WHRO is a public service institution of education, culture

and citizenship utilizing its communication resources to

serve and interact throughout Eastern Virginia.

From the Chief Executive Officer

I recently returned from visiting Capitol Hill where I spoke with members of Virginia’s congressional delegation to share the great work that WHRO is doing in Eastern Virginia, especially in the field of education. The educational content we deliver online to more than 280,000 students and 25,000 teachers enriches lives every day. From hands-on reading and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) events with children to professional development for educators, WHRO is a vital hub for educational resources in our community. I love being able to share these efforts with others!

I also love the feedback we have received from members who enjoy our television programs and on-demand access to additional shows through WHRO Passport. If you haven’t signed up for WHRO Passport yet, now is the time! This attractive member benefit allows you to watch even more episodes of your favorite PBS or locally produced shows—including full seasons of many current and past series—from any computer, smartphone, or tablet.

Whether you enjoy Masterpiece dramas like Victoria, Poldark, or Downton Abbey, or educational programs like Nature, Antiques Roadshow, or The Great British Baking Show, WHRO Passport gives you instant access wherever you are! Read more about WHRO Passport on the next page.

Speaking of television, it’s worthwhile to note that March 4 starts our first TV pledge drive of 2017. Our theme is Support What You Love—and we have a great lineup of programs for you this month. In addition to the season finales of Mercy Street and

Victoria, we will take you behind the scenes of the Broadway hit Hamilton with Hamilton’s America, a documentary that explores the making of the musical. Plus, learn about one of the nation’s most acclaimed filmmakers in Ken Burns: America’s Storyteller, and get an exclusive look at his upcoming production The Vietnam War, scheduled for release in fall 2017. Other highlights include the documentary Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise and a treat for bird lovers, Nature: Super Hummingbirds.

Radio listeners may have noticed a familiar favorite has returned. The Thistle & Shamrock airs on Sunday evenings on WHRV 89.5 FM. One of our most requested programs since it left the schedule in late 2007, the show explores Celtic music past and present. Music fans will also want to join us for a special screening opportunity. On March 5, we will offer a screening of the film Composed, a documentary about how classical musicians experience and overcome performance anxiety. Join us at the Naro Cinema for the film and meet some of our on-air staff. Visit whro.org/events for details.

Many thanks and remember March is the month to Support What You Love.

“I can always find something interesting to watch on WHRO!” That’s a comment we received recently from one of our mem-bers. It’s true. Whether you prefer news and public affairs, nature, history, travel, the arts, or compelling British dramas, WHRO offers something for everyone. Did you know that you can watch many of your favorite shows — even full seasons — online through WHRO Passport? This attractive member benefit allows you to binge watch shows from your computer, smartphone, or tablet.

“It provides a deep library of more than 1,000 hours of the best PBS programs including PBS signature series such as American Masters, Great Performances, Nature, Nova, Amer-ican Experience, and Antiques Roadshow, as well as the Ken Burns documentaries, and Rick Steves’ Europe,” said Dina Richards, WHRO Online Media Officer. The average WHRO member gives just over $200 per year. WHRO Passport is available to members who donate $60 per year or more. The station launched the service in July 2016, and more than 3,000 members have activated their accounts. “More people are realizing the value and ease of Passport every day,” said Phillip Perdue, WHRO Chief Development Officer. “Once people get in and use Passport, it becomes a regular part of how they get their PBS programs. PBS has never been easier and faster!”

WHRO Passport content is available on most over-the-top (OTT) devices including Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire, as well as

PBS Video and WHRO apps for iOS and Android platforms. The service gives members the option of watching shows when it is most convenient for them.

“The proliferation of mobile devices has rapidly changed the con-tent consumption habits and consumer expectations,” explained Richards. “This has created an urgent need to meet the audience where they are as traditional appointment-viewing is experiencing a significant decline. WHRO Passport does just that.”

