doomben track manager Jim Roberts walked the circuit this afternoon and decided on a rating downgrade to Heavy 9. "It is a genuine heavy and there has been no drying weather. The rain is expected to stay around to early tomorrow morning and the forecast is for showers tomorrow," Aurisch said. "There seems little doubt the track will be heavy."

Parish Riding Faatinah In GoodwoodCory Parish will ride the Lindsay Park-trained Faatinah (Nicconi) in today’s The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville after fellow jockey Regan Bayliss was injured at Geelong Synthetic racecourse yesterday. Bayliss broke his wrist when falling from the Lindsay Park-trained two-year-old Amschel (Testa Rossa), fracturing a wrist. Bayliss, who rode five winners on the Geelong Synthetic track on Tuesday, is expected to be sidelined for up to five weeks. Parish, meanwhile, will partner Group Two winner Faatinah, who ran fourth last start in the D C McKay Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Morphettville on 6 May.

Just Junior Ready For RamsdenJust Junior (Green Perfume), a half-brother to Grand Annual (5500m) winner Regina Coeli (Pure Theatre), will relish the step up in distance of today’s Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 3200m), according to trainer Ciaron Maher. The seven-year-old has resumed form nearly three years away from racing this preparation to finish runner-up over 2350 metres at Warrnambool on 2 May. Maher then gave Just Junior a hurdle barrier trial over 2400 metres on 10 May to prepare for today’s Listed race at Flemington. “He won a 3000 metre race at the Valley going back a while but he hasn’t raced a lot since,”

Maher said. “I still think the ability is there but he appreciates a bit of give in the track which he might not get on Saturday.” Radipole To Debut At FlemingtonTrainer Mike Moroney believes European import Radipole (Rock Of Gibraltar), who raced as Justwantacontact in France, is sharp enough to perform well over 1400 metres at his Australian debut at Flemington. The four-year-old won four of his eight starts in France, including his last start in September when taking out the Millkom Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Toulouse. "He's really a mile to 2000 metre horse, we bought him for that sort of thing," Moroney told Racing.com. "He's a lovely horse, he was just a little bit scratchy, typical of the European horses, when he first got here but this campaign we actually stopped and gelded him and he's been really good."

Juvenile Grandioso Keeps SurprisingUnbeaten Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained juvenile Grandioso (Sebring) continues to surprise the stable and they are again confident the gelding can put in a strong performance in today’s two-year-old race at Flemington. A debut winner at Bendigo on 19 April, Grandioso came from a long last to win an Inglis bonus race over 1200 metres at Wagga on 4 May to remain undefeated. "He's been a real revelation," Lee Freedman told Racing.com. "He was a cheap yearling and he was going OK then he's come out and he's won his first two starts, albeit by protest the first time, but his sectional times, particularly at Wagga - closing times off giving them a big start - were very impressive.”

Indernile To Race Closer To SpeedCaulfield trainer Gerard Moloney believes promising two-year-old Indernile (Street Boss) gets his chance to win his first race at Flemington today over 1400 metres after three strong performances in stakes company to start his career. The colt ran third in the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m) and seventh in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) before resuming with a fourth in the Redoute’s Choice Stakes (Listed, 1200m)

at Caulfield on 29 April. "In his other runs he's never drawn inside ten so from that barrier on Saturday he won't get as far back as what he's been getting and he won't give them as big a start," Moloney told Racing.com. Click here to view the Flemington acceptances.

Bonny O’Reilly To Run At RosehillThe Bjorn Baker-trained Bonny O’Reilly (O’Reilly) will run at Rosehill today instead of starting from a wide barrier instead of tackling the Bright Shadow Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben. The four-year-old, who resumed with a win at Rosehill on 6 May over 1100 metres, will run over 1200 metres today with Jason Collett taking the ride. “I'd like to get her up there and chase some black type at some stage through the carnival,” Baker said. “We'll see what happens on Saturday and go from there. She's in good order and I think she handles any track.”

New Universe Kept To SprintsImpressive first up Rosehill winner New Universe (Darci Brahma) will be kept to sprint distances by trainer Chris Waller for the short-term. The former New Zealand-raced gelding, who has won three of his four starts, came from last to win over 1200 metres at Rosehill on 6 May. He will have his second Australian start at Rosehill today over 1100 metres with Tommy Berry retaining the ride. “He couldn’t have been more impressive. He went back from a wide gate, won it with ease,” Waller said. “I think quite often we step horses up too quick. They’re injecting a lot of prize money into sprint races so he’s a horse that we’ll target at sprints until such time he needs to step up to 1400 metres or even a mile,” Click here to view the Rosehill acceptances.

