Welcome toOctober issueOctober sees the advent of autumn and with the nights appearing to draw in, the best of us would be forgiven for wanting to curl up and lament the loss of summer. Welcome to this month’s What’s On and in an issue that covers all aspects of entertainment we’re sure you’ll change your mind when you get stuck into our bumper October edition, so read on to discover what’s hot and what’s not from Bristol’s premier guide to living and working in the south-west.

This month the team is thrilled to launch our beautiful ‘2011 Face of What’s On’ calendar with proceeds going to the Frenchay After-Burn’s Unit. The idea of the calendar evolved after our hugely successful competition to find the face of What’s On earlier in the year, so if you’re looking for a stocking filler with an affordable price tag featuring some of the best locations the area has to offer – you could do worse than buy a copy knowing that it will benefit an awful lot of local people.

Now then, with so much happening as usual, features this month include half term attractions, how to plan for your perfect day – a nod to taking the stress out of weddings and how to get the most out of Christmas. We know that the very thought of the festive season is enough to strike terror in the hearts of grown men, but from now until the end of the year we’ll be guiding you through every step of the way and showing you it needn’t be a painful chore.

Highlights for October must surely be Halloween and with more people than ever choosing to get spooky, make sure you read where the best places are to go ghost busting this month.

With more competitions and special offers than you can shake a broom stick at, this month’s What’s On has got it covered, so remember if you want to know what’s on, when it’s on, why it’s on and where it’s on there can only be one choice – welcome to the October issue of What’s On Bristol, the undisputed people’s choice!

Enjoy!

The great Oscar Wilde once noted “Fashion is what one wears oneself; what

is unfashionable is what other people wear”. having recently returned from a tête-à-tête at Cabot Circus with the radiant gok Wan, who knows a thing or two about sartorial elegance, I have to say that style was very much the name of the game and at the recent Bristol fashion week at Cribbs Causeway. What a whirlwind the last few weeks has been! My dears have some sympathy for poor CW as I’ve manfully battled to reveal the latest drama, gossip and intrigue as it unfolds!

Never let it be said that October is a dull month, for the city is positively sizzling right now with more openings than you could shake a stick at and a plethora of a-listers with our very own Josie of Big Brother fame firmly leading the way.

Before I go on to spill the beans, a nod to a couple of events that took place last month. If you were a silly-billy and chose to ignore the International Kite Festival then you really missed out. Bigger than ever before, this year’s event was a resounding success and a big shout out to avril Baker and her team for a first class job. then came the Bristol half marathon and although I implored my physician to let me take part, I was refused entry on the grounds that my bunions simply couldn’t take the pace. ailments aside, I did cheer loudly from the side lines and have pledged to run it in 2011 – so darlings watch this space to follow my training journal. What

I can tell you is, a famous locally based sportswoman has agreed to mentor me and take me under her wing so watch my progress from here on in.

If we weren’t spoiled enough with the opening of maestro Marco’s new restaurant at Doubletree by hilton, it appears that potty-mouth gordon ramsey has himself been spotted in town. here to film his new tV show, it features the wonderful Casa Mia restaurant in Westbury so I implore you to stay tuned to find out how the family fared – its nail biting stuff.

With renowned brand hooter’s coming to the harbourside this month methinks that the boys in particular will want to pencil it in their diaries, but if not particularly your own cup of tea I suggest you try a couple of eateries have just opened and already causing a bit of a splash. the Mexican Kitchen in Corn Street is serving Mexican food like you would not believe. If you take my advice, you will not put off a visit as this is one of the few opportunities you’ll get in town to taste the real McCoy – good luck amigos! If fajita’s don’t really whet your whistle, a sojourn to Kingswood might be the order of the day with a new Mediterranean eatery called Sugo doing great things. Formerly the site of the old roma restaurant it’s getting quite a name for itself already so good luck to all involved and looking forward to trying it.

