MESSAGES TO STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY Due to JPC having 1200 students, plus a staff of 110, and the constant movement of students throughout the school day with classes and extra-curricular activities, the office staff cannot guarantee messages will reach ‘your’ child/ren within any given time frame. Therefore, it is imperative that all domestic appointments are arranged and organised outside the school day, including pick up times, unless it is an emergency.

Parents and Caregivers are Invited to donate blood at the JPC Annual Blood Drive – no appointments necessary and you will be given priority. The NZ Blood Service will be onsite. Help us make this the biggest donation yet – save up to three lives.

Kia ora tātou from the Counsellors Here is a message from the Year 13 Atawhai Committee: Gumboot Friday It was great to see so many members of our JPC community swap their everyday shoes for a pair of trusty gumboots on Friday 5 April. This is a great way to walk with those kiwi youth struggling with anxiety and depression. Why gumboots? Struggling with depression is like walking through mud. We raised close to $450.00 to go to Mike King’s Foundation to get free counselling for kiwi youth in need. Thank you John Paul College for Gumbooting Up alongside the rest of New Zealand! - From the JPC Atawhai Committee You may recall from the last newsletter that we, as counsellors, will be inviting the wider JPC community to participate in a survey. The purpose of this is to gather your thoughts about various aspects of mental health and well-being for our young people. As parents and whanau of our students, you are the people best placed to comment on the challenges you see that are facing our students, as well as what you think is helpful for them. Our intention is to use the information you provide to plan effective programmes of support for the mental well-being of students at JPC. The survey you will be invited to undertake will be completely anonymous. It is, of course, also completely voluntary, although we would very much appreciate you taking the time to complete it. You will be invited to complete the survey on-line through Google docs. An email with a link to the survey will be sent to you tomorrow. If you have any queries, comments or suggestions regarding the upcoming survey, please do not hesitate to contact us. POPE FRANCIS REFLECTION “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner!” This is a prayer of hope, because I turn to him who can open wide the doors and resolve the problem, and make me look at the horizon, the horizon of hope.

Reflection: When things are not going to plan remember to trust in the mercy of God.

THE 2019 INTAKE FOR THE “YOU MAKE THE CALL” REFEREE COURSE IS NOW OPEN.

10 Level 3 NCEA Credits Now Up For Grabs The course is mostly for year 11-13 students, but also open to year 9-10 students, this course teaches everything a student needs to know in order to referee a 7, 10 and 15 a side game of tackle rugby. Registrations are currently being taken for our April intake. (There is another intake in July in time for Aims Games Rugby 7’s) For more info on the course including dates, times and venues, click here to be taken to the registration page.

This course is for those students who play rugby and would like to do this course with a view of refereeing rugby when they’re not playing. It is not my intention to take your players away from playing, but in fact make them better players by teaching them some law, while thrusting them into a challenging environment where they have to make decisions under pressure, while having a bit if fun. There’s also potential for some of the games these students will ref to earn a little pocket money. (Always a bonus) Pat Rae Referee Manager, Bay of Plenty Rugby Union P: 07 547 4684 M: 029 487 8429 W: www.boprugby.co.nz/referee

NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL WAKA AMA CHAMPS 22 JPC waka ama paddlers competed at the national secondary school champs recently on Lake Tikitapu. We had some great results with Makayla Timoti winning gold in w1 singles, making her the top under 19 female secondary school paddler in the country We also had 2 under 16 w1 finalists (Adrianna Gesztey and Marewa Hudson) and both the boys under 16 crew and the girls under 19 crew made 250m and 500m finals with the girls coming 9th in the top division 250m final only 0.19 seconds behind Rotorua Girls High. With 123 schools and over 1950 paddlers competing it is a fantastic effort to be 9th fastest in the country given the crew had 2 non club paddlers and 2 under 16 paddlers. What is really pleasing as well is that we have a good base of juniors coming through to replace our senior girls like Makayla, Hannah Hope, Maia Berryman-Kamp and Claudia Lepa who have paddled every year for their school since 2015. Thanks to Hei Matau Paddlers for coaching the crews, Annalee and Frank Timoti for assisting with coaching, running the base at the nationals and organising breakfasts, Michele Hudson for being our volunteer at the event and Whaea Mercia as Teacher in charge. Another great campaign this year, waka ama is now an established sport at JPC and our schools efforts are recognised locally and nationally. Stations of the Cross

Why we pray the stations? They Give Us the Certainty of God’s Love for Us

“What has the Cross given to those who have gazed upon it and to those who have touched it? What has the Cross left in each one of us? You see, it gives us a treasure that no one else can give: the certainty of the faithful love which God has for us.” – Pope Francis Address, World Youth Day, Way of the Cross, July 26, 2013

10 Jesus is nailed to the Cross

He has been betrayed, abandoned by his followers, condemned, mocked and tortured. Now the cross, the most hideous form of execution known to the ancient world, the ultimate deterrent reserved for rebellious slaves. The nails pierce flesh and nerve, and he is lifted up in the sight of all: Behold the Man.

Open our hearts, Lord Jesus, to true wisdom, the wisdom of that love revealed in you, that alone gives life: “ the love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things”— the “love that never ends”. In place of the misery of selfishness free us to choose the way of an ever greater love.

12. Jesus dies on the Cross In his hours of agony, of desperate struggle for breath, a great darkness seemed to be gathering over the land. He barely spoke again... some groaning words of prayer and forgiveness. Then a final loud cry: “Father into your hands I commend my spirit”. His head falls forward, and he is dead.

In doing your Fatherʹs will, you poured out your life as one great act of love. Join us to yourself in life and in death. Be our life, our food, our resurrection.

13. Jesus is taken down from the cross It is a poor tortured body that his faithful ones now unfasten from the cross and place in the arms of Mary. The blows, the thorns, the lash, the nails, the spear have all left their mark. As his friends embraced him for the last time, they must have thought of the ancient prophecy: “Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases ... he was wounded for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities...”. As members of your Body throughout the world… we are earthen vessels, make us witnesses to the peace, the healing and the hope you offer to all creation.

14. Jesus is laid in the Tomb The once wonderful radiance of this life is no more. He had made God so real, and brought such joy and hope into the hearts of the hopeless. But it all led to the cross. He is dead now ... and buried. He joins the uncountable millions of those who died before him and those who would die after. He has gone down into the world of death. What now?

Lord Jesus, by your descent into the world of the dead, fill all life, all death, all time with your presence. Be the deepest centre of our lives, so that nothing in all creation will separate us from you: may your love grow within us to cast out all fear, and become a hope that knows no bounds.

GATEWAY The Gateway programme enables senior students to look at careers as they actually are in the workplace, giving an insight into working life. Going out into work experience helps students explore career opportunities and build contacts, along with applying and gaining industry-based skills. Students chosen for Gateway need to be committed to it, following the school rules as applicable outside the classroom. Year 12 or 13 students interested in joining the Gateway Programme, or finding out more about what is involved, should see Rachael Hindrup (the Gateway Coordinator) in the Careers Department.