Impending Wins TrialGodolphin-owned three-year-old Impending (Lonhro), who could be set for the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm next month, impressively won a 1050 metre barrier trial at Randwick yesterday. The Darren Beadman-trained colt, who ran third last start in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (registered as Royal Sovereign Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) on 9

April, settled last for jockey Tye Angland in heat three before sprinting home strongly to win by a length and a quarter in 1:03.40 seconds on a Good 4 surface. Stablemate Jemadar (Sepoy) ran second, with Boss Lane (Dubawi) finishing third.

Mediterranean Wins TrialStakes-performed Peter and Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old Mediterranean (Smart Missile) won heat four at Randwick yesterday over 1050 metres. Runner-up in the Rosebud (Listed, 1200m) last August, Mediterranean settled in third place for jockey Blake Shinn before extending in the straight to win by three lengths in 1:03.90. Now a gelding, it was Mediterranean’s second barrier trial this preparation after finishing fifth at Rosehill over 900 metres on 8 May. The Peter Robl-trained Centre Pivot (More Than Ready) finished second, having not raced since the Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Randwick on 26 January.

Arbeitsam Impressive In Randwick Hit OutThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old Arbeitsam (Snitzel) yesterday won a 1050 metre barrier trial by 13 lengths. Competing in heat five, the gelding was sent straight to the lead by jockey Josh Parr and was asked to find the line late, winning by the big margin over runner-up Burning Passion (Northern Meteor). New Zealand Listed winner Astara (Dalghar), who is now trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, finished third. Arbeitsam has won twice from six starts and is set to resume at Rosehill on 3 June. Click here to view the Randwick barrier trial replays.

Tourneur Injured In Barrier MishapAdelaide jockey Dom Tourneur has once again been injured after fracturing a foot in a barrier mishap. The injury sees the prominent South Australian jockey out of the saddle again having only just returned to race riding after fracturing four ribs in a trackwork. He had ridden a winner at Balaklava on Wednesday, with replacement riders needed for his mounts at Morphettville today and Strathalbyn tomorrow.

Victorian Trainers Face Charges Over AltercationVictorian trainers Mark Thomas and Shannon Hope face conduct charges over two separate altercations with each other. Thomas has been charged for an incident on 9 October last year with stewards alleging he went to the Seymour stables of Lee and Shannon Hope and engaged in a verbal altercation with the latter while in possession of a firearm. Stewards allege Hope engaged in a verbal altercation with Thomas at trackwork at Seymour on 6 February before striking him on the left side of his face. The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will hear the improper conduct charges brought against the two on a date to be determined.

Wagga And Ipswich AbandonedHeavy rain saw the last six races at Wagga called off because of safety concerns. After two races, stewards were forced to postpone yesterday’s program because of poor visibility. Earlier in the day, the Ipswich race meeting in Queensland was called off as rain hits the eastern seaboard.

Rotorua Stakes Test For UnderthemoonlightTrainer Karyn McQuade is hoping for a good show from Underthemoonlight (El Hermano) when she lines up in the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) today. The five-year-old mare, who won the Taranaki Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on 8 October, has run twice this preparation with her best performance coming when she ran second in the Finance Sprint Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Hawke’s Bay on 15 April and she wa most recently seen finishing third over 1200 metres at Te Rapa on 29 April. “She’s come back a lot more solid and confident in everything she does,” McQuade said. “She’s strengthened up and she’s good to go for Sunday.”

Alinko Prince Working WellThe Fraser Auret-trained Alinko Prince (Alamosa) will look to secure his second stakes victory when he resumes in the Rangitikei Gold Cup (Listed, 1550m) at Awapuni today. The five-

year-old has not been seen since running 14th in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) having taken out the Marton Cup (Listed, 2200m) on her previous start and Auret is looking for a bold show from the gelding having been pleased with a piece of work he did on Wednesday. “He galloped particularly well on Wednesday morning on a loose track and I’m very happy with him,” Auret told www.theinformant.co.nz.

New Yearling Manager For PencarrowDominic Corban has been appointed the new yearling manager at Pencarrow Stud it was announced yesterday. Corban has previously worked at Sir Patrick Hogan's Cambridge Stud for more than ten years, three as yearling manager, and more recently was yearling manager at Newgate Farm in New South Wales. “The opportunity to work with Sir Peter Vela and Leon Casey at Pencarrow was one I simply couldn't miss," said Corban. "Along with superb facilities, Pencarrow has one of the strongest blue blood broodmare bands in New Zealand. And I look forward to preparing my first draft of Pencarrow yearlings for the Sales at Karaka in January."

