• Podcasting is another tool for educators

• A different way to disseminate information

• Content is created in a way that allows the student to decide when/where to access it (online or offline)

• Fast Distribution: auto sent instead of manually retrieved  

PROS:

• Easy: 1) Create audio/video, 2) Make into mp4 or mp3, 3) Publish

• Relatively Inexpensive: already have most hardware

• Simple: Automation of creation process increasing

• Added Modality: Another modality/style to assist in learning

• Accessibility: ADA improvement, aid to ESL students

• Test Prep/Review: Often used to review for Test/Quiz 

• Facilitates “On the Go” Learning: View a podcast while on the bus/subway or during lunch. Listen to a podcast while commuting, walking to class, exercising, etc.

• Content Control: Content on users computers (not streamed)

CONS:

• Misaligned Course Pedagogy: Organization & Distribution.End user now receives content whenever it is published as opposed to regularly returning to course website, navigating through area and checking for new content.

• Takes Time and Effort: no matter how easy and fast it is to make, a podcast still takes consideration and application to make it effective.

Lectures, Supplemental Material,Promotion/Advertisement, Sick day/Instructor is Away,Student Projects, Additional Resources,Clarifications/Corrections Other/Etc.

HOW OTHER UNIVERSITIES ARE USING PODCASTS:

*SPECIFIC EXAMPLES: University of Wisconsin-MadisonForeign Language Students: Review films from other countries,

review scenario based conversations and answer oral questions

Biology Students: use podcasts to find content in microscopes

Communicative Disorders Students: listen to audio clinical cases studies and rate the severity of speech disorders

How does one make a Podcast?

• Record audio and/or video (make any edits if wanted/needed)

• Convert into mp3 (audio) or mp4 (video) format

• Place it online and into RSS feed (K-State Online)

What are the costs associated with each?

• Software (Open source/freeware versions are available: example: Audacity)

• Computer (any computer for audio podcasts, more powerful one for video podcasts)

• Digital Video Camera and Microphone

Costs will vary based off of what “type” of Podcast you want to make.

Where does K-State Online come into the picture?

• New K-State Online feature: “RSS Feed Options” tool.

• Any folder in K-State Online can be turned into a podcast.

• RSS buttons are automatically displayed within the course.

• Student simply clicks on a RSS button to subscribe.

• Place a copyright notice in syllabus (regarding podcast)

• State that content is for educational use only

• State that content is not to be distributed
