JPC SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK: 14-19 September This year John Paul College is recognising Social Justice Week at school. Each week leading up to this we will be looking at one of the Catholic Social Justice Principles. As part of our commitment to these principles, and our commitment to upcycling we have decided, in consultation with Whakaora Rotorua, that we would like to ask for donations of clean towels which still have some life left in them. Alongside this if you would like to donate any toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, tooth paste etc , this would be welcomed. These can be dropped at the main office any time from now on. We are also planning a coin trail in week 9 and this is to purchase Christmas presents for young teenagers, who often miss out at this time of year. The Social Justice principle we are looking at in Week 6 is Solidarity. The Catholic social teaching principle of solidarity is about recognising others as our brothers and sisters and actively working for their good. In our connected humanity, we are invited to build relationships - whakawhanaungatanga - to understand what life is like for others who are different from us. Kind regards Veronica Aislabie TIC Caritas E: [email protected]

JPC DAY 2020

JPC Day is finally arriving next week on the 18th September!

For those new to JPC, JPC Day is our special celebration day, where we celebrate our founders and enjoy a bit of fun

together. We begin with a Mass or liturgy to start the day and remember our origins as a Catholic school. Then we all get into costume based on our theme, which for this year is “The 2000s”, where students can dress up as any character

or famous person from the last twenty years. Students will then have a rotation of activities to enjoy (depending on the

alert level we are at) and we will finish off with a concert and talent show.

Because of the uncertainty around Covid-19, we will give final details next week and adapt our program accordingly.

Either way, we will keep with our themed costuming, so start to get your things ready for a fun-filled day organised by

our Year 13 students.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS BIG DAY AT JPC On the 25th September 2020 (last day of term 3) John Paul College is sharing its venue with ten primary school. Senior students from John Paul College will also assist on this day. The event is a Sports and Cultural Exchange for our primary schools in our Catholic School’s cluster. Ten schools in total will be invited to participate. St Marys Primary School Rotorua is the host school. Teams will play in a variety of sports codes in the morning and after lunch the cultural part of the day will begin. This will consist of school representatives competing in Bible readings, an RE quiz, drama skits and speeches.

Rugby has been hit hard with the response to Covid with many games being postponed however the 1st XV has managed to play the last two weekends. The BOPSS 1st Division is extremely close this year. With 2 losses and a draw the 1st XV are in for a mammoth challenge to make the semi-finals needing to win their last 3 games.

Mount Maunganui 1st XV visited JPC two weekends ago, fancying their chances of an upset. A tight first half is the norm as the competition is so close. The Mount took their chances at scoring and knocked over a penalty to get on the board first 3 – 0. They were awarded another penalty soon after which they also converted taking their lead to 6 - 0. JPC have been slow starters this season and this game was no different. Finding their feet they started to dominate play and scored a converted try to take a 7 – 6 halftime lead.