Just enough time to let you know about several other openings. Kustom Floors in Bedminster has recently opened its latest showroom in Bedminster and

Cadbury garden Centre will shortly be unveiling a Christmas store in the galleries Broadmead. With the grand Pier just about there, I can tell you that we’re now only days away from its launch. While the wait has been tense at times, CW can faithfully promise you will not be disappointed so be sure you get down there as soon as you can – it’s going to be a blast!

Fearing I’ve spoiled you with so much in-side scoop, I leave you with two more snippets that I’m confident will take your fancy. Firstly, those clever chappies at Puxton Park have unveiled their latest project, a traditional Italian restaurant combined with an Ice Cream parlour. to be built on the site of the old tourist centre overlooking the sea front this is going to be one to watch, so if you want the news as it happens, be sure to tune into your monthly column of whispers and know that you heard it here first.

and so as I lay down my pen, exhausted from the sheer weight of gossip I just need to remind you that if you go down to the caves today… yes darlings, Wookey hole’s brand new purpose built hotel has just opened its doors & having had a sneak preview, I can affirm it’s really rather special. But don’t take my word for it, go and seek for yourself and who said I never give you anything?

Time to Get Moving Week aims to tackle mental health discrimination by bringing people together to get active and have fun. Hundreds of events are taking place all over the country from 9-17 October 2010 and over 80,000 people are expected to be involved in dancing, running and stamping out stigma.

Sue Baker, Director of Time to Change, the campaign behind Time to Get Moving Week said:

“Prejudice lurks in us all and is small and unintentional. Small changes to the way you

act could make a real difference to people you know with mental health problems. You can do something today, such as pledging online to do something to help end mental health prejudice or attend a Time to Get Moving event and help us to show everyone that mental health problems need not be kept in the dark.”

Pledge to end mental health discrimination and find a Time to Get Moving event near you at www.time-to-change.org.uk. Time to Get Moving is part of Time to Change, the anti-stigma campaign for mental health run by Mind and Rethink and funded with £16m from the Big Lottery Fund and £4m from Comic Relief. Time to Change is England’s most ambitious mental health initiative that aims to change people’s attitudes and combat discrimination.

October flags up a couple of important dates in our calendar. A loss of the lighter

evenings, the first half term break of the academic year and the annual celebration designed to bring us out in goose-bumps, the time we celebrate all that’s spooky - namely Halloween!

If there is one abiding image that Halloween conjures up for most of us it’s the carved out orange jack-o-lantern pumpkin, with its ghoulish face lit up by a flickering candle inside.

the original jack-o-lanterns in Ireland and Scotland were usually made out of turnips, and smaller than the pumpkin version that has become the standard Halloween design in America. the great thing about using a pumpkin is that it is easier to carve, and you have so much more scope to design an

impressive face on the side of a pumpkin. Pumpkins come mostly in either grey or orange. It is the orange colour that has become most associated with Halloween.

to prepare your pumpkin, first clean and dry it. cut a small circle around the stem and remove the top. Dig in and remove the seeds and soft flesh from inside the pumpkin, leaving a thick wall of flesh inside the skin. Scrape the inside until you have a firm and fairly smooth surface all round, and a flat base where you will stand a candle - one of those short fat candles are ideal. A large spoon is a good utensil to use inside a pumpkin

You are now ready to carve the face onto the pumpkin. If you have a detailed design, you will find most kitchen knives are less than ideal for getting into all the corners. they

are not designed for carving, and can be downright dangerous – It may seem like over-kill, but head off out to your tool shed and find your electric drill and a keyhole saw. Drill holes to give your keyhole saw a start, and saw around the outlines you have made.

Knock out the pieces when you have cut them out, and trim up the edges, angles, corners and inside of the pumpkin with a knife. Place your candle inside, and you will be ready to enter a jack-o-lantern carving competition with the best of them.

