WHY MUSIC?
I would teach children music, physics and philosophy;
but most importantly music, for in the patterns of music
and all the arts are the keys to learning. Plato

PARTICIPATION, POTENTIAL, PERSISTENCE AND PARTNERSHIPS
Just Brass offers participants the chance to participate in music within a program that believes in the potential of all children,
is persistent in its support, and builds partnerships across the community to ensure all involved achieve at school and beyond.
THE JUST BRASS VISION
For young people to experience the rich benefits of music, through individual
and group learning, irrespective of family, school or community circumstances.
Just Brass aims to work closely with schools, families and disadvantaged communities to ensure that every child
is able to enjoy music and reach their full potential by achieving at school and contributing to their peer
group and community.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Just Brass is committed to maximising
its capacity to assist children and young
people by working in partnership with a
range of community partners.
Just Brass partners The Salvation Army
with local primary schools, with the
support of other community
organisations, to develop the strong
local connections that maximise the
benefits to young people.
Founding partners include the
SongRoom, St George Foundation,
The Salvation Army South Barwon,
and Oberon South, Tate Street and
Whittington Primary Schools in
Geelong.
For programs like Just Brass there
are a range of local Salvation Army
and community bands who assist in
mentoring and training the program
participants.
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
Just Brass offers children and young people a
chance to learn a musical instrument and
develop their potential as a leader in their peer
group and local community. Every student
receives a weekly music lesson and the
opportunity to play in one of three bands.
Students are transported from partnering
schools to Salvation Army Centres for weekly
band rehearsals. All activities are no, or low,
cost to ensure there are no barriers to
participation.
Bands cater for all levels of skill: beginners for
those just starting out, junior for those a little
down the track, and intermediate or youth.
PROGRAM DIRECTOR
John Collinson is Director of Just Brass. An
accomplished musician, John is a graduate of
the Victorian College of the Arts and has
performed with many bands and orchestras
including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra,
Orchestra Victoria and the RAAF Central Band.
