Trainer Aaron Purcell, who is overseeing the running of Ciaron Maher’s stable while he serves a six-month suspension, said yesterday that the OTI Racing-owned filly had pleased in her work since her last run on 28 October and that the VRC Oaks had always been her long term aim.

“She is really good. She has come through her last run really well and her work since then has been good,” Purcell told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We have tried to have her peaking fourth up for the Oaks and I think we have got her pretty much spot on.”

Aloisia has been at the head of the betting for the VRC Oaks since her impressive last start victory in the Moonee Valley Vase, when she beat Group

Three winner Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs) by three and a half lengths, and she remains the strong $1.50 favourite with CrownBet.

She ran powerfully through the line on that occasion over 2040 metres, and Purcell does not envisage any problems with the extra distance at Flemington.

“Her attitude and her action and everything about her suggested that

she was always going to be a middle distance, staying filly,” Purcell said. “The way she hit the line last time gave us every indication that the

2500 metres will be up her alley. “She only had the four runs as a two-year-old and on each of those

runs she showed improvement. “She has come back as a three-year-old and each run has been

better again, so there is no reason why she can’t keep improving as she goes along.”

Aloisia’s chief market rival is the improving Pinot (Pierro) ($6.50), who made virtually all the running to land the Ethereal Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield last month for co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

The lightly-raced filly is out of AJC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Dizelle (Zabeel) from the family of champion Hong Kong stayer Vengeance Of Rain (Zabeel), and Bott believes her stout pedigree will stand her in good stead over the 2500 metre trip.

"She's bred to get it," Bott said."She's an out-and-out stayer and I'm really looking forward to seeing her

at that trip. She'll be one of the ones that will certainly really appreciate it."The VRC Oaks is a race that has so far eluded Australian Racing Hall

of Fame trainer Waterhouse, and Bott confirmed that she is keen to add the Group One to her tally.

"That's certainly one race that Gai was really keen on and intent on trying to win this year," Bott said.

"She's never won a VRC Oaks so it's certainly one that she's been very keen to try to capture.

"We hold this carnival in high regard and wanted to have a presence here and be able to make a statement over the carnival."

Randwick-based trainer John Sargent is also expecting his filly Luvaluva (Mastercraftsman) ($8) to appreciate the step up to 2500 metres in the VRC Oaks.

The New Zealand-bred filly ran out a narrow winner of the Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Flemington just five days ago but hit the line well when coming from last to run down her rivals in the final strides.

"The favourite looks a very good filly, there is no hiding that," Sargent told Racing.com.

"And when you look at how dominant she was at Moonee Valley it is easy to think that she will be very hard to beat in the Oaks.

"But getting out to 2500 metres can sometimes bring them undone and I think my filly will relish it. Luvaluva is a genuine stayer and we want it to be a tough test, that might be our chance.”

Luvaluva will race from barrier ten for jockey Blake Shinn, who was also in the saddle for the Wakeful Stakes on Saturday, and Sargent said he will leave race tactics up to the rider.

"We've always planned to have her peaking for these two runs and I'm delighted with the way she has bounced out of the run last Saturday," he said.

"Tactically, I will just leave it up to Blake, I'd imagine he will let the speed go underneath him and let her find her feet like she did last Saturday."

If Luvaluva can successfully back up in the Oaks today, it would be the second time Sargent has landed the double with the same horse, having completed the feat with Kirramosa (Alamosa) in 2013.

Godolphin duo ready for Kennedy PlateTrainer James Cummings was unsure whether to run Demerara (Commands) again this preparation, but after some serious consideration she will join stablemate Jorda (Exceed And Excel) in the Kennedy Plate (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington today. Demerara finished third behind Blondie (Reward For Effort) in the William Crockett Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley last month and Cummings said jockey Brenton Avdulla, who has the ride again today, was convinced the filly didn't handle the track that day. "We have had a good think about whether we wanted to run her one more time at this carnival and we liked the look of this race," Cummings said. "She has the ability to put herself right there and if she takes some nice experience away from Moonee Valley then she can certainly be competitive against these fillies.”

Moore hopes All Too Huiying can fulfil potentialTrainer Gary Moore will be hoping for a big performance from All Too Huiying (All Too Hard) in the Seppelt Wines Stakes (registered as Batman Stakes) (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington and show Moore that he deserves to be aimed at the ATC

Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 7 April. A winner of his past two starts, All Too Huiying will likely stay in Melbourne and run in the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) on 18 November if he can finish in the top three today. "He's Group Two-placed as a two-year-old over the winter in Brisbane (Champagne Classic). He's a pretty classy animal," Moore said. "There's no issue with his staying and if he continues to improve like I think he will he could be my Derby horse in the autumn."