T his month sees the launch of the 2011 ‘Face of Whatson’ calendar, the brainchild of Whatson managing Director, nikki Cook. the idea to produce

a calendar was inspired by the competition held earlier in the year, which saw one lucky girl win a lucrative modelling contract with a London agency.

the competition to find the ‘face of what’s on’ started back in February and saw entries from over 5,000 girls. members of the public were encouraged to vote for their favourite ‘face’ though our specially devised online voting system and from here 120 girls were selected to go through to the semi-finals in June.

Although the judging panel faced a monumental task, they were finally able to select 24 finalists and a lavish finale took place in July at Doubletree by hilton (formally known as Cadbury house hotel).

As 24 became 12 and 12 became 1, the idea to produce a calendar was born. “i knew that the competition had been such a success and created such a buzz locally, i really didn’t want to leave it there so i looked at what we could do that might benefit others and that’s really how the idea of the calendar came about” nikki told us.

photographer Adam marlow in tow and the 12 finalists waiting in the wings it was less the case of ‘if’ but ‘when!’

the calendar has three noteworthy attributes, the first being that it offered 12 local girls the opportunity to experience a professional photo-shoot and for many of them this was a dream come true. it also pays tribute to the southwest with Bristol and the surrounding area resoundingly coming up trumps. Lastly, some proceeds of the calendar will go to the FAB club a, local charity that supports people who have suffered severe burns and with a recommended retail price of £4.95 the calendar is available to buy from the What’s on office and other local retail outlets.

If the mere thought of Christmas strikes terror into your heart and let’s face it with more and more shops

promoting the festive season from September onwards, isn’t it about time that we take a stand and decide just what we want from the most important holiday in the year? Too often we end up stressed or flapping and chances are for many of us it becomes a time of year when we over spend without really knowing why and the adage “Good will to all men” somehow gets lost in translation as the emphasis reverts to “Every man for himself!”

In the second of our countdown guide to Christmas, the What’s On team look at ways to be thrifty yet creative. This year with a bit of careful planning we’ll show you alternative ways to shop that won’t leave you out of pocket but more importantly, keep you in control of your finances – this could be a first for many of us.

Setting a budgetEven before you attempt to go anywhere near the shops, take a long hard look at your finances and work out how much you can realistically afford to spend on presents in total. Then sit down with a pen and paper and make a list of who you’re buying for and a price guide for each person. Make sure you’re fastidious about sticking to your budget because you’d be surprised how just a few pounds here and there can very quickly add up and take you horribly over budget.

buying Second-handYou would be amazed at what you can find in a charity shop these days – they are veritable Aladdin’s caves! Books, clothes, homeware, and music – you just need a bit of time and patience. To find out more it’s worth checking out: www.oxgam.org.uk This year, resolve to buy at least one of your gifts from a charity shop and by making this small

change you’ll be benefiting others less fortunate.

treat children onlyIf you come from a large family – a handful of brothers and sisters and lots of nieces and nephews, Christmas can prove to be an alarmingly expensive time of year. Hard as you think it may be, don’t shy away from telling those you love that you’re on a tight budget. Instead, suggest just buying for the kids this year or alternatively get each family one gift that they can all enjoy together – the latest board game, a luxury box of chocolates or a DVD collection all make excellent choices. for more ideas and suggestions on where to party or what to buy you’ll find lots in this months What’s On.

Next month we’ll look at time saving ways to get the most out of the festive season and more ideas of how to turn yourself in a savvy Santa!

A lveston House Hotel near thornbury has been awarded a silver

accreditation from the Green tourism Business scheme (GtBs) which monitors best environmental practice within the tourism sector.

the award signifies that the independently-owned hotel has “very good” environmental practice and is recognised as a sustainable tourism operation.

“We have long been conscious of our environmental responsibilities as a business and our team has

been working very hard to ensure that we have good practices in place so we are truly delighted to have received this recognition.” Julie commented.