Some shows are even available through Passport before they air on television. For the recent premiere of Victoria, PBS released all seven episodes through Passport the same day that the series premiere was broadcast. “While we don’t have spe-cific details about PBS’s plans for releasing new programs in advance of their broadcast, we’re more likely to see this trend increasing in the future,” Richards said.

If you are eligible for Passport and have not activated your ac-count yet, now is a great time. Kamaria Mason can help you get started or answer any questions. Call her at 757-889-9419.

You will also want to download the WHRO app—a one-stop destination for your favorite content. The app features all six of WHRO’s live radio streams, on-demand national and locally produced radio shows, and the latest NPR news articles and audio segments with the option to pause and rewind live audio. For television viewers, the app gives access to the entire WHRO Passport library, as well as all locally produced programs like Curate and Comedy Bootcamp. Download it at whro.org/apps

A Classical Approach to Stress ManagementSpring is nearly here, as Mother Nature brings the magic and beauty of the beautiful outdoors. Daffodils begin to sprout, the songbirds return to the trees. It would seem the perfectly peaceful scene. Along with the beauty, springtime is also one of the most stressful seasons for many folks! Spring cleaning, getting the yard in order, pulling everything out of the garage, outdoor events to plan, and those TAXES are due! It is easy to understand how stress can grab hold in a big way. So how do we manage stress?

Classical music, for one, is an amazing stress-busting tool! Scientists have proven through brain and biofeedback research that the proof is clear: To melt stress in its tracks, try some classical music! We asked Wayla Chambo, host of Afternoon Delights, what she would recommend. Wayla suggests the second movement of the Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, BWV 1043, by Johann Sebastian Bach.

“Bach’s music is both beautiful and intricate. I find this slow movement soothing to listen to, partly because of the sheer beauty of the melody, and partly because of the interaction of the instruments and the melodic lines. When I become absorbed in listening to this piece—just listening, not doing anything else—I experience the kind of relaxation that comes from having my attention focused solely on one thing. I like to listen to this when I feel overwhelmed or when the world seems chaotic and out of control. I also have a positive personal association with this piece of music—I played this movement (adapting one of the violin parts for my instrument, the flute) at a dear friend’s wedding several years ago, so that happy memory also arises as I listen to this music.”

You can listen to Afternoon Delights 3:00-7:00 p.m. and learn more stress-busting classical favorites from the entire WHRO 90.3 FM air staff at whro.org

The Thistle & Shamrock Returns As the famous saying goes, “When one door closes, another door opens.” With the discontinuation of BackStory, we were thrilled to bring back The Thistle & Shamrock, one of the most requested programs since it left the schedule in late 2007. Thistle & Shamrock is your weekly bridge between the established architects of Celtic roots music and the rising generation of musicians. Host Fiona Ritchie is fascinated by the place where this music meets the world, so you can expect to hear her investigate its influences in world and contemporary music too. Beyond that, have no expectations in particular. Just wait and see where the music takes you.

So are you ready to step into the heart of ancient Celtic tradition? Then tune in Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. on WHRV 89.5 FM. We’re expecting you!

Educationally Speaking Produced by Dr. Barry Graham and Kathy MartinThere is little more at the forefront of America’s families than the debate over the state of education today. Topics range from the need for liberal arts and vocational education and the state of today’s GI Bill, to the science behind what makes a good student and how to best develop their learning. This series explores the questions of what constitutes good learning. How do we best reintroduce returning veterans back into the classroom? What is the state of specialized education? Can students change their capacity to learn? Is there still a need for history and literature in higher education? Educationally Speaking is a five-week series that examines the state of learning in today’s classrooms. Local educators, students, and professionals examine these topics, which then are further explored in an hour-long segment airing Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. on WHRV 89.5 FM culminating with a roundtable discussion hosted by Barbara Hamm Lee and Another View special on March 30.

“Tonight, the day we have all worked and prayed so hard for has finally come.”

-Richard M. NixonMarch 29, 1973

March 29, 2017, is the 44th anniversary of the withdrawal of the last American

troops from Vietnam. They did not return to parades and celebrations, but to protest and anger. Marine Vietnam Veteran, Les Page, shares his story of service and homecoming.

