TRANSCRIPT
As we reflect back on 2012, exciting changes combined with new
opportunities can been seen throughout the Nebraska Community
Blood Bank. Visibility has increased in south Lincoln in addition to
the expansion of blood drives offered in the downtown area.
Throughout the year, providing our local communities with a
reliable blood supply remained NCBB’s top priority. To do so, we
continued work with Memorial Blood Centers in Minnesota to
form our new organization - Innovative Blood Resources - and
merge our “best practices”. This partnership allowed our
organization to move forward and add new hospital
customers, including Crete Area Medical Center.
As NCBB continues to advance, we rely on blood donors to provide
stability to our growing community. Through the NCBB High School Scholarship Program, we were
able to recruit a new generation of lifesavers. With many healthy years ahead of them, we hope they
continue to roll up their sleeves for years to come.
Overall, 2012 was a growth year; a time to embrace change and look ahead to our future. We remain
dedicated to our mission of Connecting People ~ Saving Lives. This mission is made possible thanks
to the quiet heroes in our community, volunteer blood donors.
Thank you NCBB supporters. Whether it is through blood donations, financial gifts, gifts in-kind, or
volunteer hours your help has assisted us in turning innovative ideas into lifesaving opportunities.
Sincerely,
Phyllis Ericson, MS, MT(ASCP)SC

New Ways to Save LivesThe saying, “when one door closes, another opens”, rang true in 2012 as NCBB welcomed several
changes at two collection sites.
In early 2012, NCBB made the difficult decision to close the 131 South 13th Street location. After almost
10 years of service to the community, the downtown location drew its final donor and closed its
doors on June 22nd. To fill the void in the downtown area, another door/opportunity opened with
the creation of a new monthly Cornhusker Plaza blood drive. Ensuring convenience for blood donors
including blood drives in downtown Lincoln remains a top priority at NCBB.
In an effort to increase visibility and donor access, NCBB opened a new location at 1631 Pine Lake
Road on May 1st. The location was welcomed with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house.
The opening brought together Lincoln Chamber of Commerce members, NCBB staff and local
NCBB supporters.
A positive change, the new Pine Lake location has seen a significant increase in donor walk-ins
compared to the previous location at 2917 Pine Lake Road.

Overjoyed by the arrival of their son, new parents, Megan and Troy Morton, were in great spirits and
excited about their family’s future. “Owen was perfect and completely healthy, or at least that’s what
we thought,” says Megan.
The morning after Owen was born a nurse noticed bruising on the newborn’s back. An unsettling
discovery, blood was drawn immediately to check his platelet count. The results confirmed everyone’s
fears. Owen’s platelet levels were only at 9,000 - healthy, “normal” levels are around 250,000. With his
blood unable to clot due to low platelets, Owen was experiencing uncontrolled internal hemorrhaging.
“My son was diagnosed with Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia or NAIT disorder,” explains
Megan. “Basically, my platelet type and my husband’s type were incompatible which caused Owen’s
platelets to battle themselves.”
Initially, Owen received platelets from volunteer blood donors to help maintain his levels. “He had
already developed a brain bleed with mild seizures, so without platelet transfusions, he wouldn’t have
survived,” admits Megan.
Ultimately, it was determined that in order to provide
compatible platelets for Owen and reverse the
situation, Megan would have to donate her
own platelets to save her son. Less than 48
hours after delivery, Megan found herself
at the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB).
“As we entered through the doors, the staff’s
positivity was just what we needed to take
some of the stress off of us,” Megan continues.
“Everyone was so helpful in getting us through
the process quickly, especially my phlebotomist,
Angela. She knew I had horrible veins and how
important this ‘stick’ was. She did great!”
Owen’s Story
5
After the donation, NCBB continued to ensure the “special” product was processed quickly. Since time
was of the essence, the NCBB staff worked to fast track the process to save Owen’s life.
Saturday evening, less than 24 hours after Megan’s donation, Owen received his mom’s platelets. This
transfusion did just as doctors had hoped and raised Owen’s platelet levels to 419,000 - a remarkable
number seeing as the newborn’s levels had dropped to just 6,000 prior to the transfusion.
Today, Owen continues to do great and is developing perfectly. His doctors say he should suffer no
long term effects from his rough arrival and that his platelet levels are now stable.
“It makes me tear up to even think about that day, the blood donors who donated to keep Owen
strong and how much everyone at NCBB cared about our family,” concludes Megan.

“I understand it’s not very often you get to meet the families you help but I’m sure they’re all as grateful as we are for what you do every day.”

November 19th through 21st, local media personalities from KFRX
radio and KOLN-KGIN TV, teamed up to give patients a
reason to be thankful by ensuring a stable blood supply
over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The ladies’
team, made up of morning anchors Erika Tallan
(KOLN-KGIN) and Lindsey Nielsen (KFRX), took on
their counterparts, Chad Silber (KOLN-KGIN) and
Matt McKay (KFRX), in a blood donation showdown.
With both teams recruiting donors to NCBB donor
centers and station blood drives, the competition was
strong, generating great publicity for NCBB and the
need for blood. When all the ballots were counted, despite
a strong third day showing by the men, the ladies were
named the challenge winners.
The idea for the Battle of the Broadcasters competition came from Silber, “It just seemed like a good thing to do especially at a time when blood banks are in need of donors.”