Diary of the Month FASHIONISTAS UNITE TO CELEBRATE

CABOT CIRCUS’ 2ND BIRTHDAY

Over 168,000 people turned up to help Cabot Circus celebrate its second birthday in stunning style over the weekend. The total footfall for Saturday 25 September alone was up 18% year on year (this is compared with last year’s fashion show).

Television presenter and style-guru Gok Wan kicked off the two-day ‘Fashion Weekender’, hosting a series of glittering shows which showed shoppers how to make the most of the latest looks, whatever the taste or budget. Guests were delighted to be given a chance to preview the new collections, with extra inspiration and style advice added by Gok. Celebrations continued into the next day when House of Fraser and Harvey Nichols each held a dedicated catwalk show. Shoppers were united in agreeing that it was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend for serious fashionistas.

James Bailey, Centre Manager said: “We are delighted with the excellent turn out from shoppers who turned up in their droves to help us celebrate our second birthday in style. It was a fantastic weekend thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. It was especially great to see the interest in Cabot Circus has continued to grow two years on.”

Football Club by sponsoring the first team’s latest kit.

The newly opened Marco Pierre White steakhouse and grill at DoubleTree by hilton, Cadbury house has sponsored the team, which holds its training just down the road from the Congresbury eatery, in Yatton.

having just sponsored the Wrington Cricket Club in their cycle ride from Wrington to Lords and having supplied the Clevedon rugby squad with free training sessions, the hotel is renowned in the area for supporting local schools and sports clubs.

T hornbury Castle is a stunning location in anybody’s book made even more so by

the mellow autumn evening’s fading light as we arrived, bathing the castle in sleepy tranquillity. We stopped a moment to admire the hotel’s aston Martin, less historic than the castle but belonging to a bygone era of James bond in his heyday, sleekly parked alongside the reception leaving no doubt that this is a very classy establishment.

Checking in at reception, passing an imposing suit of armour (if you have the impudence to lift the visor you’ll have the shock of finding a face looking back at you!) we went through into the impressive panelled and candlelit room where you can relax with a pre-dinner drink and look forward to choosing from the equally impressive restaurant menu. our evening’s enjoyment went up a notch when we discovered that Mark Veale, a chef who isn’t on television or any of that nonsense because he’s too busy cooking beautiful food, is now head Chef. so, no contest, we took his tasting menu and prepared to be wowed.

We had a table in the delightful hexagonal room in one of the castle’s turrets, the alcoves lit with candles, and the wood panelling

casting a warm chestnut glow, the perfect place to put romance on the menu as well as fine food. We were encouraged by the sommelier to try thornbury Castle’s wine made from its own vines which are over thirty years old. If you have ever had cause to be sniffy about english wine, don’t be, this was crisp and clean with subtle overtones of elderflower and we enjoyed it very much, particularly with the first two courses.

to begin, we had an excellent squash veloute with Parmesan foam served in a shot glass, and from the bread selection (which is all homemade) I had the most delicious salty focaccia bread. to follow, for me ballontine of foie gras and black truffle, almonds, with pickled girolles, gingerbread croutons in coffee reduction and on the other side of the table, duo of roasted red leg partridge and breast of quail, confit thigh, and Parmesan gnocchi, pancetta, with red wine dressing. the foie gras was amongst the best I’ve tasted, smooth and rich, the gingerbread introducing a nice sweetness to the dish. the partridge and quail were a great combination, and the Parmesan gnocchi an inspired addition.

on then to seared orkney scallops, poached native lobster with crab stuffed courgette flower, pea purée and samphire, and a more simple

fillet of wild turbot, beetroot and salad, and red sorrel dressing. My husband retired into a reverie from which I gathered the general gist that everything was marvellous and I was equally delighted with the wild turbot. It’s quite unbelievable that we had resources left to tackle the mouth-watering meat course, but we did and here it is. Duo of herefordshire angus beef (braised feather blade, roasted fillet) crispy bone marrow and truffle layered boulangerie potato with red wine jus, and a “Collection of Downlands lamb” mini shepherds pie, roasted kidney, caramelised sweetbreads, rack, pressed shoulder and neck. both ambitious dishes but truly excellent and complimented by a glass of robust 2005 bordeaux.

