Parshah thoughts from The Whitefield Community Kollel

Dovi Colman Presents:

WHY GO TO SLEEP?

Have you ever wondered what the point of sleep is? Why is it that human beings can only function for a certain

amount of time before running out of steam and needing a good shloff? Approximately a third of a person’s life is

spent lying prone in bed, quite unaware of anything that is going on. What a waste of time! Surely, G-d, who

created us and can do anything, could have simply programmed us with the ability to just keep on going without

needing sleep?

Nowadays, there is a huge amount of information available on sleep. Sleeping has become a science (and an art,

if you are a teenager). Traditional Torah sources also have what to say about sleep. The Talmud teaches that

sleep has a minute taste of death in it. This is why upon waking up in the morning, there is a beautiful prayer to be

recited, the modeh ani: “I thank You, everlasting King, for returning my soul to me…” According to Kabbalah, in the

absence of the conscious, the subconscious emerges; the soul’s essential powers are strengthened and more

apparent while one is asleep. The Jewish scholar and doctor Maimonides in his halachic work Mishneh Torah

recommends sleeping for 8 hours a night. Reading from his own description of his hectic daily schedule and

reviewing in awe the tremendous amount of scholarly output that his books and letters represent, one can only

surmise that Rambam, like many doctors, did not himself practice the advice that he gave to others.

Perhaps the clue as to a deeper reason why human beings must sleep is contained in a verse in Tehilim: “In the

evening one lies to sleep crying, and in the morning there is joy” (Psalms 30). Sometimes a person has a bad day.

He wakes up on the wrong side of bed, and everything goes terribly for him that day. He goes to bed with a heavy

heart, depressed, worried and upset about the lost opportunities and the things that went badly for him.

But with his waking up the next morning comes a new day. A brand new opportunity to make things work. Where

he failed yesterday, he now has the chance to put right. Although yesterday was a disaster, today can be a better

day.

This is one reason why G-d created sleep. Human beings make mistakes; there are some days which you just long

for them to come to an end. And sleep ensures that they do come to an end. A person goes to sleep, and when he

wakes up it is a brand new day. In fact, G-d designed the whole structure of time with this benefit in mind. There is

not one long day, week, month and year. Instead, there are smaller units of time. The day comes to an end and

there is a new one tomorrow. The week, month and year all end, enabling us to start afresh, to outline new goals

and aspirations, to have a fresh start unencumbered by the failings of yesterday.

Today is Rosh Chodesh, the first day of the Hebrew month of

Cheshvan. In the special prayers said today, we describe Rosh

Chodesh as a day of atonement. Even though the “real” day of

atonement, Yom Kippur, is only 20 days behind us, here we are given

another fresh start, another opportunity to put our failings behind us

and start again.

Good Shabbos

The Shul and The Forum were at it again last Monday when six of our members embarked on an intrepid 90 mile90 mile90 mile90 mile bike

ride from one side of the country to the other.

Activities began early Sunday morning when Support Van driver, Ronnie Levene drove Dr Robert Levy and Martin Sluck-

is up to Powfoot, Scotland. Later that evening Dani Phillips kindly drove up the remaining riders, Ben First, Ilan Wein-

stein and Mychiel Balshine. The team stayed in the Powfoot Golf Hotel, South West Scotland, where Ronnie, an avid golf

player enjoyed a nice round overlooking the sea.

All was well that Sunday night except for Mychiel who was feeling quite ill. ëAlready on Yom Tov I had felt some illness

brewing, however Iíve spent months preparing for this day, and I would have been gutted if I had to miss it. I came along

anyway in case I felt better on the morning. That night before I

went to bed I had a sincere conversation with G-d and

asked that if not for my sake, please give me the strength and

good health for the sake of the youth work we do in the

community. Amazing the next morning I was a different man,

full of energy and feeling much better – the power of

prayer!

We were up at 6am, davened, had breakfast and got ready. We

were off by 8am, moments after the accompanying picture

was taken with the Solway Firth in the background. We

began all together as a group, leaving the West coast of Britain and heading towards the East Coast, 90 long miles

away. We began slowly as a group, riding along the A75 eastward towards Gretna Green. Ronnie and the van frequently

stopped at turning points to direct us and cheer us on as we passed. A sign saying ëWelcome to Englandí met us after

about an hour and a half and moments later we were greeted by what was to be our first hill. Says something about our

country! We meandered and sped along beautiful country lanes for a couple of hours until around noon when we

reached Hadrianís Wall. This is where things began to get exciting. The ëRoman roadí which follows the Wall is very

exposed to the elements. We were riding into a 20 mile an hour wind which slowed us down significantly. This part of

the ride lasted for a distance of 40 miles and constituted the most difficult part of the ride, especially the 200 metre

climb somewhere in the middle. Once this part was done the difficulty turned to navigating through the unfamiliar terri-

tory of Newcastle upon Tyne. However with much effort and sweat the group made it to their destination, Whitley Bay,

more than 11 hours after the start.

Tired and cold the group enjoyed a nice supper in Gateshead at a new take away called Ariehís Deli. A very kind Rabbi

Katz saw our group and invited us his to home where he set out a welcoming spread to add to our dinner. Dr Robís wife

Francine had driven to Gateshead to help with the return of the cyclists. With her and Ronnieís help we returned to

Manchester shortly before midnight, all to enjoy a nice hot bath ñ Iím sure.

Altogether the riders raised over £5,000 for a number of charities including Youth work in Whitefield, SEED, The Forum

and local Schools.