The 2nd half was all JPC scoring another 3 tries. Some great team work assured they closed the game out to take a 24 – 6 lead late in the 2nd half. The Mount were not done as they fought hard all game and earned themselves a consolation try late in the game. 24 – 13 was the final score with good games from Kyle August, Dale Jacobs and Keegan Coomber. Last Friday JPC 1st XV played WHHS 1st XV at local rugby club Kahukura under lights. With a number of players playing their JAB rugby for Kahukura it was an exceptional venue for a local derby. Covid protocols were in place, and a vocal crowd were present to support both teams. It made for a fantastic atmosphere. JPC started the stronger with getting on the board early. An unconverted try to Campbell Haigh through great team play put JPC on the front foot and they were proving to be the dominate team. JPC were unlucky not to score again however when they crossed the line after a charge down they were called back for offside. WHHS came back into the game through JPC mistakes and scored two converted tries to take the lead at half time 14 – 5. The team talk at half time was precise and to the point. The game stepped up in speed and both teams were emptying their tanks. JPC scored two more team tries to Alex Fladgate and Hamish Hawthorne to take the lead 15 – 14 and were again being the dominant team. With 5 minutes left they were taking the game to WHHS. A turnover brought WHHS back on attack and got them in range for a penalty to take the lead 17 – 15. The game was in injury time and the WHHS boys were out on their feet, cramping and trying to use up time. JPC were on attack and went over the line to be ruled to be held up. Another attack took JPC over the line again and after the referee consulted with the linesman the try was awarded, scored by Dale Jacobs, for JPC to take the win 20 – 17. What a game! They were all stand outs and the celebration after the final whistle reflected what winning this local derby meant to the team. Thanks to all those that came along and supported. This win showed the heart and passion of the team is strong. They train 2 mornings and two afternoons per week. They have pot luck dinners every week. They fundraise as a team and do community projects as a team. They have immense support from the JPC rugby community. A quote from an inspired parent, ‘So true Steve, you have developed boys who didn’t stop last night, they didn’t lay down taking a breather when the going got tough, they went hard at it till they won” We will bag those feelings and move onto the last game of the round. Next week they take on Katikati at JPC for a must win game to make the semi-finals. Come along and show your support, Rugby this week …. Reminder: Year 13 Students Now is a good time to set up a personal email account that is separate from your school email address. Come December when you have left School, you will lose access to your school email address - which means that if you have used this to register with outside providers, you will be unable to send and receive information about your future studies. If you set up a new email address now, this can be something you use from now into the future (well after leaving school and even through University). “HANDS ON OTAGO” SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAMME – CURRENT YEAR 11 & 12S APPLY NOW! Hands On Otago is a fantastic week-long opportunity being held 10-15 January 2021 for students to gain hands-on experience on what researchers do and get a taste of University life over the summer holidays. Each summer, Otago hosts around 400 students from schools across New Zealand for this popular programme, where students get to participate in research and experience life on a campus – including staying at a residential college. This opportunity is open to all students, including internationals. Each morning students participate in a Research Project in one University department. There are 30 research projects across our divisions of humanities, business, science and health sciences to choose from. In the afternoons, the students join the “Snack” sessions and have a small taste of a variety of other research activities, introducing participants to the exciting diversity of research and its practical applications. This learning programme is then balanced by a variety of social and recreational activities in the afternoons and evenings. The cost for the week-long programme is $675 (covering accommodation, food, activities, course material, transport to and from Dunedin airport or bus terminal). With many international students unable to return home over the summer break due to border restrictions, this is a wonderful opportunity for international students due to start Year 12 and 13 in 2021 to be part of a week-long research adventure at Otago. Application details are found here. The deadline to apply for Hands On Otago is 27 September.

************************************************************************************ AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB - John Drake Memorial Scholarship. ************************************************************************************ $10K SCHOLARSHIP AND ACCOMMODATION GUARANTEE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO All international students who are currently in New Zealand and who are offered admission for semester 1 2021 to start Bachelor’s studies for the first time at a New Zealand University will receive a Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students valued at NZD $10,000. This scholarship offer also includes a guaranteed place in University accommodation, either in an Otago

residential college or a UniFlat (subject to a satisfactory reference and completing an accommodation application). This scholarship and accommodation guarantee offer is in recognition of the additional challenges international students are facing this year, particularly with international students unable to make a return trip to visit their families back home over the summer, and in support of their decision to stay in the country as they prepare to commence university studies in New Zealand in 2021.

Please note that the residential college applications close on 30 September so Year 13 international students need to

start their Otago admission application now (if they have not already) and to submit an accommodation application now to ensure they keep this option open to them. A confidential reference is required from your school to support the college application – this is also due by 30 September at the latest.

If international students made an application for one of the University of Otago Entrance Scholarships (applications

closed on 15 August), they will also be eligible and considered for those prestigious awards (which have a value of up to $35,000+) and if successful would receive the scholarship of highest value.

Students should go ahead and apply for accommodation now and arrange for the “common confidential reference form” to be completed and submitted by an appropriate staff by 30 September.