Walsh Joins NZTRFormer champion jockey David Walsh is to take up a full time role with New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and will next month begin working as the NZTR training and welfare officer for the South Island. Walsh will be based in Christchurch and will also have responsibility for health and safety and licensing. Part of his role will be to mentor and support apprentice jockeys and the promotion of careers in thoroughbred racing. “I’m really looking forward to the [NZTR] job,” Walsh said. “I didn’t want to leave the industry and this has come along at the right time. “I’ve already been helping the young riders down here [in Canterbury] off and on for the last five or six years.”

Lotus Handicap (1600m) at Sha Tin tomorrow. The four-year-old colt, who won two of his six starts in South Africa, and was also third in both the Selangor Cup (Gr 2, 1600m) and the Cape Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), has run twice since being transferred to Tony Millard, including finishing last start fourth over 1600 metres at Sha Tin. “His two runs here in Hong Kong have been very good - he’s had a bad draw for both of those races and now he has a bad draw again but we have to deal with it. If I get a good run, he’s a really smart horse and he’s going to run to the line,” said Teetan.

Draw In Bo Bo’s FavourJockey Joao Moreira hopes the better draw (2) for Regency Bo Bo (Denman) will help him to win the Districts Cup (1400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The Tony Cruz-trained three-year-old has won two from nine starts, the latter of those back in December, and has finished second on his two most recent starts, ridden by Moreira on both occasions. “Fortunately, this time he’s got a good gate and that’s definitely going to help him,” the Moreira said. “Two starts ago, when I rode him, he was a bit cranky in the gate. We worked that out and his next start I was able to get him out of the gate and place him better in the field. I hope I can get him to do things right in the gate, jump out properly, and I believe he’s a winning chance.” Click here to view the fields for Sha Tin on Sunday.

Dartmouth Lands Yorkshire CupThe Sir Michael Stoute-trained Dartmouth (5 h

Dubawi - Galatee by Galileo) left it late to land the Yorkshire Cup (Gr 2, 1m5f) at York yesterday and provide this trainer with a fifth win in the race. The five-year-old, who has not been seen running second in the Canadian International (Gr 1, 12f) last October, was settled in midfield by Ryan Moore in the early stages of the race with High Jinx (High Chaparral) setting good early fractions. As the field approached the final two furlongs, Moore switched Dartmouth onto the stands rail and he looked to still have a lot of ground to make up on Simple Verse (Duke Of Marmalade), who was coming home strongly on the other side of the track. But the five-year-old entire was able to find more under pressure to eventually come away with just a neck victory over Simple Verse with the same distance back to High Jinx in third.

100 For High Chaparral

The Michael Bell-trained Main Desire (2 f ex Purple Glow by Orientate) landed the Marygate Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 5f) at York yesterday and in the process provided the late Coolmore shuttler High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) with

his 100th stakes winner. The two-year-old filly, who won her first start over five furlongs at Nottingham on 2 May, tracked the leaders near the stands rail under Danny Tudhope in the early stages. After being asked for her effort entering the final furlong she was able to respond in taking fashion to score by half a length from Neola (Foxwedge) with another length and a half back to Mistress Of Venice (Bated Breath) in third. High Chaparral died at Coolmore in Ireland in 2014 at the age of 15.

99 For Invincible Spirit Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) sired his 99th stakes winner when the Roger Varian-trained Tomyris (3 f ex Totally Devoted by Seeking the Gold) landed the Michael Seely Memorial (Listed, 1m) at York yesterday at only her third start. Tomyris was settled near the rear by Andrea Atzeni before being delivered with her challenge at the two furlong marker and joining the leader Sibilance (Bated Breath) inside the final furlong. After taking the lead, she was able to stay on strongly to see off the late challenge of On Her Toes (Kodiac) to eventually beat her by three quarters of a length with another two and half lengths back to Sibilance in third. Invincible Spirit stands at the Irish National Stud for a €120,000 and his 99 stakes winners include 15 Group One winners.

second in the Newmarket Classic, Hydrangea (Galileo), Alluringly (Fastnet Rock) and Rain Goddess (Galileo), who are all also among the declarations. Other notable confirmations include the Joseph O’Brien-trained Intricately (Fastnet Rock), while US-based trainer Kenny McPeek has entered Grade Two winner Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy) in the £500,000 Classic.