Redzel to face 13 rivals in Darley Classic

The Everest (1200m) winner Redzel (Snitzel) heads the 14 acceptances for Saturday’s Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington, in what will be his first start since his win in the $10,000,000 race. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained

gelding will start from barrier ten with Kerrin McEvoy booked to take the ride. Multiple Group One winner Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago), who was a controversial late withdrawal at the barriers in last month’s Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), has drawn barrier 13 with Dwayne Dunn booked to take the ride. Lindsay Park have accepted with Group One-winning pair Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) and Vega Magic (Lope De Vega), who have drawn barriers three and four respectively.

Folkswood all set for Emirates StakesThe Charlie Appleby-trained Folkswood (Exceed And Excel) will look to continue his excellent form in Australia when he lines up in the Emirates Stakes (registered as LKS Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding won the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2025m) on his first start in Australia before running a good third behind Winx (Street Cry) in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) last time. "We couldn't be happier with him," Appleby's travelling foreman Chris Connett told Racing.com. "He came out of the race (Cox Plate) very well and he did his last serious gallop on Saturday and then he stretched his legs this morning.” He will face 14 rivals from barrier 15 with Kerrin McEvoy booked to take the ride.

Dee picks up ride on GingernutsAfter Hugh Bowman failed to get his careless riding suspension he picked up on Melbourne Cup day overturned, jockey Michael Dee has been called up to ride the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained multiple Group One winner Gingernuts (Iffraaj) in Saturday’s Emirates Stakes at Flemington. Dee, who was the former apprentice for owners Te Akau in New Zealand, has enjoyed a successful spring so far, winning the The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) on Foundry (Galileo) on 30 September before steering Shillelagh (Savabeel) to victory in the Kennedy Mile (registered as Cantala Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) last Saturday.

Falika draws twoIn form mare Falika (Faltaat) will be hoping to make the step into stakes company a winning one when she lines up in the Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Flemington on Saturday. The Greg Eurell-trained mare has won her three most recent starts and she will look to continue that winning thread from barrier two with in-form jockey Kerrin McEvoy booked to take the ride. Meanwhile, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have accepted with Group Two winner Prompt Response (Beneteau) and Savapinski (Savabeel), who have drawn barriers five and 13 respectively.

Vengeur Masque to run in the Queen Elizabeth StakesAfter missing out on a start in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Vengeur Masque (Monsun) will now take his chance in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Flemington on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding was last seen running second in the Lexus Stakes (registered as Hotham Handicap) (Gr 3, 2500m) on 4 November when trying to gain a ballot exception for the Melbourne Cup. The gelding will race from barrier nine and looks set to face ten rivals, including last start Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Qewy (Street Cry), who has drawn barrier 11.

12 in the Maribyrnong PlateThe Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Bionics (Hinchinbrook) will look to improve his last start second in the Inglis Banner 2YO Stakes (RL, 1000m) on 28 October when he takes his

chance in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington on Saturday from barrier ten. The son of Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) will line up alongside the Tony McEvoy-trained Run Naan (Makfi) (barrier six) who will be looking to follow up his debut victory at Bendigo. Co-trainers Daniel and Ben Pearce have accepted with Agent Pippa (Demerit), who comes into the race off the back of a debut win at Ascot, and she has drawn barrier seven for jockey Craig Williams. Click here to view Saturday’s Flemington acceptances.

Regal Rage in peak condition for RosehillTrainer David Payne will be hoping Regal Rage (Reliable Man) can make his debut a winning one when he runs in Saturday's Schweppes Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill. Regal Rage is the only unraced horse in the race, but Payne is hopeful his five barrier trials will stand him in good stead to make a winning start to his career. "Stayers don't usually show you much over 1000 metres. They're much better on the racetrack once they get up to a distance," Payne said. "If he was within four or five lengths of them I'd very very happy. He's looking for 2000 metres."

Cantbuybetter likely to stay at homeTrainer Ben Currie has said talented gelding Cantbuybetter will need to produce an exceptional run in an open handicap over 1350 metres at Doomben on Saturday to warrant a trip to Western Australia for the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on 25 November. Currie is leaning towards staying in Queensland and aiming the gelding at the $300,000 Bernborough Handicap (Listed, 1600m). "It is a bit hard to pass up that type of money in your own backyard,” said Currie. "The Villiers-Bernborough double is one way to go and the Brisbane Handicap at Doomben is over 1600 metres and worth a bit of money, so we have options. If he does something exceptional on Saturday you would have to consider going. It would have to be a run right out of the bag.”