to finish, we shared a lemon meringue pie, with limoncello jelly and cardamom yoghurt with lemon sherbet and basil sorbet which proved to be the lightest lemon confection ever, with its tangy and refreshing sorbet the perfect end to a rich meal.

our evening ended with an impromptu tour of the wine cellar, courtesy of the genial sommelier, whose passion is wine in its every incarnation. the cellar was fascinating and we could see how thornbury Castle’s wine list can carry such variety and excellence. If you want something really special thornbury Castle can’t be matched, either for lunch, tea or dinner and especially dinner!

This has to be one of North somerset’s best kept secrets – though not

for much longer. This month the What’s On team salute The Crown inn at Regil: a family-run pub that combines traditional character and charm with some of the best locally-sourced food you’ll have the good fortune to tuck into.

What makes The Crown special is that it manages to offer something for everyone, extending a genuinely warm welcome to village regulars who’ve been coming here for years, as well as newcomers in search of a “real pub” experience. Run by ex Avon and somerset Detective John Newman, it offers an excellent choice of real ales, fine wines and cider, and imaginative but homely lunches and evening meals.

its middle-of-nowhere country location is actually only five minutes from the A38, fifteen minutes from Bristol.

The What’s On team recently dined out at The Crown to celebrate our Managing Director’s birthday, and we weren’t disappointed. The food prepared by locally-renowned French chef Eric Maison was superb, and astonishingly good value (the beef and ale pie was a particular hit).

it’s the kind of crackling-log-fire, cosy hostelry that’s a great favourite for sunday lunches and family nights out, so it’s not surprising to learn that bookings for the Christmas season are already coming in fast. if you’d like to experience some of that traditional festive cheer we’d recommend you make your booking sooner rather than later!

Jacks Brasserie is one of the Harbourside’s tucked away restaurants despite its

waterside location but it is worth hunting out, and making the rather pretty walk along the quayside away from the noisy bars and clubs that dominate the main thoroughfares. We went in a happy party looking for good food and a good time, hopefully to be had by all.

The interior is modern without being stark and the staff pleasant and welcoming. The menu is good with some tempting fish dishes, crisp crab cakes, Devon mussels, poached salmon and a Brixham fish of the day. There was also char-grilled 28 day aged rib-eye steak (which proved very popular amongst the men), oriental duck breast noodle salad and green pea, white onion and Parmesan risotto.i decided to desert my old favourite

risotto for the fish of the day which was sea bass, pan-fried, and my husband took the elderly (in a good way) rib-eye steak and broke the bank by ordering a blue cheese sauce for £1.50 extra. To start he ordered the Devon mussels steamed with garlic, lemon and parsley and i had the chicken, pork and sage terrine with onion chutney and toast.

We ordered the house wine between us all, a good merlot for the red and a sauvignon blanc for the white, and both were excellent, the white served nicely chilled and in a cooler. Our starters were well presented, the mussels although small were very tasty and the bloomer bread served with them was bouncy and crusty as though it had just left the bakers. compliments for the crab fish cakes came from further up the table and i really enjoyed the terrine. Our main courses were up to scratch too, the

rib-eye steak rare as ordered and with a good char-grill flavour even through the sauce and my pan fried seas bass was lovely. The accompanying green beans were a little on the al dente side for us but then we are related to, and learned cooking at the knee of the mother who started boiling her sprouts for christmas dinner in November.

We had a very nice evening and the food for the most part was excellent and if there is a criticism let it be the charges for “extras”, which included the bread, the sauces with the steaks, and a rogue 75p if you had the barefaced cheek to add cheddar cheese or bacon to your burger. Luckily it wasn’t a girl’s night out which can involve much ferreting in handbags for calculators and licking of pencil stubs to work out the fair share!