Aftercare Advocates Stress Owner Responsibility International advocates for equine aftercare emphasised owner responsibility and humane treatment for horses whose racing or breeding careers have ended, during the two day International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses (IFAR), which held its first conference in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday and Thursday. IFAR conference also covered all aspects of Thoroughbred aftercare, including post-racing options, connecting aftercare and horseplayers, harmonisation of the rules of racing for owners, and standards for aftercare providers.

Churchill Likely For Irish Guineas

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has said that ‘there is a good chance’ 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Churchill (Galileo) will run in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at the Curragh on Saturday week, rather than run in the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom on 3 June. The three-year-old colt, who won the Curragh National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) and the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) last season,

was backed into favouritism for the Epsom Classic following his victory in the Newmarket Group One, but O’Brien has said he is leaning towards keeping him over a mile. "There is a good chance Churchill will run in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, though nothing is set in stone,” O’Brien told the Irish Independent. Caravaggio To Return TomorrowUnbeaten colt Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) looks set to make his much anticipated seasonal reappearance in the Lacken Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Naas tomorrow, when he featured among the nine declarations for the Group Three yesterday. The Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old, who has not been since he took out the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at the Curragh last August, and he will line up alongside stablemate Pedestal (Invincible Spirit). Trainer Jessica Harrington looks set to saddle last start Power Stakes (Listed, 6f) winner Khukri (Sepoy) and Tinder (Fast Company) in the Group Three race.

Dual Group One winner and former New Zealand Champion three-year-old Puccini (Encosta De Lago) will join the

Mapperley Stud roster where he will stand this first season for an introductory fee of NZ$5,000 (plus GST).

Trained by Peter and Jacob McKay, Puccini won eight of his 57 career starts including the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) with career prize money totalling $1,098,562.

"He was the best three-year-old in New Zealand by a country mile and he trained on as a four-year-old for another great season," Simms Davison of Mapperley Stud said.

"He's a good-looking, correct horse with a great nature – he's very exciting."

Puccini broke his maiden over 1800 metres at Taupo as a three-year-old in

August 2013, before finishing fourth in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). He enjoyed his first stakes race victory when beating Gobi Ranger (Tale Of The Cat) in the Great Northern Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie and then ran fourth in the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m).

The three-year-old the tasted this second stakes race victory when taking out the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) on 1 February, which he then followed by landing the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) later that same month. The most high-profile victory of his career came when he landed the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), beating subsequent Group One winner Rising Romance (Ekraar) by a comfortable two lengths.

He was then sent to Australia where he ran twice, finishing 12th in the Rosehill

Puccini To Stand at Mapperley StudGuineas (Gr 1, 2000m) and fifth behind Criterion (Sebring) in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).

Puccini was kept in training as a four-year-old and enjoyed a successful campaign, winning the Metric Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) second up and the Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) on his fourth start at four.

After dead-heating for second with Nashville (Darci Brahma) in the 2014 Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) he won his second Group One three starts later, when he took out the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham on 24 January.

As a five-year-old, he was moved to trainer Darren Weir’s Melbourne stable after four starts in New Zealand and finished second in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Caulfield on 14 November in his first start for his new trainer.

Following 11 starts with Weir, with his best performance coming when running second in the Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) at Doomben, he was moved to trainer Wayne Walters.

He ran 13 times for Walters, including finishing second in the both the Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2500m) on 3 December and he occupied that same position in the Lord Reims Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Morphettville on 4 March.

Puccini is out of the Listed-winning Paris Opera (Marscay) mare Miss Opera, making him a half-brother multiple Group One winner Sir Slick (Volksraad) and the dam of Group Two winner Amarula (Thorn Park) and Little Wonder (Volksraad), who won two Group Threes.

"The mare produces durable horses who perform at the top level," Davison said. "He's got a fantastic New Zealand pedigree and he represents outstanding value."

Puccini was bred by the late Paul Smithies and his wife Cushla, of Monovale Farm, and the family will stand the stallion with Mapperley.

"This is very much a family-orientated partnership and Monovale will be sending a lot of their top mares to Puccini, as will Mapperley.”

"We have formed the Puccini Club, which will offer huge rewards to breeders who commit to the horse for a number of years."

jockey to do the form, chase the right rides, get on the right horses in track work, establish the right relationships and deal with the inevitable disappointment of being replaced on a horse you’ve groomed. Not to mention dealing with the similarly inevitable losing run.