No Winterbottom defence for TakedownTakedown (Stratum) will not defend his Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) crown after

being found to have suffered a foot laceration. The five-year-old gelding's preparation ended at Randwick on October 28 when he suffered the injury at the start of the Filante Handicap (1400m). "At the start he jumped slightly sideways and Kaepernick's aluminium plate has come in contact with his foot," trainer Gary Moore said. "It's nobody's fault. These things happen in racing. We had a great time last year and unfortunately we're not going to make it this year.” Moore said the laceration was stitched and Takedown would spell for about a month.

Kyneton Cup to Dodging BulletsFollowing Dodging Bullets (Dash For Cash) win in yesterday’s Kyneton Cup (2000m) trainer Symon Wilde believes he is well within his rights to have a tilt in the Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2200m) on 25 November. The six-year-old gelding beat Moonovermanhattan (Manhattan Rain) by a head with another three quarters of a length back to Grand Dreamer (Grand Reve) in third. "The hard track and with them slowing the pace mid-race I don't think it suited him but he was too good on the day," Wilde told Racing.com. "He is in a rare patch of form, he is a really good horse, he is as tough as they come and he is building a really good record. Maybe a race like the Ballarat Cup might be ideal for him, we will just savour this one for the time being.”

Rekindling has pulled up wellTuesday’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Rekindling (High Chaparral) has reportedly pulled up in good condition following his thrilling win in the $6,000,000 race. Trainer Joseph O’Brien said yesterday he expects the colt to improve next season and develop into one of the world’s best stayers. O’Brien also revealed that Rekindling is likely to spell at owners Lloyd Williams’s Macedon Lodge before returning to Ireland for summer campaign geared towards the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) at Royal Ascot. "He'll have a little break and then I think he might come back to Europe next season for maybe a try at a Gold Cup or something like that in the summer, he's an exciting horse for next season,” O’Brien told Racing.com. "I'd like to think so (that the horse will travel to Australia again), absolutely, although it'll be tough to try to do it again.”

Williams already planning seventh win

Less than 24 hours after landing his sixth Melbourne Cup at Flemington, owner Lloyd Williams has said he is already planning the seventh win in the world’s richest handicap. Rekindling gave Williams his sixth win on Tuesday and second in as many years, after Almandin’s (Monsun) victory last season, when he defeated another of the owner’s horses, Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) in the Flemington showpiece. "We start today," Williams said. "I haven't got much time. I'm in the last quarter but we're living and hoping. We've got horses with Aidan and Joseph (O'Brien), we've got yearlings, two-year-olds, three-year-olds and you live in hope. Hopefully there'll be something coming through."

Support for emergency acceptorsSpeaking after Rekindling’s win yesterday, owner Lloyd Williams also threw his support behind declaring emergency acceptors for the Melbourne Cup. The issue of emergencies came up again this year when the Chris Waller-trained Who Shot Thebarman (Yamanin Vital) was withdrawn two days out from Tuesday’s race, leaving a field of 23 to contest the race. Victoria Racing Club chairman Amanda Elliott said she was in ongoing discussions about introducing emergencies and Williams concurred. "I think the Melbourne Cup desperately needs emergencies," Williams said. "As this race is internationalised it was unfortunate Chris Waller's horse was scratched. We did the same thing with a horse called Mourayan on the Monday three or four years ago and someone else was denied a start.”

Caboche suspended for punching fillySouth Australian apprentice jockey Dylan

Caboche has been suspended for two weeks after punching his mount She's Reneldasgirl (Onemorenomore) before a race at Port Lincoln. Footage of the incident shared on social media shows barrier attendants trying to get the fractious filly into the gates, with Caboche aboard, before he dismounted and punched her rib cage. The three-year-old ($101), trained by Allan Jarvis, finished eighth in the ten-horse maiden over 1390 metres. Thoroughbred Racing SA stewards announced the rider's suspension in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon. "Dylan Caboche was suspended under rule AR175(q) (misconduct) for striking his mount prior to loading. Suspended from midnight 17/11/17 to 1/12/17," it reads.

Williams has ban reducedCraig Williams has had his careless riding suspension reduced to eight meetings from 11 following his appeal yesterday. The jockey was suspended for causing interference aboard Ozi Choice (Denman) at Flemington on Tuesday, but the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board chairman John Bowman felt the offence was in the lower range and reduced the punishment. Williams is still set to miss the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Saturday, meaning Luke Nolen has landed the ride aboard Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m).