Dear What’s On BristolI’m writing to complain about the absolute disgrace that we call ‘The Waterfront’ in Bristol city centre. Every weekend we wake up to the news that yet another person has been physically attacked and often in such a violent manner it’s only a matter of time before someone loses their life. I can’t impress how strongly I feel having experienced first hand aggressive behaviour when I’ve been trying to enjoy a night out in the city centre. The Police/Council/Government have got to get stuck in and sort it – CCTV is simply not enough.

Rachael Mills, Cotham, Bristol.

Dear TeamWhat a neat little magazine! My husband and I have been coming to Europe and the United Kingdom for more than 20 years now and although we’re familiar with certain parts of Great Britain we hadn’t visited the city of Bristol before. We recently returned from a three-week tour, which took in previously unseen locations such as Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Wookey Hole Caves and your very own International Balloon Fiesta. I was charmed by your beautiful countryside and completely bowled over by the kindness of your people. Everywhere we went we were greeted with a friendly smile although I gotta say we found the accent a little puzzling at times. Thank you West Country for a great show of hospitality. We hope to return again soon.

Merle and George Greenberg, Chicago, Illinois.

Dear What’s On Bristol, When is your next competition for the ‘Face Of What’s On’? I will be 16 next February and would like to enter it. My cousin entered this year and we got invited to the finals. It was such a great evening and I really want to do it next year if I can.

Lianne Riley, Kingswood, Bristol.

Dear What’s On Bristol,Congratulations to all concerned at ‘What’s On Bristol’ for first breaking the news about the opening of the Marco Pierre White restaurant at Cadbury House in Congesbury. Being a lady of a certain age, I don’t suppose I should confess to having a bit of a teenage crush on the culinary maestro but in reality let me just say that he’s a bit of a bobby-dazzler!

Having recently celebrated a significant birthday I was in seventh heaven when my husband announced that he’d booked a table à deux and although the great man himself wasn’t in attendance the food coupled with the surroundings was out of this world! Although we’re blessed with an abundance of fine eateries in the west, this latest addition is a real jewel in the crown and I cannot urge people enough to try it for themselves. Well done to all concerned and we’ve already re-booked for next month. A fine achievement.

Wendy Peters, Glebe Cottage, Portishead.

LETTER OF THE MONTH REPLYDear Wendy,

It sounds to us like you’re a bit of an avid reader of What’s On Bristol as we’ve been ‘slowly leaking’ the Marco story over the last four months or so with teasers on every issue. We’re so pleased you enjoyed yourself and we’re a little bit envious as we still haven’t had the opportunity to sample the fine food on offer, but we’re confident we won’t have to wait too long. Because as you say, it was a ‘significant’ birthday and by way of compensation for not having met the great man, we’d like to present you with these vouchers and hope you’re able to have a little treat on us.

Wendy wins £50.00 of John Lewis vouchers.

Dear Editor,I would like to draw attention to an article about the charity Rethink you published in last month’s magazine. Living with someone who has been plagued with mental health illness for the last ten years, I know first hand how distressing and debilitating it can be, but I’m also painfully aware that it’s the sort of illness that too frequently gets swept under the carpet. When are we going to wake up and realize that there are so many people with varying degrees of mental health issues struggling and the phrase that often springs to mind is, “there but for the grace of God go I”. With World Mental Health Day just a few weeks away, can we stop to think about an illness that doesn’t attract a lot of supportive publicity but deserves our attention nonetheless.

Lara-Jayne Penny, Bream Close, Avonmouth.

W e had been out visiting of a Sunday morning and on the way home decided

to stop off in Chipping Sodbury for a lunchtime drink on the way home. The Portcullis hotel has undergone a refurbishment and seemed to be thronging with people so we popped in to see what was going on. The interior has been completely modernised with a long sleek wooden bar, and lounges off the main bar, each with Sky TV showing various sports – if you are a football fan, this is the place for you! Wayne Rooney was in evidence so even we as the great untutored in these matters knew this must be an important match, or maybe it was a replay but he was certainly there.

