The site is part of the greenway system along the Whipple Creek. Additional greenway extends south to the future Salmon Creek Community Club Neighborhood park. The creek corridor was restored in 2010 to repair the eroded banks. The result is a gentle rock-riffle creek with lots of logs and new native plantings to hold the banks in place. The mature forest and small wetland in the uplands provide a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife as well as spring wildflowers. Did you know? The natural area is in the headwaters Upper Whipple Creek, which is part of the West slope watershed. The West Slope watershed covers 40 square miles. In 2010, the Upper Whipple Creek ranked “poor” for stream health due to high flows and low biologi-cal quality. Restoration projects, like the one on this site, will help protect the watershed for years. New rocks and logs add habitat for a wide range of animals, insects and birds.

See and do Hike 0.5 miles of wood chip trails down to the creek corridor or wander the dirt-surface trails through the wooded uplands. The trails are level to gently sloping throughout the property.

The forest area is a wildlife watcher’s haven, especially if you have binoculars to spy the many species of birds that either visit during migration or call the woods home.

The Whipple Creek is a shallow creek with rocky riffles and shallow pools creating great habitat for wildlife.

The understory areas include many types of small trees, shrubs, ferns and wildflowers, as well as an occasional mushroom. Bring your plant identification books and scout out your favorite.

Pack a snack and and rest on a log at the trail head. The sounds of nature around you offer a peaceful moment just north of the city.

Know when you go The natural area is open from 7 am until dusk. There are no parking fees. The trail access is from the trailhead at NE 22nd Ave. Informal foot trails can be accessed at NE 164th and165th Streets

Stay on the trails to minimize damage to plants. Be aware of roots, loose rocks and other trip hazards.

There are no trash or restroom facilities available on site. Be prepared for your visit.

Pack out all trash and dispose of properly off site. Dogs are allowed, but must remain on leash to minimize damage to habitat. Please pick up all pet waste and properly dispose of off-site.

VisitThe nearest bus stop is near the Salmon Creek Legacy Hospital (C-Tran Route 19). Additional weekday service goes to WSU.
