I spend a lot of time in our magnificent sanctuary! Its grandeur is never lost on me and it is one of my joys to watch the faces of visitors entering it for the first time! I am often asked by these same visitors to explain the significance of our bima, which includes the golden ark, the rings, the poles, the cherubim,
and the lampstands (menorahs). I delight in explaining to them that back in 1929, Rabbi Marx and architect Phillip Shutze, took their inspiration directly from the Torah portion, Terumah (Exodus 25), which details the construction of the bima. Contained within the Torah portion are the words Vay-yi-ku-li t’ru-mah mei-eit kol ish asher yid-veh-nu li-bo, “Bring to Me gifts from every person whose heart is so moved”. You might already be familiar with those words, as they are displayed in large Hebrew letters near Schwartz-Goldstein Hall, honoring all those who gave of their hearts to create and sustain our 2004 renovation.
As we move into 2020, I would like to call to your attention other gifts to our congregation from persons whose hearts have moved them. On Sunday, March 15th at 4pm in our sanctuary, The Temple will be the host for the final performance of the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival. This performance of Annelies: The Diary of Anne Frank, composed by James Whitbourn, and performed by the Clark University Philharmonic Society, brings to life the diary written by Annelies (Anne) Frank between 1942 and 1944 when she and her family hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse. Clark Atlanta’s musical director, Dr. Curtis Powell, brought this program to us on a cold and rainy evening last November, to commemorate the 90th birthday of Anne Frank and the 75th anniversary of her last diary entry. Although attendance was small that evening, the imprint that the performance left on the audience was huge. It was one of the most exquisite performances I have ever seen and I marveled at the gifts bestowed upon our congregation by such talented students and faculty. To hear Anne Frank’s words sung with so much heart by the young people from Clark University was moving and powerful. In the words of Dr. Powell, “It is our goal, to uncover how this music doesn’t just represent her experiences, but what they epitomize; a universal tale of spiritual strength and the triumph of the human soul over its physical surroundings. We hope that the audience will, through this music, connect and engage the heart of the human experience with a story of the triumph of the human heart over evil.” I strongly encourage you to join us for the encore performance of this unique and compelling musical experience!
Moving now from the sanctuary to the hallway off our main lobby, you may have noticed the addition of some exquisite artwork entitled, The Twelve Tribes of Israel, by Atlanta visual artist, Lynette Joel. The art was originally lent to us to display during the June 2019 American Conference of Cantors Convention dinner, hosted by The Temple. Each piece represents one of the twelve sons of Jacob, from the oldest Reuben, down to the youngest, Benjamin. Collectively, they are bursting with color and robust shapes, with each piece telling a story rich in narrative and symbolism. Soon after the convention had ended, and with overflowing generosity of spirit, Lynette graciously offered to permanently donate them to The Temple. In addition to adding color, light, and energy to our hallway, her gift continues to inspire and teach every time we walk by and note their unique and beautiful presence!
The final gift that I want to call your attention to now makes its home in our Covenant chapel. We are the very fortunate recipients of a Steinway baby grand piano, given to us by Lynne and Howard Halpern. Their kindness, generosity, and love of The Temple shines through with every note that is played and every melody that is sung! In addition to being a remarkable accompanying instrument, their gift will enable The Temple to host a vast array of chamber concerts and performances to be appreciated by countless music lovers for years to come! This gift of their hearts now joins with another such gift, our Boston baby grand Sanctuary piano, given by Sig (of blessed memory) and Billie Guthman in 2008. Sig was a devoted member of The Temple Singers and his strong voice and spirit resonate to this day!
How blessed we are for these gifts of spirit and soul. They have enriched us beyond measure and will continue to do so for generations yet to come.
Gifts of Spirit & Soul

TAMID Programming CalendarAtlanta’s Jewish History: Insights from Publishing Southern Jewish History Monday, March 16 • 7:00pm Cost: Free, but RSVP requestedSouthern Jewish History, the annual journal of the Southern Jewish Historical Society, has been the preeminent scholarly publication for the study of Jews and Jewish life throughout the region. A panel of experts will show how essays focused on Atlanta serve as a lens for the evolution of scholarship about the Jews of the South. Writings and reviews of Atlanta’s rich and deep history—from Rabbi Marx and the Unity Club in the early 20th Century, to Rabbi Rothschild’s wartime service and his life of social activism, to Jews involvement with the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary—paint a nuanced portrait of how both individuals and institutions are involved in preserving values and in being change-agents. The panel will also discuss how the journal itself has evolved, along with the Southern Jewish Historical Society.

