L ifesavers at the beach are often taken for granted. We are often

only vaguely aware of the guys or girls giving us instruc-tions when move out of a designated swimming area, but if tragedy had to strike on the beach, they’d be the first people we would start look-ing for.

Surf lifesaving starts with Nippets, (5-7 year olds) and the feeder group for the Nip-pers who range from 8-13 years. East London is home to a vibrant Nippers group (currently about 70 strong), who besides learning about the sea, get the opportunity to compete in both Eastern Cape as well as the national competition (and earn pro-vincial colours). Although the competitive element is im-portant in the Nipper move-ment, all levels of ability are welcome as there is a strong culture of family participa-tion.

The next step from Nippers is to Junior Lifesavers (ages from 14 to 19 years) and then on to adult lifesavers,

where one can earn national colours. Although lifesaving is not an Olympic sport, many of our top paddlers (and those of Australia’s) have passed through the lifesaving movement.

To qualify for training a swim-ming test in the pool and sea needs to be passed, and candidates should have a thorough understanding of the sea and be provisioned in CPR.

Currently Nipper training takes place at Nahoon Beach on Sunday mornings from 10am, although the group is negotiating the use of Orient Beach for training as sea con-ditions here are better.

Surf Lifesavers are on duty at BCMM beaches from Sep-tember through to April, and their service is voluntary. In order to compete, individuals are required to do lifeguard duties. This is a great skill for youngsters and could be a means of income to a travel-ling young adult.

to be affiliated with Lifesav-ing SA. Once completing training and clocking at least 30 hours voluntary work, the will have to be retested. This includes an interview process and fitness test to ensure the individual is of the highest standard.

BCM lifeguards are on duty at the main East London beaches (Gonubie, Bonza Bay, Nahoon, Eastern Beach and Orient Beach) and at Waterworld throughout the

year from 8.30am to 5pm in the evenings.

During the December pe-riod, more lifeguards are added and they’re on duty from 7am to 6pm.

East London junior and se-nior lifesavers will take part in the 2015 Surf National Competition in Durban from 24-26 April, and the Nippers in Cape Town from 9-11 April. We wish both groups all the best.

and well in East London!

For further info contact Roger Elliott (Nippers) on 073 232 8201 or Travis Smith (Surf Lifesavers) on 083 925 5355. Duncan Boyd (083 763 8723) can be contacted regarding BCM Lifesavers.

Stings from bluebottles and jellyfish can bring a painful end to a day at

the beach – unless you know how to treat them effectively. Bluebottles are more com-mon along the east coast of South Africa when a north-easterly wind is blowing, and are sometimes found along the west coast when a south-easterly wind is blowing. It’s the tentacles of the crea-ture that sting, not the blue bubble – and even the dead ones can harm you, so stay away from them when you’re walking on the beach.

If you get stung1. Carefully remove the ten-

tacles from your skin with a piece of driftwood or shell; don’t use your hands, because you’ll risk being stung again.

2. Looking out for other bluebottles, was the stung area with seawater – but don’t rub the sting, as this

will aggravate it. (the idea that it helps to rub sand onto a bluebottle sting is a myth. Sand will not relieve the pain – it’ll only make it worse)

3. To ease the pain and deactivate the toxins, submerge your skin in very hot water – hot enough to only just tolerate without burning your skin. Whatever you do, don’t use vinegar on a bluebottle sting; this will make it worse.

4. If necessary, seek medical at-tention.

Just Surfing in Epsom Road Stir-ling, sells a product called “All Stings Considered” Cost R20.

Bluebottlestings

Sunscreen application tips:

Use the right amount – Use one teaspoon on each limb, one teaspoon for the front and back of the body, and one teaspoon for your face, neck and ears.

Apply 20 minutes before you go outside – This gives the sunscreen enough time to attach to the top layer of the skin so that it won't be smudged off easily.

Reapply every two hours.
