    There are low-level strolls and higher-level hikes for every age around this picturesque part of the Lakes. Grizedale Forest Park’s paths are perfect for children, with fascinating sculpture trails to hold their interest; while the amazing Go Ape aerial walkway is your chance to Tarzan through the trees. Picture-postcard Tarn Hows towards Coniston is one of the most photographed scenes in the Lake District. Its level, well-maintained footpaths are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and idyllic picnic spots are dotted around the tarn.

    Pop your bike aboard the launch from Bowness Bayto Ferry House. Then cycle off-road along the lakeside bridleway to Wray Castle and return over Claife Heights to Ferry House to pick up the Mountain Goat bus to Hawkshead. Or if you’re feeling energetic, ride all the way to the village. From Hawkshead, the bus will take you to Grizedale Forest Park, where you can sample some adrenalin-charged mountain bike routes and the challenging North Face Trail, as well as family-friendly cycleways too.

    Walk and bus to HilltopCatch the bus up the hill and walk back down the hill on well marked footpaths to Ferry House. Wear suitable footwear and be prepared for rain. A good map is recommended.

    10.40am board the boat from Bowness to Ferry House and connecting bus to Hill Top.

    After visiting the house and gardens follow the footpaths down the hill all the way to Ferry House, visit Claife Station on the way for a view of the lake as enjoyed by the first Lake District tourists.

    Boats back from Ferry House at 1pm, 2.20pm, 3pm, 3.40pm, 4.20pm and until 25th October 5pm.

    After visiting the house and gardens follow the footpaths down the hill all the way to Ferry House, visit Claife Station on the way for a view of the lake as enjoyed by the first Lake District tourists.

    Boats back from Ferry House at 1pm, 2.20pm, 3pm, 3.40pm, 4.20pm and until 25th October 5pm.

    Take the Cross Lakes Experience to Wray Castle, a National Trust property with a difference! Join us on a guided tour of this quirky mock gothic castle, or have fun with the family dressing up and castle building. In the school holidays our rangers will be on hand to help tick off even more of your ‘50 things’ activities or why not have a go at archery? A great family day out whatever the weather.
