Product Overview
Wholesale Optical Connect (WOC) circuits are high performance optical network services, built
on the BT Ireland DWDM/Transmission Systems platform, offering 1Gbit/s and 10Gbit/s point to
point connectivity.
The WOC service offers point to point (PtP) end-to-end connectivity across dedicated circuits and
is highly reliable, with data being carried at high speed directly across the customer’s own
dedicated and secure circuit.

WOC Delivery Options
The Wholesale Optical Connect Service(s) offers three delivery options, based on the SLA /access &
NTE resilience required per WOC circuit.
It is important to note that every offer of resilience is subject to a full site survey and customer site
entrance separacy should not be committed to until results of survey confirm BT Ireland’s capability
& cost to deliver.
Standard customer handoff is Optical Single Mode (1310nm) interface, with the possibility also
available for a customer to use an Optical Multi-Mode (850nm) interface.
Standard (Non-Resilient)
The ‘Standard’ WOC service is provided to Wholesale Clients by BT as:
1. a single BT NTE chassis
2. a single optical fibre pair including single access fibre duct to customer premises (CP) between
the NTE’s at each site.
This Service is often denoted as customer site access 1+0 – or non-resilient PtP service(s).

Figure 2 'Standard' WOC Delivery - WOC in single access 1+0 PtP Topology (CSH)
Customer Site Handover (CSH) Delivery: For 1 & 10Gbit/s deliveries, the same standard BT
deployment / configuration utilises a 2U BT DWDM/Transmission chassis (NTU) at each of the
customer site(s). This provides a standard optical 1Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s Ethernet handover of the
Service (see figure 2).
In Span Interconnect (ISI) Delivery: BT can also deliver to wholesale customers by providing an ISI
delivery of the WOC service as a standard optical 1Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s Ethernet handover in a
mutually agreed ‘Meet-Me’ fibre chamber within 10km of the BT PoP. BT delivers the service on a
fibre pair to the chamber. The OLO /Wholesale customer can then connect their fibres to the BT
pair. This chamber represents the handoff point and the SLA for WOC covers service to this point.
Secure (Diverse Access at Customer Site)
CSH and ISI options are also available for Secure.
A Secure WOC delivery provides one NTE at each site. These use diverse fibre pairs back to the
same BT POP site. Adding a second fibre path/duct from the NTE to the BT POP offers an extra level
of physical (PHY) diversity to guard against potential interruptions to the fibre route. The
customer’s service is built on both paths in a ‘live/live’ configuration enabling failover in the event
of a physical disconnection to either access.
This Service is often denoted as customer site access 1+1 – diverse customer site access.
Figure 3 'Secure' WOC Delivery
Secure+ (Diverse fibres to two different BT PoPs)
CSH and ISI options are also available for Secure +. This configuration is currently only available
in the Dublin Metropolitan area.
With customer site diversity and connectivity to a minimum of two BT PoPs, Secure+ provides
both 1+1 access and Network diversity for the Wholesale Customer. This service is the most
resilient of all three levels.
Maximise the uptime with a higher level of resilience by providing diversely routed fibres to two
different BT PoPs.

Note: The maximum capacity available per NTE is 2 x 1Gbit/s or 1 x 10Gbit/s.
For Secure and Secure+ configurations, the customer is responsible for configuring the ‘switch-
over’ of their traffic between each 1/10Gbit/s circuit to enable the traffic diversity/resilience on
the BT diverse paths.

Ordering and Service Delivery
Orders will be submitted through your BT Account Manager using a BT Wholesale Optical
Connect Order Form.
In order for BT to accept and progress orders, customers must provide all relevant information;
customer details, site location(s), resilience and bandwidth requirements including any existing
circuit IDs. Failure to provide all relevant information will delay delivery of the service.
Service Delivery Plan
Delivery of your BT Wholesale Optical Connect service will be managed in stages, these are
illustrated below.
Delivery will be managed by a BT Project Co-ordinator who will provide you with regular
communications on the progress of your orders throughout the various stages.
Figure 5 Service Delivery Plan
Delivery Lead Times
The indicative lead-times for services of this type, where sites are On-Net, with capacity, is 3-6 weeks. If non-standard (i.e. construction required or access to be delivered via a 3rd party access provider) then lead-time will be provided on a case by case basis. In some cases, while there may be BT / Other Licensed Operator (OLO) fibre into the required building, this may be customer specific. Therein, fibre works (Planned Engineering Work) or a new fibre may be required to provide Wholesale Optical Connect services.
BT Network Termination Equipment (BT NTE) & Physical Interfaces
BT Wholesale Optical Connect is an uncontended ‘clear-circuit’, high speed and low latency service, terminated with a BT NTE acting as a service demarcation device.
BT Network Terminating Equipment (BT NTE)
The Huawei OptiX OSN 1800 II is the BT approved NTE (Network Terminating Equipment) device for use in terminating BT Wholesale Optical Connect services. It is used to transport full-rate 1Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s services. This device is also available to supply high bandwidth services such as FC200, FC400 and FC800. The OSN 1800 series are equipped with components providing lower power consumption which greatly assist in reducing operational expenditure. With dual power supplies and options for line and client service protection, customers can easily meet the requirements of a highly reliable network. The BT NTE provides dedicated 1Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s point-to-point connectivity, with the standard customer handoff interface of optical single mode (1310nm). Optical multi-mode interface (850nm) is also available, upon request.

Customer Space, Power and Cabling Responsibilities
The Customer shall be responsible for providing power to and provisioning space for all network equipment. This is the case whether the service resides at the Customer Site or at Customer contracted third party sites (including datacentres from BT and/or alternate providers or other third party contracted locations).
BT recommends an allocation of 7U rack-space in one block within the same cabinet, to facilitate the BT NTE and any other equipment required to support the service. BT recommends that the rack is earthed. The demarcation point will be to an Optical Distribution Frame (ODF) / patch panel, specification as follows: 24 Port Panel – 2 * LC SM DX Keystone Couplers & 2 * RJ-45 Cat 6 Keystone Couplers, 20 * Ports Blanked Off.
The BT NTE comes fitted with Dual Power Supply Units delivered as standard. To take full advantage of both PSUs customers are recommended to present power-feed from two separate trip-switches. It should be noted that the BT NTE can be AC or DC powered as required by the customer. The DC version operates at a nominal -48V DC, requiring 150W to be available.
Stand-by Power (Battery Back-Up) is not available for Wholesale Optical Connect - the customer can use their own UPS if desired.
It should also be noted that where the customer requires the BT NTE and the ODF to be located
in different locations within a building, it is the customer responsibility to provide the cabling
between the locations. This applies to BT customers and to end-user customers.
For service provisions that reside at a customer contracted third party site (including data-
centres from BT and/or alternate providers or other third party contracted locations), BT will
deliver to the agreed demarcation. The responsibility for the provisioning of cabling thereafter is
under the respective site-owner’s remit.
Customers should take particular care to advise BT of specific diverse cabling requirements.
