ABOUT FREMANTLE ARTS CENTREOne of Australia’s finest arts centres, FAC is housed within an iconic heritage building and beautiful grounds. Visit for free exhibitions, an expansive live music program, special events, art courses, a shop selling the finest WA-designed wares and an idyllic cafe. Free wifi. Open 7 days. Please note FAC will be closed for maintenance from 21 July–2 August.

director’s welcome As we head into winter and a new round of exhibitions we invite kids and families to try our new Kids Corner near the Main Gallery where we provide free craft and art activities designed around the themes of each exhibition. Free activities for kids are now an essential part of any modern gallery and we’re excited by how many young artists are using this area.

Returning for the second time, our intimate gigs series Gallery Sessions reveals the extraordinary talents of WA songwriters and musicians. Presented without a PA in our main gallery, this is a rich, intimate experience for audience and artists.

Northern Territory artist Neridah Stockley made her beautiful pictures for her exhibition Stone & Floating Steel last year while she was an Artist In Residence at the Moores Building apartment. The FAC AIR program provides a creative and collegiate environment for those artists making work for our exhibition program and is essential to our mission to be a vital, engaged and outward-looking contemporary arts organisation.

We hope to see you at FAC soon.

Jim Cathcart Director, Fremantle Arts Centre

Fremantle Arts Centre’s WWII Timewindow App and Tour was the winner of the Outstanding Interpretation Project That Enhances A Place category at this year’s WA Heritage Awards.

Stone & Floating Steel is the culmination of a month-long residency at FAC by Alice Springs-based painter Neridah Stockley. During her stay here in 2013 Stockley enjoyed painting outdoors throughout Fremantle, capturing scenes that will be familiar to many locals.

The artist has an interest in port cities and how their evocative imagery becomes stitched into the public's psyche. Convict and colonial markers, architecture, seascapes and urban landscapes were all key points of inquiry while Carnac Island, off Rottnest acted as a visual anchor for Stockley's work during her residency.

Developed from her outdoor studies, Stockley has created a series of vibrant, colour-saturated paintings that contain a tension between representation and abstraction, bringing the studio to the landscape and the landscape into the studio.

Neridah Stockley is represented by Damien Minton Gallery and Raft Artspace

Standing alone in the desert or forest can provoke an awareness of our own 'smallness' and insignificance in the greater world. It is this idea, and the sense that our physical impressions on the ground are lasting records of our existence that is explored in ceramicist Stewart Scambler's Parched: Australia Is A Dry Land.

Scambler is one of FAC's longest serving tutors and a respected artist in his own right. For this exhibition he has pushed the limits of clay work and firing techniques in response to not only larger narratives of identity and land but in recognition of a drying continent as we crowd more and more onto the wet fringes of the landscape.

Structures have a tendency to measure, delineate, regulate and mark bodies. In Boundaries of Beige Marzena Topka uses textiles such as office clothing and string in unusual ways to explore organisational structures and how they work their way into our daily lives. Whether this happens through duty, responsibility and necessity, or through self imposed routines and habits the results are not dissimilar. We are surrounded by regulations, procedures, instructions and guidelines that provide us with codes of behavior and define our lives.

Drawing from her Eastern European upbringing Topka’s works represent how structures take form and yet maintain an inherent fluidity. The artist questions the supposed rigidity of structure creating large-scale textile forms, which by the nature of the material remain malleable.

This exhibition combines installation, film and small-scale sculpture by Topka and includes sound performances by Beige (Adam Burges, Jeremy Cope, Anetta Nevin, Ben Rose and Jerome Turle).

David Attwood and Jurek Wybraniec will create, with some help from their friends, an Emu Export wizard stick that will snake throughout the entire gallery space. Green & Gold is both a monument and a protest - a reflection on an outdated, outmoded icon and a refusal to let go.

The wizard stick is a drinking game, where upon finishing your beer you tape it to the bottom of your next beer. The recent events around Emu Export and its shift from a WA brewed beer and an icon of WA, to a beer now brewed in South Australia is used in Green & Gold as an analogy to address ideas of shifting identities.

As a form, the wizard stick resonates with ideas around masculinity, the phallic and bogan culture; the bigger the stick the bigger the myth, hero, hangover and tragedy. Using Tom Marioni's work The act of drinking beer with friends is the highest form of art as a departure point, this unsusual sculpture is sure to provoke plenty of bar-room conversation.

Did you know that at any one time there are nine local and visiting artists in residence at FAC and the Moores Building developing their practice and making works for exhibition at FAC and other galleries? Many of the studios are open so feel free to pop in and meet the artists.

Tim Woodward (VIC) Exploring the possibilities of coupling voice and objects, Woodward will undertake research in the grounds of FAC to develop ideas for a new outdoor sculpture. studio 1

Rozalind Drummond (VIC) Working with photography, installation, performance and video, Drummond's project explores the proposition of fake or ersatz sites that are neither entirely public, urban or suburban. studio 1

Kirsty Sadler (WA) Using simple lenses, mirrors and light, Sadler will explore the possibilities of creating immersive ephemeral images and installations within the studio. studio 2

Melissa McGrath (WA) Concerned with the book as exhibition space, McGrath will continue the development of her self-published curatorial project Black White & Read. studio 3

Fiona Harman (WA) Taking the motif of the display home as her starting point, Harman will create works that explore real and imagined experiences of suburbia, questioning the ideal of a model home and Australian identity. studio 4

Rose Megirian (WA) Megirian explores fashion theory, communicating her ideas through alternative mediums with the belief that the feeling of being dressed transcends fabric construction. room 4

Jarrad Martyn (WA) Martyn will work on a series of paintings that use found media imagery as a starting point, specifically examples that are marked by a sense of dread in the immediate aftermath of a life-affirming act. studio 5

Holly O’Meehan (WA) Continuing her process driven investigation of organising and arranging, O’Meehan is attempting to gain order and control of objects and images in response to FAC. north wing

Luke Aleksandrow (WA) Aleksandrow will be making audio and video recordings from around FAC’s grounds to create a series of installations that explore ideas of unheard silence. studio 7

Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill (WA) This duo collaboratively known as Snapcat will develop a series of projects using sculpture, drawing and performance. This will include the building of two coracles (ancient one-person boats) to be sailed from Fremantle. studio 8

Lorraine Biggs (TAS) will be returning to WA for a residency on Rottnest Island this month to investigate the life of her great grandfather Robert McGuire (pictured above), a lighthouse keeper on the island in the late 1800s. Biggs seeks to immerse herself in her great grandfather’s history while in residence at FAC and Rottnest.

“My father knew my great grandfather as having an old white beard and a parrot upon his shoulder. He was a Fremantle identity,” Biggs said. “My great grandfather had two sons, Eric and Lesley, who had a wooden boat built in Fremantle and sailed off to the Kimberley on their maiden voyage. The boat was found drifting with nobody aboard... It’s known as the ‘McGuire Mystery’.

“My great grandfather would have seen the voyage as adventurous given his own experiences, having been shipwrecked twice before arriving in Fremantle. I can imagine him in the lighthouse looking out to sea and waiting for their return. That’s something that I want to capture, thinking through his eyes.”

Biggs will undertake a series of drawings of her environment, depicting the landscape and overlaying this with her historical findings.

Lorraine Biggs’ residency is the result of a partnership between the Rottnest Island Authority and Fremantle Arts Centre.