We elbowed our way to the front of the bar to get the beers in and found that it was not the celebrated Mr Rooney’s charms that was packing them in, but the new carvery. For

just £12 for two (less than the price of a couple of sandwiches and a bag of crisps) you can stuff yourself with toast topside of beef, leg of lamb and roast gammon, served with a selection of fresh vegetables and potatoes.

We decided to go into the carvery just to look you understand, and after that it was never in any doubt that we were going to eat lunch. Behind the counter, briskly sharpening a carving knife in a manner worthy of Gordon Ramsey, a charming rosy cheeked waitress talked us through the meats on display which looked lovely, especially the roast gammon glistening with diamond cut crackling and calling out to be eaten.

all the meats are locally sourced and all three joints looked appetisingly succulent.I had the

roast gammon and my husband the topside of beef (so he could indulge in two Yorkshire puddings), topped off with probably far too many glorious roast potatoes and a fair amount of green vegetables just to make it healthy.

There are starters and desserts available that are not included in the £12.00, but if you are on a budget the carvery alone is a great value and perfectly filling Sunday lunch for the whole family.

With the nights now drawing in and the barbeque packed away for at least another seven months we thought you might be in need of some comfort food. This month the What’s On taste testers have devised two chicken recipes that effortlessly combine richness with affordability. With more of us having to watch the pennies, we urge you to try both of these recipes and transform an every day chicken into a real crowd pleaser.

CREAMY CIDER CHICKEN (Serves 4)

2 tablespoons of Olive oil8 chicken portions (I prefer boneless thighs)Salt & freshly ground pepper1 medium onion1 eating apple cored and cut into wedges1 tablespoon of plain fl our225ml (8fl oz) of dry cider150ml (1/4 pt) of chicken stockA few sprigs of fresh thyme1 bay leaf2-3 tablespoons of double cream

(1) In a casserole dish heat one tablespoon of the oil. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and cook through until browned on all sides. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside on a plate.

(2) Drain off the excess fat from the pan, then add the remaining oil and fry the onion until softened. Add the apple and cook for a further 1-2 minutes. Stir in the fl our and cook for a minute. Add the cider and bring to the boil for 1-2 minutes. Add the stock, thyme, bay leaf and chicken.

(3) Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the double cream and season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve on a bed of mashed potato or buttered noodles.

ONE POT CHICKEN AND BACON STEW (Serves 8)

3 tbsp of Olive Oil16 Chicken pieces on the bone (a mixture of thighs and legs)140g/5oz of smoked lardoons4 medium carrots, thickly sliced2 onions roughly chopped2 tbsp plain fl our1 tbsp tomato puree75ml/21/2 fl oz of cider vinegar1-litre/13/4 pints of chicken stock2 bay leaves4 tbsp of double cream or crème fraiche600gr/1lb 5oz of new potatoes12 large white mushrooms quarteredSelection of chopped herbs such as parsley, thyme, tarragon or chives.

Fry the chicken pieces in batches for about 5 minutes on each side or until browned, then transfer to a plate. Sizzle the lardoons in the casserole for a few mins until crisp and add the carrots and onions. Cook for about 5 minutes and stir in the fl our and tomato puree cooking for a further minute. Finally, splash in the cider vinegar and stir well.

(2) Pour in the stock and bring to a nice gentle simmer. Add the cream, bay leaves and seasoning. Slide in the chicken pieces and scatter over the potatoes ensuring that everything is fully coated in the sauce. Put the lid on and place in the oven. After 40 mins, remove from the oven and stir in the mushrooms. Cover again and cook for a further 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and tender. If eating straight away, cool for 10 minutes and garnish with the fresh herbs.

Tell us about Bathroom VillageWe make bathroom dreams come true, offering a fantastic range of bathroom products selected from the very best brands and ranges available today. Everything is displayed in our three showrooms throughout the South West and supported by our website (our showroom prices are exactly the same online). We pride ourselves on the levels of expertise, knowledge and experience offered by staff who do everything from offering advice on accessories to planning and designing a whole new bathroom from start to finish, including delivery and installation; we really are passionate about providing quality that meets our customer’s needs.

