Pk’s Perspectives Christian atheist. What an interesting label…what kind of person
would be called a Christian atheist? I mean, those two words don’t even fit
together. Do they? Is it really possible for someone to earn such a label?
Christian atheist? In my limited thought processes there are some things that
just don’t go together. Like minor surgery. I’m of the opinion that any
surgery is a major deal. Then there are people who refer to something as a
minor miracle. I just can’t go there…if it’s a miracle, it’s a major happening.
I’ve heard people claim they were “scared silly.” Really? I become a lot of
things when I’m scared but silly is not one of them. “Mmmm, that dessert
was awfully good.” Can something be awful and good? “Well this is a fine
mess you’ve got us into.” Again, a fine mess? I could relate to an awful
mess…or maybe an awfully good mess. “Dude, we were having some serious
fun!” If I’m gonna have some fun, I’m thinking I want it to be hilarious fun
or unbelievable fun or crazy fun or even outrageous fun. But to me, serious &
fun don’t fit.
Which brings me back to the Christian atheist issue. Let me give you
a definition for practical, or Christian, atheism. A Christian atheist is defined
as someone who believes in God but lives as if He doesn't exist. Did you
catch that? A Christian atheist is someone who believes in God but lives as if
He doesn’t exist. Is it possible to do that…to believe in something but live as
if it doesn’t exist?
Sure it is. We do it all the time. For example, there are these two
huge asteroids floating around in our cosmos. The largest of the two has been
named Ceres and the other is named Vesta (you can Google it if you don’t
believe me!). The Ceres asteroid is about the size of Texas and Vesta is about
the size of Arizona. We even have pictures of the two asteroids courtesy of
the Hubble Telescope. Now if either of these asteroids were to collide with
planet Earth, the results would be catastrophic. Life as we know it would end.
We’re talking mass extinction, global conflagration and long-term climate
change. Now, the good news is that the Earth's atmosphere shields us from
objects that are initially below about 100 meters in size (which is equal to 109
yards or about the size of a football field) because they break-up and
evaporate before reaching the ground. Still, the famous Tunguska Event in
1908 was a 50 meter (54 yards wide) stony meteor which evaporated about 12
miles above the Earth, and still flattened trees in an 18 mile area. Its yield was
about 10 Megatons of TNT, and the frequency tables predict that such strikes
should happen every 100 years or so.
I believe these asteroids exist and I believe they could wreak havoc on
this earth. But it doesn’t affect the way I live. Not one little bit. I don’t wear
an asteroid protection helmet or prioritize my days in expectation of an
asteroid collision. I believe in the existence of asteroids but I live as if they
don’t exist. I guess when it comes to asteroids, I’m a practical atheist. And
the more I dwell on it, the more convinced I become that our world and our
churches have an ample supply of Christian atheists - men and women who
believe in God but live as if He doesn’t exist. Craig Groeschel says that
Christian atheists have three common traits: 1) they feel personal effort is
better than God’s power, 2) they believe their private life doesn’t affect their
public testimony, and 3) they believe they must please people more than they
please God. I think God has sent a text message to the practical atheists of the
world. You can find it in James 2:19-20: “You believe that there is one God.
You do well. Even the demons believe - and tremble! But do you want to
know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?” cya Sunday, Pk
