director’s welcome This autumn FAC presents a typically diverse mix of contemporary visual art, live music, art courses, artist talks and for the first time – street theatre.

The incredible Chicks on Speed bring their immersive exhibition SCREAM to FAC as part of a national tour that combines sound, visuals, fashion, objects and music. In contrast, Fremantle Realists presents paintings, prints and drawings by Marcus Beilby, Ken Wadrop and Ray Beattie, with work from their formative days in the late ‘70s to the present day.

Our Artist In Residence program continues to grow as we welcome artists from all over WA, interstate and overseas to our 11 studios at FAC and the Moores Building. With our new large ceramics teaching studio now operating we are pleased to welcome Alana McVeigh as our first resident ceramicist in several years.

In a first for FAC, two exquisite European street theatre shows will be performed in the Front Garden as part of the Fremantle Street Arts Festival. French mime artist Claire Ducreux brings her show The Smile of the Shipwrecked and Belgium’s Studio Eclipse present their spectacular swinging tree ballet Fallen Thoughts.

There is, as usual, plenty to choose from. I trust we will see you soon at Fremantle Arts Centre.

Globetrotting performance, art, music, fashion and new media provocateurs Chicks on Speed roll into FAC this April with a typically genre-defying and mind-bending show. An immersive and interactive exhibition, SCREAM is colourful, noisy, sculptural, cheeky and downright fun. The exhibition invites the public to use iPads within the gallery to compose and mix audiovisual scenes which are projected onto the walls in real time. SCREAM also features the artists' wearable 'Objekt Instruments' and the WA premiere of Golden Gang, a short film starring legendary Australian artist Richard Bell shot earlier this year in and around Kalgoorlie as part of a project with German artist collective M+M.

Over the past 15 years Chicks on Speed’s founding members Melissa Logan (USA) and Alex Murray-Leslie (Australia) have worked between the worlds of music, art and fashion while creating their own brand of gesamtkunstwerk – or 'total work of art'. Having collaborated with luminaries as diverse as Peaches, Karl Largerfeld and Douglas Gordon, the duo are globally renowned for their ability to cross artistic and technological boundaries in their innovative projects.

In addition to SCREAM, Chicks on Speed will launch their latest studio album UTOPIA at FAC on 5 April accompanied by electro drummer Erica Lewis. UTOPIA was created by Murray-Leslie and Logan in collaboration with leading contemporary artists, activists and producers including Julian Assange and Yoko Ono. The launch also involves audience members being invited to participate in the creative process by live-composing and mixing audio-visual scenes via the Chicks on Speed Apps.

Thirty-four years on from their watershed exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA, Fremantle Realists brings together the work of three significant artists who turned their gaze toward the port city and local subject matter.

Ray Beattie, Marcus Beilby and Ken Wadrop operated out of a shared studio in High St, Fremantle, during the late 1970s and were known for looking at WA through the lens of photorealism. This show will feature evocative paintings, prints and drawings of the world as they saw it, including familiar suburban and rural landscapes as well as more introspective, inward looking subject matter.

Their early works formed the 1980 AGWA exhibition High Street Studio Realists which toured to the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria to great acclaim. The artists – all still working today – also exhibited at FAC during their formative years.

Drawing mainly on work from the artists' private collections (including brand new work) this exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the emergence of realism in WA.

Tropaeum, the Latin word for a monument erected to commemorate victory, has over time morphed into our modern word ‘trophy’. This idea and the statement of power implied by trophies is explored by seven Western Australian and one Victorian artist in this thought-provoking exhibition of sculptures.

Through a series of new works, the artists tackle the flamboyant declaration of supremacy implied by these small domestic monuments, undercutting this grandeur with flashes of sly wit and kitsch.

An exhibition developed in concert with the John Curtin College of the Arts Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program, Light and Shade draws upon the Collection to articulate a broad range of conceptual, technical and material approaches to the representation of tone and tonality. Light and Shade will be supported by a program of floortalks for students by City of Fremantle Art Collection curator André Lipscombe.

