Which are the World’s Largest Data Centers?

Microsoft’s Quincy Washington Data Center

• Microsoft has competed construction on its new modular “cloud farm” data center in Quincy, Washington. The design of the next-generation facility is driven by Microsoft’s use of data center containers that come packed with up to 2,000 servers. These containers, known as IT-PACs (for pre-assembled components) can be deployed faster and cheaper than traditional raised floor data center space.

• The modular design helped Microsoft complete the initial deployment in Quincy in just eight months. Here’s a closer look at the modular data center technology being deployed in the new Quincy facility.

NJ2 in Weehawken, New Jersy

• Located adjacent to the company’s existing NJ2 data center, the expansion adds 22,000 sellable square feet with a potential additional expansion capacity of 40,000 sellable square feet. The $23 million NJ2X expansion has direct fiber connection between the buildings, allowing clients to host trading applications at several Savvis “liquidity centers.”

• Savvis currently operates 31 data centers around the world, encompassing more than 1.5 million square feet of raised floor space designed to support enterprise IT operations

Tokyo Data Center

• Japan’s Internet backbone. Tokyo facility, which is one of the world’s largest data centers, and also one of the roundest. The building houses more than 1.4 million square feet of space, most of it dedicated to colocation racks, caged suites, and dedicated data center real suites

HDS Yokohama Green Data Center

• Launched in August 2009, the HDS data center in Yokohama operates with 10,000 square meters of total floor space. This green facility incorporates power-efficient data center technology designed to achieve a benchmarking rating of 1.6 PUE

Microsoft’s Chicago Data Center

• The new data center is an unusual hybrid of what Microsoft views as the present and future of data center design, separated by a staircase. The lower level is a vast space with a high ceiling and diagonal parking spaces for double-stacked 40-foot shipping containers filled with up to 2,000 servers. The first phase can hold up to 56 containers, and a second phase (currently shell space) offers identical capacity, giving the Chicago facility a total capacity of 112 containers holding 224,000 servers..

Facebook Data Center

• Facebook’s data centers store more than 40 billion photos, and users upload 40 million new photos each day – about 2,000 photos every second.