It requires a level of hard work and discipline which is beyond many a young rider but not beyond Clipperton who immediately strikes you as sensible, balanced and hardworking. He obligingly made time to speak to me during one of the recent major meetings in Hong Kong.

“Is he really as a good a guy as he seems to be?” I couldn’t help but ask some of the Hong Kong based journalists who deal with him on a more frequent basis. “Oh yes,” was the unanimous reply.

Clipperton immersed himself in the Hong Kong project from the moment it became a possibility. “It was a dream of mine, for some reason, to ride in Hong Kong although I didn’t expect the opportunity would come along as early as it did. I did have a very good season in Australia the year before which obviously helped,” he said.

That very good season included two Group One wins early in 2016 - claiming the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) aboard English (Encosta De Lago) and winning the Coolmore Classic (registered as TAD Kennedy Stakes) on Peeping (Redoute’s Choice) for former master Ron Quinton.

“I came to Hong Kong very well prepared. I spent a lot of time studying the racing and the

Sam Clipperton, at just 23, has done extraordinarily well in his first season in one of the world’s toughest riding environments.

He’s in contention to finish third on the jockey’s table - a mini premiership in itself given that nobody will finish within cooee of Joao Moreira and Zac Purton as was also the case last season.

He’s ridden 35 winners for the racing year which is just three shy of Brett Prebble’s best first season return (in 2004-2005) of the Australian jockeys currently riding in Hong Kong.

It is particularly noteworthy given that other Australian jockeys have failed in Hong Kong when considered ‘too young’ and given that there’s not too many scraps to fight over after Moreira and Purton have helped themselves to the tastiest offerings.

Therein lies the problem and dealing with it is the key to success for any jockey newcomer to Hong Kong. The jockeys are not permitted to have a manager save for the first six weeks when a club appointee assists with introductions and procuring rides.

After that initiation, it is entirely down to the

form before I arrived. I sought a lot of advice from people like Tommy Berry, Darren Beadman and Ron (Quinton) whom I still speak to two or three times a week.

“I knew I had to be very fit so I worked on that. I knew I’d be thrown in at the deep end so I got here early to be well prepared, do some ground work and be seen to be working hard. I thought I was ready when I rode at my first meeting but really I was still pretty overwhelmed. My eyes were popping out of my head,” Clipperton said.

The young jockey, who grew up around Sydney’s northern beaches and whose family had no racing connections, nonetheless was happy to persevere.

“I kept at it and once I was here, the other more experienced Aussie jockeys like Zac (Purton), Brett (Prebble) and Nash (Rawiller) were happy to offer advice and keep my spirits up. Nash said ‘don’t change the way you ride, just put your style into Hong Kong’ which gave me reassurance,” Clipperton said.

Clipperton says Rawiller’s 16 year-old son Campbell has become his ‘best mate’ despite the age difference. “He’s very mature and a

great kid. Bit like a little brother, I suppose. He’s around the trainer’s hut every morning,” Clipperton.

Young Rawiller is also quite expert at doing the form and much more out-going than his father which has apparently caused some resentment among other jockeys who see the youngster as a ‘quasi’ manager.

Clipperton has been joined, in Hong Kong, by his partner Morgan Meyer who’s studying sports science and nutrition. “Obviously it’s great to have her here. You need another focus here as it can be quite mentally draining.

“Even so, we love the place, doing new things and I love the racing here. I think here you have to be a bit sharper on and off the track than at home. I’ve been fortunate to have good support from John Moore and from several of the local trainers,” he said.

Clipperton, whose affinity with horses began with a chance trail ride when on a family holiday and progressed to show jumping and eventing, credits Quinton and his wife Margaret - who died in January this year - as having the greatest influence on his career.

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 16 |

S T E V E M O R A N

“I am now so glad Margaret was able to come up here the month before she died. I lived with Ron and Margaret for four years and they were like parents to me,” he said.

Clipperton, at the time of her funeral, also said: "Ronnie showed me how to ride and to become a man, Margaret did everything else. She was always there to help me. When I went to Hong Kong she used to ring every week, sometimes more than once, and talk to me about everything but racing.”

Clipperton is hopeful that Hong Kong might prove to be his ‘gateway to the rest of the world’ as he continues to hone his craft.

“I’m constantly watching replays, critiquing what I do and trying to learn from what other jockeys do in a race. I see myself staying here for quite some time but I’ve got goals in Australia and around the world and hopefully riding here can be a pathway. You look at guys like Hughie (Bowman) and Tommy (Berry) who’ve enhanced their reputations riding here and I strive to be like them. I’m not there yet but, at some point, I’d like to be considered among the very best,” he said.

