Where do you go from here?
Is ‘yes’ your answer to any of
the following statements?
Periodontal probing is not consistently performed and is rarely documented.
Low production and profit in the hygiene department. Greater than 75% of adult patients are CDT
D1110. A low percentage of patients are on periodontal
maintenance (CDT 4910 is seldom used).
Hygienists do not actively support a periodontal program.
Hygienists perform deep scaling at routine prophylaxis visits and patients are not charged for this service.
• Patients with a ‘bloody prophy’ are not being properly educated about their periodontal disease and homecare or treatment planned accordingly – do you have enough time to do this thoroughly?
• The practice lacks uniform scripts, tools, resources for
patient education regarding periodontal disease. • CDT codes for periodontal disease procedures are used
improperly or not at all. • Risk assessments are rarely, if ever, performed. (Do you
have a periodontal Risk Assessment form?
If you said ‘yes’ to any of the above, then it may be time to reconsider your periodontal standard of care
and implement a periodontal treatment protocol

It takes energy and effort to create a NEW WAY!
CHAOS! You’re on your way!
Some people will want to go back to what is familiar.
The line in the sand! Don’t give in to the temptation to go BACK!
Who on your team is most likely to be resistant to change?
Give them a reason to change!
What do they value? What do they need to know before they will
join with you? How will changing how things are done
impact their job? What is the most motivating thing that
makes you want to change the way you do things?
Motivating elements are different for everyone.
Are you willing to lead the change?
How can you build consensus?
What constitutes being a leader?
Honesty Forward looking/thinking Competent Inspiring Enthusiastic and positive in the
presentation of the new idea.
Building Credibility Modeling the way – if you change the
protocols, you must be absolutely consistent in applying them – each time, every time!
Inspiring a shared vision – be willing to be verbal and reinforce the changes that support the vision Keep the end point alive Communicate it often Allow your passion to be expressed
Challenge the process – be willing to review, replace, reinforce the new way
Enable others to act to support the vision – acknowledge their contribution
Encourage the heart – do the periodontal assessment and treatment for the right reason BECAUSE IT IS THE ETHICAL AND
RIGHT THING TO DO!