Leading figures in doping investigationSeveral leading racing figures are believed to be under investigation by Racing Victoria (RV) into allegations of systematic doping. RV stewards are reported to be in possession of text messages from an already banned party that establishes links to trainers based at Caulfield and other parts of the state. Caulfield trainer Robert Smerdon is currently under investigation regarding the alleged race day treatment of Lovani (Lonhro). RV chief steward Terry Bailey would not confirm whether the current investigation had spread further, adding that several interviews had to be conducted before further comment was made.

Saab Hasan capsicum sprayed by policeFlemington-based trainer Saab Hasan was

capsicum sprayed by a police officer on Tuesday evening when attempting to return to his stable at the course. The trainer had arrived back from Wangaratta with Red Gucci (Redente) but was refused entry, and when he attempted to offload the mare from the float he was sprayed by the officer. "He refused me entry and said I have to keep going straight,” Hasan told Racing.com. “I said 'I am going to unload the horse and walk it home' and he said 'If you do that I am going to arrest you'. I said 'The welfare of my horse comes first' so I got out of my car to take the horse off the float and he capsicum sprayed me.” The Victoria Racing Club and RV will investigate the incident.

Queensland prize money boostQueensland racing’s prize money levels are set to rise rise following a government pledge to fully fund all country non-TAB meetings. The Labor government has made an election promise to allocate $17,500,000 per year for the next four years to fund country racing. Racing Queensland (RQ) welcomed the commitment which would triple the current level of country racing support. "While we have seen a significant financial turnaround in the past 12 months, Racing Queensland is still a loss-making organisation and we cannot become sustainable and maintain this level of non-TAB thoroughbred racing without support," RQ chief executive Eliot Forbes said.

New Zealand

Astor suffers mystery setbackSmart three-year-old filly Astor (Iffraaj) is on the mend after suffering a mystery injury on her most recent appearance at Matamata. The Danica Guy-trained filly finished third over 1400 metres behind Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) on 14 October and was found to have suffered an injury to her hind quarters. “She hurt herself last time she raced when she ripped open her backside and it needed stitching, it was quite nasty,” Guy said. “We don’t know how she did it – it’s an absolute mystery. She’s had the stitches out now and we’ll start on her again soon. She was getting pretty worked up so she really needed a break anyway.”

Bring To The Block ready for OtakiTrainer Shane Brown has reported that in-form mare Bring To The Block (Guillotine) is in good shape ahead of the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m) at Otaki today, though the drop back to 1200 metres is a slight query. “She should go well again, although I would be more confident if it was 1400 metres,” Woodville-based Brown said. “I still think she’s good enough to get away with it though, she’s a pretty handy mare. It’s a Pearl Series race and she’s qualified so it’s NZ$19,500 to the winner, it’s like a Saturday race.”

Start Wondering to race at OtakiDual Group One winner Start Wondering (Eighth Wonder) is likely to kick off a new campaign at Otaki next month. The Evan and J J Rayner-trained New Zealand champion sprinter had originally been pencilled in for Saturday’s Legacy Lodge Sprint (Listed, 1200m) at Te Rapa, a race he won 12 months ago, but connections have instead chosen the Levin Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on 1 December as his starting point. “He’s had a couple of jump outs, but he needs another jump out, trial or a gallop at the races,” said J J Rayner.

Asia

Fantastic Eight enters Million Challenge pictureThe Ricky Yiu-trained Fantastic Eight (Duporth) entered the picture for the Hong Kong Airlines Million Challenge after an emphatic victory in the Class Three American Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley yesterday. The victory put Fantastic Eight on the scoreboard in this season’s HK$1,000,000 contest for horses competing in Class Three races and above at Happy Valley. The competition, which began on 6 September, concludes on 21 February and offers a first prize of HK$650,000 to the owner of the

horse that accumulates the most points from first four placings. “For sure, the Million Challenge is something to aim for now,” said Yiu. “He’s a very honest horse, he has a good mindset and he loves getting on that rail. It was a very fast time for a first run here.”

Born In China regains winning threadThe Francis Lui-trained Born In China (Shamardal) gained his first victory since October 2015 when landing the feature Aberdeen Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley yesterday evening. The British-bred gelding, who took out the Britannia Stakes (1m) at Royal Ascot in 2014, won twice during his second season in Hong Kong but had run 11 times since without success. He quickened up well on the inside under Douglas Whyte inside the final 200 metres to beat Archippus (Keeper) by three quarters of a length in yesterday’s HK$1,860,000 race, with House Of Fun (Starcraft) a neck further behind. Highclere Australia purchase Joshua ReynoldsThe progressive John Gosden-trained three-year-old Joshua Reynolds (Nathaniel) was purchased for £160,000 at the Goffs UK Autumn Horses In Training Sale yesterday by Jake Warren and Alex Elliott on behalf of Highclere Australia. The colt, who was catalogued as Lot 192, was a comfortable winner of his most recent start at Chelmsford on 2 November. "He's been bought for Highclere Australia," Alex Elliott told the Racing Post. "They've had some great results with Libran down in Australia, he's won almost $1,200,000 in the past year and was eighth in the Melbourne Cup. He stays two miles well and is from a very good family. He was the one horse here that we thought would work well in Australia.”