Newcomer Dinghu Mountain (Snitzel) reproduced his smart Sydney form with a slashing debut win at Kranji last night.

The former Chris Waller-trained galloper’s handy record of three wins (1100m to 1400m) in New South Wales, including two at Sydney metropolitan tracks, not to mention his $725,000 price tag at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2014 certainly made for an interesting first-starter for trainer Shane Baertschiger in the $80,000 Class Three race over 1200 metres.

But to score first-up in open company still remained an arduous task, even if his two barrier trials on local soil had been quite pleasing (second and third).

A last-minute riding change does not make the job any easier. With Vlad Duric unable to make the 54 kilograms, Baertschiger went for a jockey he very seldom uses, Benny Woodworth and it proved to be a winning combo.

Jumping smartly from barrier three Dinghu Mountain was not bustled early as Dragon Spirit (Due Sasso) and Conflight (Host) set a solid clip that soon caused the field to string out.

With more galloping space suddenly opening up on his inside, Dinghu Mountain was able to tuck onto the rails ahead of favourite Conilad (Nicconi), enjoy a ground-saving run all the way through from that point onwards.

The Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) four-year-old did not go around any runners as the field fanned out across the track in the home straight,

Michael Lee @anz_news

Dinghu Mountain Defies Wet Track Form To Score On Debut

waiting for Dragon Spirit to roll off the rails. That gap did not quite materialize when

Dragon Spirit shifted out and shifted back in under pressure, but Group One-winning Woodworth showed plenty of pluck as he drove Dinghu Mountain straight through the narrow breach towards a clear passage to the post.

Conilad, who was resuming from a three-month break, made his presence felt when he came testing Dinghu Mountain on the outside, but his dash lacked a bit of sharpness. Dinghu Mountain showed no signs of letting up as he kept going to score with one and half lengths to spare from Conilad with Winning Man (Patapan) just a head away in third. The winning time was 1:9.92 on the Long Course.

Baertschiger said he was not too worried by all the reports about the Lai Chan Cheong-owned galloper being a wet tracker.

“I know some people were worried about him winning all his three races on soft tracks, but if you do your homework, he did run second on a good track at Rosehill,” said Baertschiger.

“He has trained and trialled very well. He was a little caught behind the other horse but when it stayed open on the inside, he went through and scored a nice win.

“Benny rode him very well. It’s great to have the in-form jockey on board, he was on top of the pile, anyway.”

Woodworth may not get the opportunities that some of the leading expat jockeys enjoy at Kranji, but whenever he throws his leg over a good sort, he rarely lets the chance go begging. And there was no better example than his sterling frontrunning ride aboard outsider Forever Young (Run Away And Hide) in the Singapore Guineas (SGP Gr 1, 1600m) last Sunday.

The versatile Malaysian jockey was again at his ultimate best on the pick-up ride, switching from his usual continental riding style to a more Australian style to the same winning effect.

“The horse travelled very well, but was reluctant to take the gap in the straight,” said Woodworth.

“When he finally went through, he kicked on very strongly. He is definitely of Class Three quality, and will keep improving here.”

TAB MEETINGS

CRANBOURNE (VIC) Good(4)R1: Obrien R/E - 13000 Obrien Mdn, $25000, 1600m.1. SOLO HEART (AUS) (br g 3 So You Think (NZ) - Link To My

Heart (USA)). T: C J Waller J: C Newitt2. Subutai (NZ) (b/br g 3 Pour Moi (IRE) - Code Black (NZ)).3. One Blink (AUS) (b c 3 Beneteau (AUS) - Banishing (AUS)).Margins: 0.8 lens, 0.8 lens. Time: 1:41.00.

Analysis: The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old Solo Heart appreciated the step up to 1600m at his third race start to score a promising win here. He began well but was eased to settle back in second last place in the seven-horse field before going deep (under riding) approaching the home turn. He then lifted well (under pressure), hit the front at the 50m and went on to score comfortably, looking suited to much further still. He is a horse to watch.

Analysis: Ciaron Maher-trained filly Ruby Sea scored a promising first up win, her first win in three starts to date. After being trapped deep early on, she eased to settle in eighth place (one off the rails). She tracked up nicely (deep) from the 700m, challenged quickly at the home turn and then finished too well to score a very smart win. She is a horse to watch. The Mick Kent-trained filly Radiant Rouge soon drove through to lead, travelled well in front and then fought back well for a good second after running a bold race, her fourth placing in her last four starts.