A bathroom revamp feels overwhelming. Where do I start?Revamping a bathroom should be simple and fun; we make sure our customers enjoy the experience at every step of the way. A visit to one of our showrooms or the website will fill you full of inspirational ideas; when you’ve established what you want, our designers will work out what will fit in your bathroom (we can either visit your property and measure up for you, or you can supply your own measurement). After the team have assessed available space and water pressure, all you have to do is pick the products that you like. Once the products have been chosen, a member of our fitting team will price

up the installation, and away we go - you’ve had a hassle-free, enjoyable experience!

What if I’ve only got a very limited budget?Go for the shiny stuff! Replace your tired accessories such as mirrors and taps for shiny new ones, and replace the toilet seat. Clean the grouting with a grouting pen, or re-grout and seal where necessary. Replacing the old, worn towels with a fresh selection in white - white always makes a bathroom feel brighter, lighter and cleaner. What’s fashionable in the world of bathrooms right now?Digital controls are the way forward!

I’m recently returned from another foray in to the Benelux countries, including

a five-day sojourn in Germany. I shall entertain/bore you with anecdotes and observations in the coming weeks. It’s been, erm, epic.

For now, however, a few pronouncements on Germany…Autobahn traffic in de-restricted zones seems to have slowed down, in line with the rising cost of fuel, I imagine. German lorry drivers sport comedy facial topiary and appear hell-bent on crushing vulnerable english motorists and their valuable passengers with their 18-wheelers. I hate them. In the provinces of nordrhein Westfalen the mullet is still regarded as the very pinnacle of style. that, or the ponytail, compete with IQ-reducing baseball cap. no man over 25 should wear such an item, as William Hague frequently reminds us.

A challenging conversation I had in the hotel bar of Vornehinternsdorf considered not so much england’s woeful performance in the World cup, but our equally dire scores in the eurovision Song contest, whilst 1970s top Bony m tunes blasted

from the jukebox. yup, they like a larf, our German cousins. Surprisingly, they’ve not embraced the culture of the crew-cab pickup truck with the kind of zeal seen over here.

Back in march 2006 I went on another adventure in the mountains of southern turkey, where a gang of us drove the then all-new mitsubishi l200 range of pickup trucks.

It was one of the most astonishing and challenging drives of my life as these supremely robust and capable 4Wd machines climbed mountains and waded swollen torrents that literally washed bridges away before our very eyes. the l200, in all its guises, became an automotive hero of mine. tough as old boots, well-equipped, handsome and able to see off its rivals. no surprise then that it’s the uK’s best-seller.

I spent the week before my “holiday” driving the new upgraded l200, called the Barbarian. the four cylinder 2.5 litre diesel lump has been refined, rendering it cleaner and meaner. this is a big old hector, with the load-bed stretched by a full seven inches.

that may not sound a lot but we chaps know the real meaning of such measurements.

the range-topping Barbarian comes fully loaded with luxury items and at under £23K seems astonishing value.

As I rumbled hither and yon, looking only mildly intimidating, fresh black silky hairs sprouted from my chest. By the week’s end my torso was triangular and my six-pack rippled.

Prices start at £13,249.

high level insulation and low voltage lights – combine this with recycling pods and the water saving devices fitted as standard and this is eco living at its best!

the new 4 bedroom show home really encapsulates the quality of build and spacious designs Linden homes western prides itself on. set over three storeys, the ground floor comprises a large kitchen, combined living/dining area with access to the rear garden via French doors and a handy cloakroom. On the next level the three generously-sized bedrooms are served by the family bathroom and the Master bedroom is nestled on the third floor with its own balcony and a luxury en suite shower room.

and the location is just as impressive - Market Quarter is just a short walk