Decorated Knight to stand in IrelandMultiple Group One winner Decorated Knight (Galileo) has been retired and will stand at the Irish National Stud next year. The Roger Charlton-trained five-year-old, who is from a top-class Coolmore family including multiple Group One winner Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat), won the Jebel Hatta (Gr 1, 1800m), Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) and the Irish Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) during an excellent 2017 campaign, and was last sighted finishing tenth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) at Del Mar. "The Irish National Stud are thrilled to add a high-class son of Galileo to our burgeoning roster," said the stud's chief executive Cathal Beale. "With performance, physical and pedigree to die for, Decorated Knight ticks all the boxes." A fee will be announced at a later date.

Fee increase for Siyouni

The Aga Khan Studs stallion Siyouni (Pivotal) will stand for an increased fee of €75,000 for the 2018 Northern Hemisphere breeding season. The ten-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful 2017 season, with the Karl Burke-trained Laurens becoming his second Group One winner when landing the Fillies' Mile (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket in October. Meanwhile, multiple Group One-producing sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) will stand for an increased fee of €135,000, up from €125,000, and Zarak (Dubawi), the Group

One-winning son of champion mare Zarkava (Zamindar), will stand for an introductory fee of €12,000.

Medaglia d’Oro fee re-adjusted to US$250,000

Darley America have re-adjusted the fee for shuttler Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) to US$250,000, only weeks after having announced he would stand at Jonabell Farm in 2018 for US$200,000. The figure of US$200,000 was already an increase from US$150,000 in 2017. The fee rise comes after the stallion sired two new Grade

One winners at last weekend’s Breeders’ Cup meeting, with Talismanic winning the Breeders Cup Turf and Bar Of Gold’s victory in the Filly and Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) at Del Mar. Darren Fox, nominations sales manager at Darley in America, said: “Even before the Breeders’ Cup, the demand for Medaglia D’Oro was extremely high. After the wins by Bar Of Gold and Talismanic this past Saturday, we feel it incumbent on us to listen to what the market is telling us and adjust his fee accordingly.” Medaglia d’Oro stands at Darley Kelvinside in New South Wales for $110,000 (inc GST).

Gun Runner to retire after PegasusThe Steve Asmussen-trained Gun Runner (Candy Ride), who took out the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Del Mar last Saturday, will have his final career start in the Pegasus World Cup (Gr 1, 9f) at Gulfstream in January. The colt made all the running to land the US$6,000,000 Grade One five days ago and will retire to stand at Three Chimneys Farm in 2018. "I have been

fortunate enough to own several great horses, but Gun Runner is clearly at the top of my list. He is the horse of a lifetime,” co-owner Ron Winchell told paulickreport.com. "His brilliance was recognisable early and improved with every season. His consistency, soundness and race recovery were comparable to none. These traits should serve him well as a stallion."

Carroll to ride for BakerIrish jockey Gary Carroll is set to head to Australia later this month to work for Warwick Farm-based Bjorn Baker. The 28-year-old rode 27 winners during the Irish turf season and finished off the campaign by landing the valuable November Handicap (1m6f) on the Joe Murphy-trained Swamp Fox (Windsor Knot) at Naas on Sunday. "I'm heading to Australia on 18 November and will be there until February,” Carroll told the Racing Post. "I've never been to Australia and I'm looking forward to going there. It was through connections of (trainer) Ger Lyons that the link with Bjorn Baker came about."

Technically, trainer John Sadler's job was done with regard to Stellar Wind's (Curlin) career around 4:48pm (Pacific Time) on the

evening of Friday's Breeders' Cup meeting. After finishing eighth in the Breeders' Cup

Distaff (Gr 1, 9f) at Del Mar, the five-year-old daughter of Curlin (Smart Strike) was put on a plane bound for Kentucky to begin the next phase of her Eclipse Award-winning career. With her anticipated date inside the Keeneland sales pavilion looming, Sadler was well aware the time had come to hand off his stable star into the care of another.