Battle of the Broadcasters.
In November, NCBB joined the Innocents Society at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL) for the
first blood drive challenge against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
In conjunction with the Nebraska-Iowa football game, a “Blood Rivals Blood Drive” challenge between
UNL’s Innocents Society and Iowa’s President’s Leadership Society was created. The winner of the
challenge not only earned bragging rights, but also received the honor to fill the Corn Bowl trophy
with corn grown in their state. Over the course of two days, November 15th-16th, blood drives were
held at both UNL and the University of Iowa.
Thanks to terrific recruitment by the Innocents Society, and the giving power of Husker Nation, UNL
won the blood drive challenge collecting 126 units to Iowa’s 45. An overall victory was claimed when
the Huskers also won the football game.
The Corn Bowl trophy is currently on display at UNL until next year’s challenge.

Reaching an Extraordinary LevelIn February 2012, after saving lives for 55 years, George Thompson reached a true milestone and
became a 75 gallon blood donor.
This dedicated blood donor’s donation experience began in 1957 when he responded to a call for
blood donors, due to a serious car accident in the area. At the time, testing was limited to blood typing,
so his donation went directly from himself to the patient.
In 1970, George began to give regularly. A regular donation at that time meant once a year; however,
he stuck with it, giving more frequently as regulations changed.
In April of 1990, George saw first-hand the benefits of his donations.
“My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and I
quickly educated myself on the benefits of giving
another type of donation, platelets,” George
explained. “At that point, I was at four and a
half gallons of whole blood. When I switched to
platelets, I was able to donate more frequently
and my donation numbers kept increasing.”
George now views donating as a way to give back
to his community and finds comfort in knowing
that he’s helped others. He received the Lifetime
Achievement Award in 2005 from Governor Dave
Heineman for 250 platelet donations.
“I was blessed to have a very high platelet count,”
George noted. “That is a gift I don’t intend on wasting.”
While he continues to maintain a regular donation
schedule, he wants to do more and encourages
others to give too.
George, who is a true example of commitment,
has one more goal he’d like to reach. “My next goal
is 100 gallons,” George concluded.
“I know fear of the needle is a big reason why people don’t donate, but it’s so easy. The staff is fantastic. There is no reason to be fearful.”

NCBB gave special recognition to an elite group of volunteer blood donors during the annual
Spirit of Giving dinner.
The April 23rd event featured dinner, an awards ceremony and a blood recipient’s story. Those in
attendance included Lifetime Achievement Club members, platelet donors, and 15 gallon or more
blood donors. Altogether, the group has been
essential in saving hundreds upon thousands
of lives by donating gallons of blood products.
The program’s featured speakers were Erik and
Heather Younger, whose twin sons, Cole and
James, were born nearly three month pre-
mature. During their four month stay in the
NICU, the boys underwent heart and eye
surgeries and received numerous blood
transfusions. “Blood donors played a huge part
in why our sons are here today,” Erik explained.
Spirit of Giving
During the evening, seven donors were also welcomed into the NCBB Lifetime Achievement
Club. Lifetime Achievement members are blood and platelet donors who have donated 25
gallons or more. Overall, there are 85 members of the Lifetime Achievement Club.
New members include:
Kirk Bender
Michael Dennis
Kelly Downing
Richard Egger
James Heinke
Donnabelle Potter

Each summer, NCBB calls all heroes, Hometown Heroes to be exact, to roll up their sleeves and save
lives while earning funds toward the purchase of emergency response equipment and training for
their community’s volunteer fire department.
Hometown Heroes is a blood drive campaign that encourages blood donations during the sum-
mer months, a time when blood collections are often low. Throughout the 2012 summer campaign,
blood donors from 14 communities in southeast Nebraska turned into real
life heroes by hosting a total of 24 blood drives. Overall, 869 units
were collected and 121 blood donors registered to donate
for the first time.
At the campaign conclusion, NCBB awarded funds based
on blood drive collection goals. In total, $5,633 was dis-
tributed among 13 volunteer fire departments.
In Gage County, St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice
hosted two Hometown Heroes blood drives and earned
close to $250 for the Beatrice Fire Department.

Crete Area Medical Center
Beginning July 1st, NCBB became the blood provider for Crete Area Medical Center (CAMC).
As a critical access hospital, CAMC is part of Bryan Health and transfuses 100 units of blood
and platelets annually.
Over the course of 2012, NCBB has provided CAMC with excellent customer service and
technical support.
As the 2012 school year came to a close, NCBB presented several area high schools with a record
amount of scholarship funds through NCBB’s High School Educational Scholarship Program. Scholarship
amounts were based on the success of each high school’s blood drives and are used for continuing
student’s education.
In total, NCBB awarded nearly $30,000 in scholarships to
21 high schools in southeast Nebraska, including Lincoln
Southwest (LSW), who hosted six blood drives – the most
of any participating school. As a result, LSW received
$4,680 in scholarship funds to be awarded to selected
students.
Started in 2004, the NCBB High School Scholarship
Program was created to encourage blood donations
from high school students. “Our continued hope is that
the opportunity to donate in high school will turn
students into lifelong blood donors,” noted Kelly Gillaspie, NCBB’s recruitment director.
Investing in the FutureThe Nebraska Community Blood Bank Scholarship Program
Harley Bair Endowment Fund
In late 2012, NCBB was named one of 11 nonprofit agencies to receive an unexpected gift
from the Harley Bair Endowment Fund. The gift of approximately $10,000 a year will help fund
the NCBB High School Scholarship Fund.
Harley Bair was a generous supporter of the Lincoln community. Over the years, Bair made
several charitable gifts within the community to fund renovation projects and educational
scholarships. After Bair’s passing in 2011, the Harley Bair Endowment Fund was established
to benefit select nonprofit organizations whose causes were close to Bair’s heart.
All contributions to NCBB, small and large, are appreciated and help ensure the community’s
blood supply is strong.
