    Who needs reformation?

     (A Rebuttal to Tasleema Nasreen’s article)

    On 13th of January an article titled ‘Will gunmen get me too? Ending terror requires that Islam is

    &as #ulished in Times of India' I am res#onding to same'

    ( false theory has een circulated that Islam #romotes )iolence and it fa)ours *illings'

    %o&e)er it is contrary to the actual facts' +ur’an no&here s#ea*s of )iolence or of *illing' It is

    the misinter#retation and misunderstanding of the highest degree to state that +ur’an directs

    uslims to *ill infidels' !he )erses she refers to #ertain to &ar time and can’t e quoted di)orced

    from the historical circumstances &hich &ere the immediate causes for their re)elations -(sae

     "azool.'

    In order to understand +ur’aan &e must ha)e the requisite e/#ertise' "o uslim studies

    +ur’an in isolation and has to de#end u#on the commentaries of the reno&ned scholars for 

    com#rehension' !he +u0ranic )erses are the fountains of *no&ledge and an e/tremely delicate

    and difficult underta*ing for &hich the (raic language alone is not enough ut a mufassir or 

    commentator of the +ur0an must ha)e )ast and dee# *no&ledge of the synta/, etymology,

    rhetoric, and literature of the (raic language, as &ell as, that of #ro#hetic !raditions, sayings of the com#anions, #rinci#les go)erning uris#rudence and e/egesis, doctrinal articles of elief and

    scholastics'

    E)en an (ra has to study the +ur’an from a trained #erson to understand it' !his is &hy

    the nole $om#anions, &hose mother2tongue &as (raic used to s#end long #eriods of time in

    learning the +ur’an from the %oly ro#het' 4mar 5(, s#ent t&el)e years in learning and

    meditating o)er 6urah 7aqara and (dullah in 4mar 5( s#ent eight years to learn it' -+urtui.'

    ( common man has to de#end u#on the commentary of the mufassirs -commentators.and a serious uslim &ho is serious to learn +ur’an has to ma*e an e/hausti)e study of many

    commentaries esides for the understanding +uran one needs to e #ious so that the +u0ranic

    of the +uran, ne)er claim to e its e/#erts and are al&ays eager to learn more, ho& can a #erson,

     y ust reading some translations claim to ha)e understood the )erses of the +uran and then use

    the same to mislead #eo#le' Why are such #eo#le li)ing under such a &rong im#ression that

    they are e/#erts enough to gi)e lectures on +uran'

    !he )erses under reference are not instructions to indi)iduals ut to &ell estalished uslim

    go)ernments #ertaining to &ar time' Islam does not as* you to *ill innocent #eo#le' In fact

    !here are restrictions &ithin &hich &e are required to li)e our li)es' Fes Islam does not allo&

    free mi/ing of men and &omen, there are no #re2marital relations, there is no drin*ing,

    gamling, interest ased an*ing, and Islam does not allo& ta*ing life e/ce#t under #ro#er 

     #rocedure of la&' We do not ha)e un&ed mothers and children &ho are thro&n on streets' !here

    is no unust distriution of &ealth H a &orld &here the &ealth of 1L e/ceeds the &ealth of DDL'

    Ours is not a society &here the children do not *no& as to &hom he &as orn, our elders do not

    die in old age %omes' Our elders do not li)e alone' &e ha)e an un#arallel freedom of s#eech

    &here an old lady as*s the head of the state as to &herefrom he got full dress &hen others could

    not #re#are full dress from the same quantity of cloth they got from 7ait ul al' Our udicial

    system is so uniased fearless that the Judge tells the head of the state -%azrat (li. that he can’t

    acce#t his &itnesses as one &as his son and the other his sla)e e)en though the o##onent in the

    case &as a Je&' 6o much equality that the %ead of the state holds the ro#e of the camel and the

    sla)e is on the camel' We are not allo&ed to moc* at the religious figures of others'

    !hese are our #rinci#les of our Keen' $an any system match this system? !his is our &ay

    of life and &ho dare call it as araric? (re not these #rinci#les the foundations of a ci)ilized

    nation? Is not it a #eaceful system? Is not this the &ay of life that &ould &ithstand the #ressures

    that are ri##ing the &estern nations a#art' !he family, &hich is the asic unit of the ci)ilization,

    is at sta*e in the &est and soon it &ould gi)e &ay to more disintegration' Ko&n the timeline the

    &est &ould cra)e for a ci)ilization ut it &ould al&ays find itself drifting a&ay'

    Who needs the reformation? When you do not *no& and understand the message of Islam ho&

    can you tal* of its reformation? Fou need to understand Islam first, and then gi)e us sermons' It

    is your mind that needs reformation, not the religion of (llah'