What the veteran conditioner could not do, however, was let the mare who gave his barn all levels of thrills the past few seasons leave without overseeing one last memorable outing. With Sadler's watchful eye trained on her once more, the leggy chestnut mare made sure

that - this time - there was nothing remotely disappointing in her effort.

Less than 24 hours after champions Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) and Tepin (Bernstein) had the commercial marketplace fawning over them at Fasig-Tipton, Stellar Wind took her turn in the public auction spotlight when she sold to representatives of Coolmore for US$6,000,000 during the opening session of the Keeneland November Sale on Tuesday.

On a day when eight offerings cracked the seven-figure threshold, Stellar Wind was the standout by open lengths over her competition. Consigned by Lane's End, the multiple Grade One winner had Sadler beaming in the back ring, after watching Coolmore's MV Magnier sign the ticket for one of the best he has ever trained.

"I just came in to kind of finish the circle," said Sadler of his trip to Keeneland specifically

to watch Stellar Wind sell. "Absolutely, it's sad to see her go, but she's going on to her next career so we're happy that she gets to go to the world's best connections.

"I gave her mints this morning, she loves peppermints," he added. "So we're sending her off with a bag of fresh mints."

Bred in Virginia by Keswick Stables & Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings out of the Malibu Moon (A. P. Indy) mare Evening Star, Stellar Wind was purchased privately by Hronis Racing after making her first two starts at Laurel Park. Shifted to Sadler on the West Coast, she campaigned through 14 more starts that saw her race almost exclusively at the top level from 2015 on.

Her first of six Grade One wins came in the 2015 Santa Anita Oaks (Gr 1, 8.5f), the same year she earned Eclipse Award accolades for champion three-year-old filly. While the following season did not yield any year-end hardware, it produced some of the best runs of Stellar Wind's career as she defeated multiple Eclipse Award heroine Beholder (Henny Hughes) in both the 2016 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) and Zenyatta Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f).

Hip 153 Stellar Wind KEENELAND

Page 10: ZACINTO - ANZ Bloodstock News€¦ · IRT North America: Chicago: Tel +1 630 513 0312 Los Angeles: Tel +1 310 306 0262. Flown by IRT. IRT1365 - ANZ Bloodstock News Nov2017_FA.indd

The lacklustre nature of her final career start in the Distaff last Friday was particularly puzzling given that Stellar Wind had won three straight Grade Ones heading into that outing, including a repeat triumph in the Clement L. Hirsch. As she stepped into the Keeneland pavilion and the board jumped from US$500,000 to US$1,000,000 in a handful of seconds, however, it was clear the mare's well-established class and elegant presence was foremost in the minds of bidders.

"She was really a lovely mare to have in the barn," Sadler said. "She's very feminine, very light on her feet, a really beautiful mover, and very correct. I think she checked all the boxes for someone who wants to breed a really top horse."

With the Keeneland bid spotters doing yeoman work, Stellar Wind's price crept up in US$100,000, US$200,000, and US$300,000 jumps en route to equaling Take Charge Brandi (Giant’s Causeway) in 2015 as the second highest-priced broodmare prospect to sell at the November auction. After a brief hesitation at US$5,700,000, Magnier signaled the final bid from the back ring to secure the mare he said will have a date with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) in 2018. Stellar Wind was catalogued as Hip 153.

"She was very good-looking, and she was a champion and was brilliant for most of her life," Magnier said. "Let's hope she can be just as good as a broodmare. We came out here early before the Breeders' Cup looking at a lot of the American Pharoah foals, and they've really impressed us.

"From what we've seen in the sales last night and so far today, the reaction to them has been quite amazing. (After) speaking to all the lads, we are going to send her to American Pharoah."

Stellar Wind's price continued the top-end momentum that has been prevalent in the sales arena, particularly when it comes to obtaining young, beautiful mares. Songbird and Tepin sold for US$9,500,000 and US$8,000,000, respectively, on Monday evening, leaving little doubt that a fellow champion with a pedigree and physical to match would be most sought after.

"Last night was crazy, and to see that definitely made us more confident, for sure," said Bill Farish of Lane's End. "(The price) was

right around where we thought she'd be. It's a lot of money but she's a champion and all the things we all know. The real quality is worth a lot of money these days, and getting into these female families is hard to do."

Stellar Wind retired with 10 wins from 16 starts and US$2,253,200 in earnings.

"Now I go back to California tomorrow and go to work on trying to make the next one," Sadler said.

Bridlewood, Don Alberto join forces on Cathryn SophiaBy Ron Mitchell and Eric Mitchell

Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss), winner of the 2016 Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f), was one of the highlights of the opening session of the Keeneland November sale on Tuesday when she was purchased by John Malone's Bridlewood Farm and Don Alberto for US$2,300,000.

