BRUSHES (BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS):Laurie Speltz stencil brushes, size 1/4" and 5/8", #29001 and #29003

PREPARATION:This surface is made from Masonite and is has a very smooth surface and cut. It will not need much sand-ing. If you prefer, however, lightly sand and use a tack cloth to remove sanding dust. Apply Multi-purpose Sealer to the front, back, and sides of the plaque.

Background:1. Shoreline: Base the front, back, and sides of the

plaque.

2. Transfer the pattern outlines of the bee and fl owers.

3. Warm White: Stipple, then dry brush a few clouds in the sky area around the bee.

Basecoats:1. Summer Squash: Basecoat the entire bee (face

and body) and the center of each fl ower.

2. Light Mocha: Basecoat the wings.

3. Soft Black: Basecoat the black stripes on the bee and the black area around the face. Base the three “hairs” on top of his head.

4. Warm White: Basecoat the eyes.

5. Melon: Basecoat the nose.

6. Carousel Pink: Basecoat the heart.

7. NOTE: To simplify the instructions for basecoat-ing the fl owers, each fl ower has been assigned a number. Please refer to the reduced line drawing to the right for reference.

8. Poodleskirt Pink: Basecoat fl owers 1, 4, and 10.

9. Melon: Basecoat fl owers 2, 5, and 8

10. Lilac Meadow: Basecoat fl owers 3 and 7.

11. Periwinkle: Basecoat fl owers 6 and 9.

12. Foliage Green: Basecoat the leaves.

Bee:1. Summer Squash/Warm White: (Equal mixture)

Stipple, then dry brush, the center of the face and all the yellow stripes. Repeat dry brushing by loading the dirty stipple brush directly into Warm White, then softly dry brush center of face and center of yellow stripes to brighten highlights.

2. Saff ron Yellow/Honey Brown: (Equal mixture) Us-ing the small dots on the Polka Dot Stencil, stencil dots on each of the yellow stripes. Float around each of the yellow stripes; fl oat around bee’s face, above and below the smile line, around nose, and around eyes.

3. Honey Brown: Sheerly fl oat over the Saff ron Yel-low/Honey Brown fl oats to deepen the shading below the smile line, around the nose and eyes, around the face, and on the top and bottom of the stripes.

4. Zinc: Apply the mesh drywall tape to the black stripes on the bee and secure well. Stipple, then dry brush, the center of the Soft Black stripes. Dry brush on the black area surrounding the bee’s face. Double load the dirty brush in Zinc and Warm White and repeat dry brushing over the dry wall tape on the stripes and around the face to brighten

the highlights. Carefully remove the dry wall tape.

5. Lamp (Ebony) Black: Float around each of the black stripes on the bee, and around the black area on the head of the bee.

6. Bright Salmon: Very lightly dry brush a little color along the bottom of the bee’s body, extending col-or over both the yellow and black stripes. Lightly dry brush cheeks on the bee. Dry brush around bottom and sides of nose.

7. Orange Flame: Lightly deepen color in cheeks by dry brushing over them. Dry brush around the bot-tom and sides of the nose. Float bottom and sides of nose; fl oat cheeks above the cheek line.

8. Wild Berry: Again, deepen color in center of cheeks and on bottom and sides of nose by dry brushing with Wild Berry. Sheerly fl oat over the bottom and sides of nose and above the cheek line.

9. Shoreline/Periwinkle: (Equal mixture) Float a very wide fl oat around the pupil area of the eyes. (Note that this fl oat may need to be repeated once or twice to get it wide enough.) Thin with a drop or two of water and fl oat on the white portion of the eye at the top and bottom.

10. Periwinkle/Ultramarine Blue: (Equal mixture) Float the outside edge of the iris, over the Shoreline/Periwinkle fl oating.

11. Soft Black: Using the 18/0 liner brush, thin paint slightly with water and line the “spoke lines” inside the iris. It is usually easier to do this if you start that the pupil and stroke outward towards the edge of the iris. Base the pupil. Line around the iris and the white of the eyes. Stroke eyelashes. Stroke eyebrows. Line around the nose, the “u” shaped lines in the cheeks, and the mouth line. Line around the Bee Kind heart, around the bee’s body.