WELC PRESCHOOL TEACHING OUR TODDLERS: Why Ages Two and Three Are So ImportantWELC Helps Launch Our Youngest Learners Down the Right PathWe celebrate graduations in education, joyous achievements marking the completion of important school stages for our children and loved ones.
But kids’ confident academic success begins much earlier in their learning journeys—starting at two and three years old.
“Our work with kids at these ages has a life-lasting effect,” said teacher Ana Haznov of The Weinberg Early Learning Center (WELC) in Atlanta. WELC provides an elite, groundbreaking education program that forges a foundation for success for these teachable toddlers and prepares them for their next phases of academic and social advancement.
Educators and parents recognize how much ages two and three matter for social and emotional development, establishing values, and measuring language milestones. Research tells us that by age three children are forming five- and six-word sentences, remembering and telling stories, counting to 10, and understanding grammar.
So how does the WELC education program work for these young kids and their families?
It all starts with a dedicated focus on the young learners in an innovative school environment:• Small classes of a typically a dozen students, with a play-based
approach that engages and educates • Fun, creative, innovative, and experiential learning • A center-based curriculum that includes language, reading and
literature, math, science, music, and art• Focus on emotional, mental, social, and cognitive growth• A full experience of all senses to help all children develop their
minds at their appropriate pace
WELC also hires and rewards teachers with a p assion for child education, “making us feel wanted and needed,” according to Haznov.
The school embraces proven, concrete, evidence-based educational methods such as Reggio Emilia and Montessori as part of its foundation for growth and learning. WELC commits to an inclusive and inspiring learning environment for children ages three months to four years. As a nationally recognized religious education program for more than 15 years, WELC connects education with Jewish values while developing confident and respectful children in a religiously and ethnically diverse environment.
The education team at WELC takes particular pride in being part of the foundation for education at such an early and critical time for children’s achievement.
“They are our lawyers, doctors of our future,” said Haznov, “and I feel gratified in knowing that I was part of their growth.”
Those interested in learning more about the WELC platform for early education can inquire about an open house or schedule a private tour by contacting Sarah Shinsky or Audrey Henderson at 404-872-8662.
Being part of the Weinberg Early Learning Center at The Temple means…All three of my children have attended and graduated from the WELC. I couldn’t speak more highly of the quality of care from all the teachers and staff members. The love and warmth they show every day from the moment I would drop off my children until I would pick them up is unmatched. As for the education gained, I can confidently say that all of my kids were 100% ready for kindergarten after attending the WELC. There is nothing I would change about our family’s experience at the WELC!—Jill M., Atlanta, GA

Welcome back Rabbi Frederick Reeves!Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21Rabbi Reeves served as associate rabbi at The Temple from 2005-2013 and we are delighted that he is coming as a visiting scholar during his sabbatical from KAM Isaiah Israel in Chicago. Join us for Friday evening services as he delivers the sermon, “The Passover Story and the Actions it Requires of us Today” and Saturday morning Torah study where he will lead us in a look at the narratives in the Torah portion, to then explore how we use story, both from tradition and from our personal lives, to create meaning and direct our commitments to Jewish actions.
Rabbi Frederick Reeves is the spiritual leader of KAM Isaiah Israel, Illinois’s oldest synagogue. He is a passionate teacher of Torah,
believing that a dedication to understanding those narratives can improve our own lives and
the lives of all with whom we come into contact. Living the ideals of Torah has brought Rabbi Reeves to his dedication to social justice and interfaith cooperation. He is the president of the board of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, the Jewish voice for social
justice in Chicago, and the immediate past president of the Hyde Park &
Kenwood Interfaith Council. Prior to coming to KAM Isaiah Israel, Rabbi Reeves served as

Caring at The TempleOur Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during times of hardship or pastoral need, providing homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We have delivered more than 500 soups, and nearly every step of the program—from soup preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us know about fellow congregants in need—is led by members of our congregation.
Thank you to our Caring at The Temple volunteers who delivered soup this month: Scott Chalk, Sandy & Duane Cox, Brooke Dickerson, Karen Droze, Barbara Scheer-Eason, Doris Gordon, Libby Gozansky, Wendy Lipshutz, Scott Morris, Bob Nemo, Adam Oppenheimer, Robyn Ripps, Debbie Shelton, Howard Silvermintz, Laura Sladkus, Leslie Stone, Craig Taylor, and Bobbi Wilson.
To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah of bikkur cholim (visiting the sick) or to let us know who needs soup, please contact Rabbi Lydia Medwin at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.
MAC StatsAt The Temple, we are proud of our work supporting the Midtown Assistance Center. Below are some of the many ways you have made life better for some of our neighbors here in midtown Atlanta:
Zaban Paradies CenterOver the past month, ZPC has averaged an occupancy rate of 90%. A couple of weeks have found us full with a waiting list. The need for safe shelter, food, and clothing is a critical one but for our couples, there is an even greater need. Being in a relationship is a key part of our residents’ identities, and their hopes for the future include becoming self-sufficient together. Recently, we hosted a focus group of past residents to learn more about how our services impact lives long-term. One couple shared that prior to learning about Zaban, they found a women’s shelter for the wife. The husband spent nights outside in the cold beside the shelter to be close to his wife and to make sure that she was safe. Finding out about Zaban changed their lives. They were able to move in to the Center together, obtain employment, and ultimately, move into an apartment. They have lived independently for three years and now have a family. Stories like these reflect the transformational nature of our work.
Our current occupancy rate is a direct reflection of the need for a supportive environment for couples experiencing homelessness. As our residential season comes to a close in April and we shift to after-care services, we recognize that couples experiencing homelessness will continue to need our support in a myriad of ways. We are striving to have a real and lasting impact on the lives of those we serve. This spring, we will take a deep dive into our services and spend time learning about how we can be more effective in meeting the needs of couples experiencing homelessness and their families.
The Board of Directors, staff, and residents greatly appreciate the continued support of our program. If you are interested in learning more about our work, check out our updated website: www.zabanparadiescenter.org, join us on Facebook and Instagram @zabanparadiescenter, or email us at [email protected]. Last, but not least, please mark your calendars to join us for our 2019-2020 Graduation Ceremony scheduled for the evening of April 13th in the Schwartz Goldstein Hall (more information to follow).