Later, Bridlewood purchased Grade One winner Street Fancy (Street Sense) for US$1,500,000 for its own account, who was catalogued as Hip 158.

Cathryn Sophia, a four-year-old daughter of Street Boss (Street Cry) bred in Maryland by Robert Manfuso and raced by Cash is King, retired with US$1,229,720 in earnings and is in foal to Pioneerof The Nile (Empire Maker). Produced from the unraced Mineshaft (A. P. Indy) mare Sheave, she won six of nine starts and finished third in her other three outings.

SF Bloodstock purchased the filly for US$1,400,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale and then sent her to be mated to Pioneerof the Nile. In the ring early in the session as Hip 30 , the filly was consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock.

"She's an Oaks winner in foal to a nice horse on an early cover (26 February 2017). What's not to like?" said Bridlewood general manager George Isaacs.

Noting that Bridlewood and Don Alberto had partnered on Baffled, purchased for US$3,500,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton November sale, Isaacs said the two entities made good partners.

"We both want to breed nice horses, race nice horses, sell nice horses; like-minded partners, no-brainer business," Isaacs said.

Isaacs, who was an active buyer at the previous day's record Fasig-Tipton sale, said:

| 10 |

Thursday 9 November 2017 | 10 |International sales news

"It's a strong market. If you're going to play on the upper end of the commercial market you will have to pay to get what you're looking for. It think the price (for Cathryn Sophia) was OK in comparison to what I saw at Fasig-Tipton last night. Maybe because it's a little early in the sale we got a little value, I hope."

Of Cathryn Sophia's sale, Doyle remarked: "It was a great result - lovely filly, great race mare. It's been a real pleasure to have her around for the last year. She was just so stunning on the racetrack, and she was really popular here."

Doyle said one difference in Cathryn Sophia's 2017 and 2016 sale prices could be that she is now in foal, and that the market liked the stallion to whom she was bred.

"There are always doubts about broodmare capability and all the rest, and I think people like the mating," Doyle said. "And she's doing well physically. She's really let down into a stunning mare in the year that elapsed."

Doyle said Cathryn Sophia is not a serious cribber, but because he's only seen her display that behavior once or twice it had to be announced by the auctioneer. He also said he did not believe it affected the filly's price.

"She's a really mild cribber and it is one of those you are conflicted about having to announce," Doyle said. "It is so mild. She has never cribbed on a fence outside but once you've seen it you've got to announce it."

Cathryn Sophia was purchased by Charles Zacney for US$30,000 from the Chanceland Farm consignment to the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale.

Street Fancy is a four-year-old daughter of Street Sense (Street Cry) and winner of the Starlet Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f). Out of black-type stakes winner Bold Angel (Cat Thief), Street Fancy is in foal to Darley's top sire Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado).

"She was my top pick," of the mares on his list for the first session, Isaacs said. "A Grade One winner, big and strong, in foal to a top stallion on an early cover - everything I'm looking for in a commercial-type mare."

Conor Doyle of Bedouin Bloodstock was pleased with the sale. Bedouin enjoyed a fantastic day at Keeneland, also consigning US$1,500,000 Her Emmynency (Successful Appeal), purchased by Shadai Farm, who was catalogued as Hip 56.

Newgate Farm, SF Bloodstock Sandblom weanling makes US$775,000

Bedouin Bloodstock were also responsible for the top weanling of the day, who they sold on behalf of Newgate Farm, SF Bloodstock and and Matthew Sandblom.

Catalogued as Hip 105, the weanling filly is by Tapit (Pulpit) and she was purchased for US$775,000 by Baccari Bloodstock for pinhooking purposes.

The daughter of Tapit is out of Grade One winner My Conquestadory (Artie Schiller), who was purchased by Newgate Farm, SF Bloodstock and and Matthew Sandblom for US$1,500,000 at last year’s Keeneland November Sale when the filly was in utero.

Henry Field told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday he was very pleased with the way the weanling sold.

“We were all very happy with the way she sold. I thought she was one of the top-priced weanlings, she is a Tapit filly from a beautiful mare, so it didn’t surprise me when she topped the sale yesterday (Tuesday),” said Field.

My Conquestadory is back in Australia now and has recently been covered by Newgate Farm’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning first season sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon).

“We paid a lot of money for the mare here last year, on behalf of Matthew Sandblom and SF Bloodstock and Newgate also own her in partnership,” said Field.

