MAY 2020 EDITION

SAINT PETER’S PRIDE

Dear Families,

The end of the year is almost around the corner. It does not seem possible that another year has come and almost gone. I do hope your child has not only enjoyed the year, but has grown in many areas. As a school community we took on many instructional components, special events, and initiatives to engage the entire school community in distance learning. I am so proud of everyone’s support, hard work, dedication, and achievements.

Reflecting on this year, I think we can all agree it is certainly one for the books. Together we learned, grew, and shared experiences that will long remain with us in the years to come. The strength of our community and passion to make our school a wonderful place of learning not only for our children, but for us as well has made Saint Peter a special place. Thank you for providing rich, engaging, and well-rounded experiences for your children at home and for knowing that education is about joy, wonder, and fostering curiosity, along with the development of the social skills so needed to succeed. For these, and a million other things, we are truly grateful!

I am truly grateful for all of the Academy family members who are first responders and essential workers. We wish all of our beautiful moms, grandma’s, and aunt’s a very wonderful and Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10th!

P.S. Don’t forget to re-register and apply for financial aid/scholarship!

~ Mrs. Alfeo

www.catholicicing.com/make-and-edible-rosary-fun-for-catholic/

St. Peter Catholic Academy is a co-ed Catholic academy serving three parishes in Brooklyn, New York. Our goal for setting up this page is to raise money for all those who are working with the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an academy and a community, we would like to send food, water and any supplies that they are in need of. We cannot do this alone and would greatly appreciate any donation. This is a very difficult, stressful and scary time, but a small gesture like this can make someone’s day. Please consider giving back to those who are out there giving up much more for our safety. We thank you in advance for your generous donation! May God Bless you and may you stay safe during this time.

One last thing, remember “spread love it’s the Brooklyn way!”

CINCO DE MAYO: DIY PINATA

This is definitely the easiest paper-mache recipe you can make. It is simple, non-toxic, and inexpensive; plus, you only need a few supplies, most of which you probably already have around the house. Grab the kids, and dive in; it’s a fun project, and they will love the messy, goopy texture. Better yet, you will love the easy cleanup.

Supplies Needed:Water • Flour • Bowl • Spoon or whisk

Steps to Make Paper-Mache PasteTo make this paper-mache recipe, you will need one part flour to two parts water. Make as much paste as you need for the project. If you need more, you can quickly mix another batch since no cooking is needed.

1. Pour the flour and water in a large bowl and stir it well. You want the mixture to be thin, with a consisten-cy similar to pancake batter.2. Keep mixing until there are very few lumps left.3. Use a whisk or a hand-held blender to remove any remaining lumps. 4. Add more water or flour as needed, until the mix is runny like white glue, not thick like a paste.

Store this paper-mache paste in a covered bowl or jar in the refrigerator for a few days.

MOTHER’S DAY CRAFTMess Free Painting for Kids. This is a really easy (and as we said, mess free!) activity to create a nice little gift for Mother’s Day.

Here are the steps to make this mess free painting art!

1. First drop a few drops of paint on somecardstock in a large Ziploc bag. You can alsotape down some paper on a high chair like shownbelow. Make sure to use washable paint if you doso that it will easily wash off your high chair! Asalways, supervise your baby during this activity anddo not leave unattended with a bag. Taping the endof the bag will ensure it cannot be opened.

2. Have your toddler press the paint aroundhowever they’d like! Just let them push the paintand mix it together.

3. Once your toddler or baby isdone “painting”, take the page outand scrape off any excess paintthat is too thick or clumpy. Now letyour page dry completely.

4. Find a frame andcut out your paintedpaper to fit theframe.

5. Using anotherpiece of paper orcardstock, write amessage on the topand bottom of yourart or print off from your computer.

6. Now find a heart outline online or use a heartcookie cutter to trace a large heart in the center.Cut the heart out.

7. Place the white paper over your mess freepainted page and voila! Beautiful art you can gift

for any occasion.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION ASSIGNMENT

What does it mean to be a STREAM School? We are always hearing the buzz word STEM. You may already know it is the acronym for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, but what is it about? Well, STEM blends those subjects for 21st Century education. It is a learning style that will prepare students to succeed in the workplace of the future. They will need specific skills to be able to solve problems, find and use evidence, collaborate on projects, and think critically. It is a blended approach using skills taught in those subjects that encourages hands-on experiences and gives students the chance to gain and apply relevant, “real-world” knowledge in the classroom.

At St. Peter Catholic Academy, starting with younger students, we create an environment that encourages observation by asking questions that begin with “Why? or How does?” while on nature walks or exploring how simple classroom machines work, like a stapler. For upper elementary and middle school students, we use project-based learning. Pose problems that students can relate to, and that can be solved in different ways. Students work together and provide evidence of their thinking.

There’s a growing movement to incorporate more arts and humanities subjects into the STEM curriculum. This is why you may also have heard STEAM. The A representing the Arts and Humanities subjects. In Catholic education there is also the acronym STREAM in which we incorporate a Religion component. We encourage the development of creative problem-solving skills, inventive thinking, imaginative design capabilities, and obtaining a more well-rounded skill set to tackle challenges and promote our Catholic identity.

As part of this initiative, this month our teachers will be collaborating to create STREAM projects for our students to participate in during Distance Learning.

Frank & Ashley (2nd grade) and Alexander (K), participating in a gym scavenger hunt around the house. Jackson (2nd grade) drew and wrote about his favorite sport.

Good job!

My mom is so special to me because she has always been the most loving, caring, and kind person I know. Whenever I am sad she always finds a way to brighten up my day. She is always there when I need her. That’s why my mom is so special to me. ~ Anthony Almeida

Through the last 12 years of my life, my mom has always been there for me to help me through the thick and thin. She has always been strong and taught me how to be strong as well. My mom always gives me good advice and always tells me to strive to be the best in everything. She is always there for me when I need help, and always shows me love even if she wants to scream at me. My mom has taught me how to be a great swimmer since I was 5 years old. She is always supportive in my love for sports and makes sure I never miss a game unless I have a good reason to. She is always my biggest cheerleader when I step in the batter’s box or on the pitcher’s mound or when I am in the net in soccer. I will be celebrating my mom and other mothers around the world on May 10. My mom is the best and I will always love her and I know she will always love me back. ~ Jospeh Longo

My mom is super special, it would turn into a 5 paragraph essay If I had to state all the reasons. She is one of those awesome people who love to help others and gains from it; she is super nice and friendly, too. To be honest, I am really close to my mom. We both love reading, cooking and enjoy simple things. Sometimes my mom and I will read together, go on walks or cook/ bake things. We agree on a lot of things when we have conversations or stating our opinions. My mom is also someone I talk to when I need advice, or just someone to vent. I love my mom a lot. ~ Mikayla.
