Blue Belt- Represents our potential and goals. It is a circle that represents unity and oneness. Blue belts were worn by the royal guards (knights) in Korea they were the ultimate warriors for their time. They were the protectors and guardians of the King.

Seven stars – represent the Chil Sung or the ‘Dipper’ constellation which travelers on the path would use to navigate their journeys safely. Just as we use our Martial arts philosophy to navigate our life’s journey. The star represents our lofty goals and reverence for nature they also represent the seven steps to Mastery.

The three red stripes symbolize the trinity. Neh Gong (internal) weh Gong (external) and Shim Gong (Spiritual). Heaven, Earth and Humanity. Three is a very significant number in the Asian philosophy. The stripes total five, symbolizing the Five elements. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. And the five ways of attack.

The hands- The Right hand represents our Soo Bahk Ki heritage, justice, strength the Warrior side. The Left hand represents Defense, friendship, openness, the scholar side. Together the demonstrate balance a Warrior-Scholar.

The Characters- The right character is Moo – Warrior, to not want conflict. The Left is Sa – Scholar and the center is Do traveler of a path. Together the create Moo Sa Do the way of the Warrior-Scholar. The Golden circle represents the ‘inner circle’ or Moo Sa Do. Only entered by embracing Moo Sa Do as a way of life.

Your Uniform (Do Bok)

This side of the Do Bok represents creating the future. The two tone uniform makes it easy for our members to follow visually the instructor. The Chinese characters on the right are Moo Sa “Warrior – Scholar”, the patch on the left over the heart represents our organization and our commitment to it.

The shortened sleeves allow us to practice joint locks and use our protective sparring gear without restriction.

Your Uniform (Do Bok)

This side of the Do Bok represents honoring the past. It is fashioned after the uniform worn byKorean knights hundreds of years ago as seen in this Museum photo.

Your Martial Arts uniform (Do Bok) is very special, It is based on the

uniform worn by the ancient warrior-scholar knights of Korea called the

"Hwa Rang". It is a common misconception that ancient warriors wore

"black belts" in Korea, actually they wore a dark blue trimmed uniform

(see above right photo) the photo above was a Hwa Rang - Do Bok on

exhibit in Korea and it was trimmed in dark indigo blue. That is why we

wear midnight blue instead of black belts. The ‘black belt’ is of Japanese origin not Korean. In Korean culture the

color black represents and ending or death, whereas the color midnight blue (indigo) represents maturity, wisdom

and the color for water which is necessary for life, the polar opposite of what the color black represents. The word

"Do" literally means "way" and "Bok" literally means "clothing" together it means "the clothing of the way". It is

the uniform we wear when practicing Moo Sa Do Kwan™.

The theme for the official Moo Sa Do Kwan™ Uniform is “Honor the Past, Create the Future”™ The left

side of our Dan (midnight blue) do bok is based on the ancient Korean knights uniform, the right side represents

our unique identity as Moo Sa Do Kwan™ practioners. This uniform was created by Kwan Jang Nim Daniel

Segarra after thirty years of martial arts study and practice.

Regarding the original uniform as stated in the ancient military manual the Moo Yei Dobo Tong Ji:

“The infantry soldier wears the combat head cover, the dragon jacket, or the blue, red or yellow nobleman

clothes”

They also wore the white uniform trimmed in Indigo

(Midnight) Blue as discovered in cave paintings, ancient art and

antiques. The modern Moo Sa Do Kwan™ practioner wears a

uniform that honors both those traditions yet takes advantages

of modern technologies.

The original martial arts uniform had not changed in

almost one hundred years, Warriors in ancient times wore a one

size fits all uniform. It would be akin to us wearing a world war

two uniform in modern times. Many uniforms were designed to

be worn under armor, or over other clothes. They had different

needs, materials and manufacturing technologies back then.

The Moo Sa Do Kwan™ uniform is designed to respect and honor our past yet at the same time make it a

valuable training tool. The uniform is two colored so students can easily follow and match positions with their

instructor in class. The sleeve cuff is above the wrists to allow wrist grabs, joint locks, and doesn’t interfere with

Page 6: White Belt Manual Sample 2

sparring gloves, weapons practice etc. It has a more fitting cut than the original one size fits all uniforms and is

made of a modern blend of material for more comfort and breathe-ability. Also it is a one piece top so we don’t

have to constantly tie it and have it get undone. This way we can train longer and harder. It reflects our unique

philosophy perfectly, Honor the Past, Create the Future™

The Do Bok is very special to the Moo Sa Do Kwan™ practitioner as it connects their heritage to the

ancient warriors and is an outward manifestation of their discipline. So the Do Bok should always be clean, fresh,

pressed and in good repair with no other decorations other than those approved by the Warrior Scholar

Association™

Your Do Bok is comprised of three parts:

The Top - called "Sang E"

The Pants - called "Ha E"

The Belt - called the "Dee"

Ranks

In Moo Sa Do there are Five Colors used for the belts and uniforms, each color represents a season in nature and

an element– White for winter, the snow covering the ground symbolizes the hidden potential underneath us all.

Orange – Early spring, Green –Spring time abundant growth, Red – the active Summer time, and Fall harvest

time represented by the Midnight Blue belt.

The belt ranking system reminds us that we are part of nature and that nature moves in cycles. The actual belt

originally had the function of simply keeping ones pants up or uniform closed. Over the years the belts evolved to

signify ones level of centeredness and maturity. Traditionally only solid colored belts were used. Kwan Jang Nim

realized that nothing in nature changes color overnight. There is always a transition between things, so he added

two colored belts to the system. There are eight belts before Blue Belt Midnight Blue: White, White and Orange,

Orange, Orange and Green, Green, Green and Red, Solid Red, and Red and Blue. After these eight belts there are

the Midnight Blue belts representing the five elements: Blue (Water), White stripe (Metal), Gold Stripe (Earth),

Green Stripe (Wood) Red Stripe (Fire). The first eight belts are called Gup ranks. The word Gup means to follow

someone closely, then to arrive. The Blue belt ranks are called Dan meaning level. The first being Cho Dan which

means ‘New beginning level” reminding us we are beginning a new stage in our martial arts journey.

Proper care and handling of your Do Bok (Uniform)

Proper care of your Moo Sa Do Kwan ™ Do Bok demonstrates self respect and is an outward manifestation of

your inner skill and maturity. So your uniform should be cleaned, pressed and in good repair. A sloppy unkempt

uniform is a negative reflection on your inner discipline and self awareness. At times you will we awarded special

patches or be allowed to participate in programs like the leadership team. Only patches awarded to you by your

instructor are allowed on your uniform.