“She was an incredibly talented high-class two-year-old, and we fell in love with her. We

| 11 |

Thursday 9 November 2017 | 11 |International sales news

thought she was the best filly on the complex that year. Now a big chunk of her has paid off with the sale of the filly and I think she will be a truly great mare for Australia for the next decade and delighted that she’s in foal to Capitalist on an early cover. I’m really excited to see what she will produce.

“I specifically came over to America last year to find mares for our young stallions and with her in particular I had Capitalist in mind when I bought her,” Field continued.

Oscar Party in foal to Tapit brings US$1,900,000By Eric Mitchell and Claire Novak-Crosby of Bloodhorse

Oscar Party, a graded-placed stakes-winning daughter of Dixie Union (Dixieland Band), sold to Jon Clay's Alpha Delta Stables for US$1,900,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale on Tuesday. Agent Reynolds Bell Jr. signed the ticket for the mare, who was consigned as Hip 114 by Taylor Made Sales Agency in foal to leading North American sire Tapit (Pulpit).

The seven-year-old mare is a half-sister to Grade One winner Room Service and Grade There winner Major Gain, who are both by Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo).

"It's been really hard to buy what you want, because everybody seems to want what we want," Bell said of the state of the market. "We're looking for nice mares that have family and have some ability on the racetrack, that are in foal to somebody like this mare (is) in foal to Tapit.

"Mr. Clay likes a nice, physical mare—a mare with a good physical—and he's been trying to get something that is by Dixie Union," Bell said. "That made a difference. Her half sister, Room Service, was quite a good racemare, and she's in production now, so we're excited about what's going on with the family."

Weekend Whim gets Keeneland November off to fast start

The first lot of the day, Weekend Whim (Distorted Humor), the dam of multiple Grade One winner New Money Honey (Medaglia d’Oro) and is in foal again to the Darley shuttler, started the Keeneland November breeding stock sale with a bang on Tuesday, selling for US$1,400,000 to Jane Lyon, owner of Summer Wind Farm.

The 11-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) is a sister to Grade One winner and sire Any Given Saturday and a half-sister to Graded winner/Graded producer Bohemian Lady (Carson City). Cataloged as Hip

1 and consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Weekend Whim hit the seven-figure mark within moments of entering the ring, building on the top-end momentum of Monday’s Fasig-Tipton November auction, which saw 17 mares sell for US$1,000,000 or more.

"She's a producer and my plan this year is to try and buy mares who have produced," Lyon said of Weekend Whim. "This looked like a pretty nice opportunity to start my new program.

"(The price) was a touch more than I wanted but not more than I expected. I'm happy to get her."

While Lyon generally sells her foals, she said she has started "keeping a few fillies, so we'll see what happens." Weekend Whim's Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado) foal in utero is a full sibling to New Money Honey, winner of the 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f) and the Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes (Gr 1, 10f).

"I hoped (her placing at the start of the sale) would be advantageous, but I'm kind of wondering how much of an edge we got," Lyon said. "After last night's sale, things were going

| 12 |

Thursday 9 November 2017 | 12 |International sales news

so high I assumed things would be a little more here too."

Frank Taylor of Taylor Made Sales said his team was concerned when Weekend Whim drew the first hip of the day, but remained confident the buyers wouldn't miss out on obvious quality.

The opening session of the Keeneland November sale on Tuesday saw brisk trade from both domestic and international buyers.

Tuesday was the first of two sessions in the sale's premier Book One catalogue, which features graded stakes-winning fillies, stakes-producing broodmares in foal to prominent sires, and top-quality weanlings. Keeneland sold 96 horses for US$42,304,000, down 15.65 per cent from last year when 115 horses grossed US$50,155,000. The average of US$440,667 rose slightly from last year's US$436,130, and the median rose 15.38 per cent to US$300,000 from US$260,000 in 2016.

Analysis: After showing promise with thirds at his first two starts, the Heath Conners-trained three-year-old Villa Sarchi broke through for his first win here. He was smartly away from his wide barrier (10) and worked in the early stages before crossing to the front. He then set quite a good pace, turned for home with a clear break and then fought back to win well.

R3: Cams Security Mdn Plate, $25000, 1100m.1. KNIGHT COMMANDER (AUS) (b g 4 Master Of Design

Analysis: Knight Commander, a four-year-old gelding from the Darren Weir stable, created a very good impression in winning here on debut, albeit in a field of five. He was slowly away but soon recovered to settle in third place on the rails. He got a split to challenge at the home turn, took the lead halfway down the straight and then raced away to win easily. He raced greenly in stages, should be improved by the experience and looks to have a good future.
