It is fairly easy for tourists to make
silly mistakes in London. The city is rather
large and there are tons of things to do.
The best way to not stand out and just
blend in with the locals is by doing what
they do.
Below are the some common
mistakes that tourists make when
frolicking about in merry old London.
Driving, Walking, and Standing on the
Wrong side of the Road
It is quite easy for foreigners to
catch themselves on the wrong side of the
street. Pedestrians should always be wary
of “look right” signs. Observe pedestrian
traffic as well. In addition, there is also
escalator etiquette: stand on the right and
walk on the left side.
Shopping on Oxford or Regent Streets
While they are indeed great places
to shop in, they are not the only ones. In
fact, many tourists make the mistake of
seeking those places out only to find out
that they can find most of the shops
found there at home. In addition, visitors
should be wary of “tourist shirts” that
make them easy targets for pickpockets.
Going to Buckingham Palace (Just to
See the Queen)
The Union Jack sitting high atop the
palace does not necessarily mean that the
entire royal family is in the palace. A good
sign to look out for is if there are more
guards, in their red jackets and rather
larger hats, than usual.
Paying to Go to a Museum
The vast majority of London’s museums are free. This means not having to lay down
a single sterling to take in the cultural richness of merry old London. Visitors and locals
alike enjoy the Tate Modern, Tate Gallery, National Gallery, British Museum, National
Portrait Gallery and many more.
When in London, do as the Londoners do. Tourists who keep these pieces of advice in
mind are more likely to fit in with the locals and are less likely to commit “oopsies” during
their stay in the big city.
