Shepherd in Scripture

• First mention is in Genesis 29:3• Last mention is in Revelation 7:17• Total the word shepherd appears in the Bible over

100 times!• This does not include other passages such as FEED

MY SHEEP.• Psalm 23• Christ refers to Himself as the Good Shepherd and

Peter refers to Him as the Chief Shepherd.

Two key verses to explore:

Mark 6:34 “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a

shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.”

1 Peter 5:2-3 “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are

willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being

examples to the flock.”

Poor Shepherds1) Tell the sheep what they want to hear2) Don’t know the sheep3) They have selfish ambitions4)Their time is too precious for others5) They view people as objects6) They let sheep walk in sin.7) They can’t be trusted8)They don’t invest in others9) They are focused on building their name.

Good Shepherds1) Feed the sheep the Word2) Know the sheep by name3) They lay down their life for the sheep4) They are available to the sheep5) They love the sheep6) They discipline the sheep7) They are trustworthy8) They mentor others9) They equip others

Practical tips in being a Good Shepherd

1) Find a mentor who will shepherd you!2) Open your life up to others.

a. Spend time talking about the Word.b. Take them on trips with you.c. Have them over for meals.d. Have them live with you.e. Make your contact information available to them.f. BE REAL!!!!!

3) KNOW THEM!a. Invest in them.b. know their struggles.c. Challenge them.d. Develop them.
