He combines health traditions of Ayurveda and emerging evidence in integrative approaches to health care. He passionately re-interprets classical Ayurveda to enable its application in the modern west by integrating evidence-based nutrition and life-style medicine. He strongly advocates individual choices in health care and argues for a holistic approach in person-centered health care. He has been researching the use of complementary and alternative medicine through a nationally representative sample of women from Australia and has published papers in international medical journals. Dr Murthy strongly believes that conducing a national survey on Ayurveda in the UK by engaging Ayurvedic practitioners will greatly benefit the identity and promotion of Ayurveda in this country. Where Will Ayurveda Be In Three Generations? Ayurvedic classics declared Ayurveda as eternal; rightfully so, as Ayurveda’s health promotion principles are timeless and relevant to any society when applied appropriately. Despite innumerable international conferences on Ayurveda world wide, except for the same small group of experts, it is a sad truth that Ayurveda is neither widely known to the general public nor is there clear knowledge on ‘when to seek an Ayurvedic practitioner’ and in which health conditions Ayurveda works. A national survey of Ayurvedic practitioners can help articulate the use and role of Ayurveda in the management of chronic illnesses and in health promotion. Without such data it is impossible to influence policymakers or the general public. Our responsibility as Ayurvedic practitioners is to promote health through Ayurveda and to articulate it factually so that Ayurveda gains its credible place in modern health care. The good news is it is possible and even cheaper than conducting or attending international Ayurvedic talk fairs. Dr. Vijayendra Murthy B.Nat (NZ), M.Surgery (Ayu), B. Dr Murthy is a London based Ayurvedic physician with 20 years of experience in clinical practice, teaching and research.