In The Smile of the Shipwrecked French physical theatre artist Claire Ducreux uses sculpture, dance and comedy in a work that explores solitude of a lone vagabond. Since graduating from the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon, Ducreux has toured Europe extensively to great reviews.

fallen thoughts (belgium)Belgium’s Studio Eclipse will make full use of FAC’s towering plane trees in Fallen Thoughts, a work that sees musicians and performers swinging from the branches in enchanting night and day performances. With the audience encouraged to lie down and watch the action unfold above, this promises to be a truly magical experience.

Local new music ensemble Etica perform three cutting-edge contemporary chamber works in Fremantle Arts Centre’s Inner Courtyard as part of Tura New Music’s Scale Variable series.This outdoor concert will see the WA premiere of James Ledger’s Silver Swans, the world premiere of Chris Tonkin’s Transient States and a reprisal of legendary Australian composer Ross Edwards’ Laikan which debuted at the 1980 Perth Festival.

Ledger’s reputation as one of Australia’s most in-demand composers was cemented in 2013 with the acclaimed national tour of his collaboration with Paul Kelly Conversations with Ghosts. In Silver Swans, the WA composer has drawn inspiration from Orlando Gibbon’s madrigal The Silver Swan and WB Yeats’ poetry in a work that includes both eerie, strange electronic sounds and traditional chamber instrumentation.

Thirty-four years on from its first performance, Ross Edwards’ lively Laikan has lost none of its energy and immediacy. Edwards is known for drawing on the sounds of nature in his music and incorperative ideas of dance and spiritual growth - this is a fantastic opportunity to hear his work under the stars in a truly evocative venue.

Christopher Tonkin is the head of Composition Studies and Music Technology at UWA. In Transient States, featuring WA Opera soprano Jennifer Barrington, he has drawn on pieces of text from female characters in Shakespeare’s plays which in turn drive dramatic changes in instrumentation and style.

artists in residenceThis quarter FAC welcomes a incredibly diverse range of local, national and international artists to our Artists In Residence program. Projects include two local artists constructing and sailing ancient coracle vessels, a Taiwanese artist investigating his displacement from home and the first ceramicist to take up residence in our new ceramics studio. Next time you’re at FAC be sure to visit their studios!

Luke Aleksandrow (WA) will record audio and video on site at FAC to create a series of installations that explore ideas of unheard silence. Aleksandrow welcomes the public into his studio to share their thoughts on these installations. studio 7

Snapcat: Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill (WA) will develop a series of sculpture, drawing, and performance-based projects including building two coracles (ancient one-person boats) which they will attempt to sail from Fremantle. studio 8

Rozalind Drummond (VIC) will work with photography, installation, performance, 1960s counter-culture and video to explore the proposition of fake or ersatz sites. studio 1

Michele Elliot (NSW) will investigate histories of migration, trade and exchange between the Indian city of Kolkata and Perth. Through writing, drawing and mapping Elliot will also explore current issues surrounding borders and immigration in relation to archival material. studio 2

Loren Kronemyer (USA) will reinterpret antiquated anatomy textbooks and instructional wall hangings to create mixed media works which capture the disturbing and visceral complexity of embodiment. studio 5

Zoe Lutze (WA) uses past experiences of print and sculpture as an influence for both material and process. Lutze will pursue the idea of a sculptural print to create a tactile evocative narrative between objects. studio 6 & 9

Melissa McGrath (WA) will continue the development of her self-published curatorial project Black White & Read, while also exploring methods of display for book-based artworks. studio 3

Rose Megirian (WA) will explore fashion theory, communicating her ideas through alternative mediums and challenging themes that inform fashion and its place in society. room 4

Kirsty Sadler (WA) will use lenses, mirrors and light to explore the possibilities of creating immersive ephemeral images and installations. studio 2

Ting Chaong Wen (Taiwan) will be based at FAC until 17 May as part of the Asialink program. Chaong Wen has specific interests in migration, survival and history and will delve into Fremantle’s archaeological and historical archives while reflecting upon the experience of the artist removed from their home. Wen will consider how this ‘migration’ will unbalance art and life, break rules and routines, and seek to translate his findings into a studio installation that evokes a sense of the mobile experience. studio 1

This residency project is the partnership of Asialink, AIR Taipei, Taipei and Fremantle Arts Centre, City of Fremantle.