12. Warm White: Base center of pupils. Stroke high-light strokes across the top of the nose and on the outer edges of the iris’ in the eyes. Dot the top of the cheeks. Stipple, then dry brush, the wings. Thin paint slightly with a drop or two of water and line the irregular stitching lines around the heart.

13. Light Mocha/Honey Brown: (Equal mixture) Dry brush around the bottom of the wings, next to the body. Float over dry brushing, and then around the wings.

14. Soft Black: Thin paint with a drop or two of water. Line around the wings; line the broken line pattern around the inside edges of the wings.

Pink Flowers (Flowers 1, 4, and 10):1. Pink Chiff on: Dry brush the center of each fl ower

petal.

2. Bubblegum Pink: Dry brush the bottom and sides of each petal.

3. Carousel Pink/Bubblegum Pink: (Equal mixture) Float each fl ower petal to shade.

4. Carousel Pink/Wild Berry: (Equal mixture) Float to deepen shading on each petal. Float several veins in each of the fl ower petals.

5. Wild Berry: Thin slightly with water and fl oat sheerly at the base of each petal.

Orange Flowers (Flowers 2, 5, and 8):1. Melon/Warm White: (Equal mixture) Dry brush the

center of each fl ower petal.

2. Bright Salmon: Dry brush the bottom and sides of each petal.

3. Bright Salmon/Orange Flame: (Equal mixture) Float each fl ower petal to shade.

4. Orange Flame: Float to deepen shading on each petal. Repeat to deepen shading. Float several veins in each of the fl ower petals.

Purple Flowers (Flowers 3 and 7):1. Lilac Meadow/Warm White: (Equal mixture) Dry

brush the center of each fl ower petal.

2. Lilac Meadow/Dioxazine Purple: (Equal mixture) Dry brush the bottom and sides of each petal. Float each fl ower petal to shade.

3. Dioxazine Purple: Float to deepen shading on each petal. Repeat to deepen shading. Float several veins in each of the fl ower petals.

Blue Flowers (Flowers 6 and 9):1. Lilac Meadow/Warm White: (Equal mixture) Dry

brush the center of each fl ower petal.

2. Periwinkle/Ultramarine Blue: (Equal mixture) Dry brush the bottom and sides of each petal. Float each fl ower petal to shade.

3. Ultramarine Blue: Thin paint with a drop or two of water. Sheerly fl oat to deepen shading on each petal. Repeat fl oats on the base of each petal to deepen shading. Float several veins in each of the fl ower petals.

Leaves:1. Light Mocha/Foliage Green: (Equal mixture) Dry

brush the center of each leaf.

2. Hauser Medium Green: Float to shade each leaf on the base and sides (excluding the tip), along the center of each vein, and the small veins branching out from the center vein.

3. Forest Green/Hauser Medium Green: (70% Forest Green/30% Hauser Medium Green mixture) Float to shade the base off each leaf.

Flower Centers:1. Light Mocha: Stipple, then dry brush the center of

each fl ower center.

2. Saff ron Yellow/Honey Brown: (Equal mixture) Float around the edges of the fl ower centers.

Final Touches on Flowers:1. Soft Black: Thin paint with a drop or two of water.

Using the 18/0 liner, thinly line around each fl ower petal, leaf, and fl ower centers. With undiluted Soft Black, dot various sized small dots around the edges of the fl ower centers.

2. Warm White: Dot a few various sized small dots around the edges of the fl ower centers, between the Soft Black dots.

Finishing:1. DuraClear Matte Varnish: Apply two coats of var-

nish, allowing to dry well between applications.

2. Cut three strips of fabric, 18” long by 14” wide. Stack the three strips on top of each other. Using the needle and thread, wrap thread tightly around the three strips, about 1/5 inches from one end. Tie off the thread very tightly, and trim excess thread. Braid the three strips together to desired length, then tie off ends of fabric using the needle and thread as was done with the other end before you began braiding. Cut ends of the unbraided portion of the fabric strips into thin strips, approximately ¼” wide. Trim off ends to desired length.

3. Cut two 6” pieces of aluminum wire. From the back of the plaque, thread one end of the wire from the back to the front, bend it over the thread at one end of the braid, and thread the end back through the plaque, from the front to the back. Twist ends of wire together tightly at the back of the plaque and trim as desired. Repeat this pro-cess on with the other end of the braid.