One day in April of 1964, my father asked what college I was going to when I graduated high school in June. I didn’t answer quickly enough and was advised that he and I would be going to the post office later that day. It was a Saturday. The only thing open on a Saturday in the post office back then were the recruiting offices. He thought that was a terrific idea for a young man not yet sure of what he wanted to do. I have always hated it when he was right. At the end of the day I was enlisted and would head to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego on the 4th of August 1964. Under the cover of darkness on this summer evening my feet found the “Yellow Footprints” and I would become familiar with the phrase “What have I done?” That’s the PG version of the phrase.

“I wish I could say the return was pleasant and uneventful. But like many, more than likely most, returning from Vietnam, it was not.”

I had entered on a guarantee of air wing service and was assigned to a ‘fixed’ wing squadron in El Toro, CA. During my first month with the squadron, it was made known that a new helicopter had been purchased from Boeing, the CH-46 and new helicopter squadrons, bound for Vietnam, were being formed at Marine Corps Air Station, Tustin. The base was commonly called LTA, Lighter Than Air.

I was transferred to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-164. Historically, the first 46 Squadron in Vietnam March 1966.

I remained with HMM-164 serving as an aerial door gunner and hydraulics mechanic until January 1967. I returned from Vietnam and was stationed in Tustin where I finished my last year of active duty. My wife, Elaine, and I were married in July of 1967 and our son was born in August 1969.

I wish I could say the return was pleasant and uneventful. But like many, more than likely most, returning from Vietnam, it was not. I joined to serve, as did my father and my grandfather (Army WWI), a grateful and deserving nation. I returned to a politically fed, media provoked, and ungrateful population. I will always be proud of my service, proud of those I served with, extremely grateful to have been born an American, and for the opportunities I’ve had. It was then, way back then, that I swore with every breath I would never ignore anyone that serves this nation.

For me, the Marine Corps was college and Vietnam was graduate school. There is a saying that for many may have little meaning. For those who have served, it means more than can be expressed with the words. “I may not have a degree, but I do have a DD214 (discharge papers).”

To all veterans we say, “Thank you and welcome home.”

Very early every morning I walk my dog, Sophie, with a committed group of dog owners (technically, I do not actually walk; I stand there shivering, drink my coffee and watch Sophie frolic with her dog buddies). One of the owners is an elementary school teacher and, as a few snowflakes materialized on a recent morning, she reminisced how nice it would be to have a delay in the school opening. She then followed it up with how disappointed she was they lost a teacher workday due to the recent school snow closures. I am sure many students felt similarly as they lost their scheduled day off.

We all remember those days when meteorologists start predicting a glimmer of snow and both students and teachers cross fingers and toes for that bonus holiday known as… A Snow Day. Then, the dread of a make-up day sinks in.

Though some school divisions include a “bank” of days in the annual schedule to

accommodate for unexpected closures, it is hard to predict the number of days needed. So what else can school divisions do besides make-up days? Kentucky had an idea and launched the iLearn@home program. The school district’s website states the Kentucky Department of Education “approved waivers that allowed thirteen school districts to use non-traditional means of instruction when school is cancelled because of weather or another emergency” which allows students and teachers to work from home.

How does it work? Teachers prepare assignments in advance that would take students a maximum of three hours to complete. Teachers can stay in their bunny slippers but are available via email from 7:20 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. and by phone from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The material does not teach new concepts, but reinforces and supplements what they are learning in school. Teachers may post lessons online but also prepare take-home packets so

internet access is not required. Though a 2014 study from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government found that students do not suffer academically by missing school on snow days, the win-win for the Kentucky schools and students is they do not have to make up the school day by reducing holidays or teacher workdays, or by adding days at the end of the year.

Not all processes work for all students and school divisions, but it is important know that educators are exploring options to help kids stay in school and graduate.

Who Doesn’t Love a Snow Day!
