Fabulous family events across Durham University this Winter

PLEASE NOTE

• Events are drop-in and there is no need to pre-book activities, unless otherwise stated

• Children under 16 MUST be accompanied by an adult

• Activities are generally suitable for children aged 5 – 11 years

• Participation in all activities is included in the usual admission price, unless otherwise stated

• Adults without children are generally discouraged from taking part in family events but may be allowed to do so at the discretion of the event leader should places be available

Durham Archaeology Explorers

Oriental Museum

Children aged 7 - 11 years are invited to join Durham University Museums’ Archaeology Club. The group meets on the first Saturday of the month from 2pm-4pm at the Oriental Museum. Through exciting hands-on experiments and activities, the club investigates all aspects of archaeology and explores Durham’s own archaeological secrets.

Little Dragons

Oriental Museum

Little Dragons’ Club is the Oriental Museum’s group for under 5s, their parents and carers. Come along every Wednesday between 10am-11am for fun crafts, messy play, object handling, stories and role playing.

On the Threshold Following on from November’s installation, this larger exhibition focuses on the work of two Japanese artists both living and working in London. Miyoko Yamashita and Satoshi Nakajima will exhibit a range of works of contemporary art which

juxtapose traditional Japanese aesthetics and Western experiences.

Antarctica: Explorers Heroes Scientists This winter, our exhibitions consider the Polar Regions, focusing particularly on the discovery, exploration and ongoing work taking place in Antarctica.

Somme 1916: From Durham to the Western Front To mark the centenary of the battle, Durham University, in partnership with Durham County Council is staging a major exhibition that will tell the story of this infamous battle through the eyes of local men and women, following their journeys through recruitment and training to active service.

Durham Archaeology Explorers This exhibition explores the work of the Durham Archaeology Explorers who engage with children aged 7-11 years to inspire a lifelong interest in, and respect for, archaeology and the people of the past. The group designed and curated all aspects of the exhibition from choosing objects to writing text labels and designing worksheets.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE VISITOR CENTRE

The World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, on Owengate, Palace Green, enhances the experience of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Visitor Centre provides visitors with an overview of what a World Heritage Site is, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to see and do on the peninsula.

The Visitor Centre also provides a central point of information about places to visit on the World Heritage Site including the Castle and the Cathedral with its Claustral Buildings housing the Treasures of St Cuthbert. The Centre also complements the work of Durham University Palace Green Library on the opposite side of the green.

Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, the Visitor Centre provides interactive experiences for visitors including exhibitions, performances and hands-on family activities.

DURHAM CASTLE GUIDED TOURS

Durham Castle is a unique building with over 900 years of history. Today it is a Grade I Listed Building, an Accredited Museum, part of the World Heritage Site and home to University College, the founding college of Durham University. Enjoy a tour round this unique building and discover some of the history that has put Durham on the map.

Tours during University Terms Tours are normally available every afternoon of the week at 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4.15pm Tours during University Vacations Tours are normally available at 10.15am, 11.15am, 12.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4.15pm. Durham Castle is still a working castle; therefore tours may not run every day if there are other events and activities taking place.