ALANA McVEIGH (WA) Q&A ceramics studio

This month we welcome ceramicist Alana McVeigh to FAC. Based in FAC’s ceramics studio, McVeigh will undertake research as part of her residency as well as teaching ceramics courses. The FAC site has a long-standing relationship with ceramics which was established during Francis Kotai’s time here in the 1950s. FAC has run ceramics courses since the ‘70s and we continue to welcome absolute beginners and experienced artists into our teaching studios.

Q: Why are you drawn to ceramics?

A: I am primarily drawn to ceramics because it is a medium that has limitless possibilities. It is also a medium that can have many different looks and outcomes.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve or explore during your residency at FAC?

A: Through my PhD research I have been investigating tacit learning, experiential, embodied and sensory knowledge. As a component of this research, I have been working in international artist in residence programs in Canada, China and Europe gathering information and assessing how these aspects of knowledge development manifest in contemporary studio practice. My residency at FAC will provide the opportunity to explore the aspects of tacit, experiential, embodied and sensory knowledge from a position that is located within my own Western Australian environment, culture and history.

Q: You work primarily with porcelain, what is it about porcelain that you respond to?

A: My interest in porcelain, in particular Southern Ice Porcelain, is its qualities of translucency, whiteness, purity and appearance of fragility.

25Under25 is an annual City of Fremantle exhibition that celebrates National Youth Week. Featuring creative media, sculpture and installation, the exhibition provides a glimpse into what the future holds for Perth's visual art scene. Respected local artists and industry professionals will adjudicate the works of the 25 selected young artists exhibiting on the opening night.

26 APRIL – 11 MAY

Experience all the fun of the fair within a circus big top atmosphere. Life as Circus, by Denise Eime and Bernie Lynch, creates a world of childlike reality where the obscure becomes the norm and where the outside seems far away. Part media, part installation, this exhibition includes paintings, prints on century-old organic paper, video, music, hanging structures and papier-mache figurines.

26 APRIL – 11 MAY

An exploration of the nature of memory, Evolving Memory is a multimedia installation created by Cynthia White. It includes ceramic and video work which explores the expression of remembering, of how memories shift and change over time and how they can become more an example of the present rather than the past.

The Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery is a City of Fremantle subsidised art facility that promotes a wide range of contemporary art by providing low-cost gallery and project spaces in Fremantle's historic West End.

17 MAY – 1 JUNE

Salvage/Selvedge features the work of established and emerging textile artists. Using salvaged fabrics, they have created beautiful functional and themed textiles. Visitors will be able to bid for works in a silent auction and are invited to a live auction on 23 May, 6pm. The aim of the project is to raise money for a school in Ethiopia.

7 JUNE – 22 JUNE

This exhibition showcases the work of seven artists who collectively form INTERMIX – a group set up to collaborate, provide feedback and exhibit together. With works on canvas, paper and installation pieces, this exhibition, curated by Mariana Atkins, reveals the diverse styles of Ella Allen, Angela Carter, Ann Land, Maxine Murray, Louise Paul, Elisabeth Ribul and Audrey Tulimeiro Welch.

28 JUNE – 13 JULY

Big Land, Big Sky presents a collection of Jeremy Parnell’s paintings, mixed media and sculptural works inspired by the time he spent living in Nullagine, a remote town in the East Pilbara. The sculptural works explore the impact of human infrastructure and enterprise on the landscape. The mixed media focuses on nature’s patterns and constituents detailing the minutiae of biological and geological matter as well as weather patterns as recorded through science.

28 JUNE – 13 JULY

Karen Morris uses oil painting to explore our response to the built environment, in particular to the architecture of Fremantle. Her exhibition Which Way? looks at how different elements; the buildings, directional signs, traffic lights and road markings define this space and how they contribute to a sense of place for those interacting within it.

It’s been a busy start to the year for RÜFÜS. The Sydney-based group have taken the dance world by storm, entertained crowds at the Falls Festival and Big Day Out and scored three songs in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Their Worlds Within Worlds tour sees them return to Australian shores. Don’t miss this chance to see RÜFÜS before they head to Berlin to start working on their follow up record.

The Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award is Australia’s premier showcase of prints and artists’ books. Now in its 39th year, the Award and exhibition continues to push the boundaries of printmaking while showcasing the best practitioners in the field.
