Bred by Harvey Clarke and Brookdale Farm, Stop-

chargingmaria sold for $47,000 to Woodford Thor-

oughbreds at the Keeneland September yearling sale

in 2012 before Repole bought her for $220,000 at the

Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s 2013 selected sale of 2-year-

olds in training.

The Courtelis acquired Stopchargingmaria after

Repole offered her through the 2014 Fasig-Tipton

November sale, where she brought a final bid of

$3.15 million but failed to meet her reserve price.

The Courtelis contacted Repole after the sale through

Pletcher, bought her privately, and returned her to

racing. In Town and Country's colors, Stopchargingma-

ria won the Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes (gr. III) and

the Shuvee Handicap (gr. III) on her way to winning

the Distaff. In 2015 alone, she picked up $1.43 million

of her $3,014,000 in earnings.

For each year she raced from 2 to 5, Stopcharginma-

ria won or placed in a grade I stakes.

"Stopchargingmaria is not only one of the best fillies

we have had in our barn. She has become part of the

family," Pletcher said. "She deserves a great retirement."

Potter said no plans have been discussed regarding

breeding the mare next year. She retires to Town and

Country Farm near Georgetown, Ky.

"We have not got around to those discussions yet,"

he said. "She has given us the biggest thrill we've had in

racing, so we are just enjoying having her on the farm."

Kiki Courtelis, chief executive officer of Town and

Country Racing, said she hoped to watch Stopcharg-

ingmaria defend her Distaff title this year, but acknowl-

edged it was more important to have her retire in good

health.

"She has given us so much joy. It is our turn to give

back to her by honoring her wishes," Kiki Courtelis said.

"We are thrilled to have her home sound." BH

OFFLEE WILD DIES IN TURKEY AT AGE 16By Eric Mitchell

Grade I winner Offlee Wild died of a heart attack

Sept. 6 at the farm of his owner Tevfik Celikoglu

in Turkey, according to the Turkish Jockey Club.

The 16-year-old sire of 2009 champion 2-year-old

filly She Be Wild and multiple grade I winner Bayern

died while he was taken from his stall to his paddock

around 8:30 p.m. local time. The cause of death was

confirmed by veterinarians.

Offlee Wild was bred in Kentucky by Dorothy Matz

and sold at the 2001 Keeneland September year-

ling sale through Middlebrook Farm's consignment

for $325,000 to Azalea Stables. At 3 in 2003 he won

the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) and finished third in the

Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), and continued im-

proving with age for trainer Tom Smith. At 4 he was

transferred to trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., and won the

grade II Massachusetts Handicap. At 5 he captured

the Suburban Handicap (gr. I) and Excelsior Breed-

ers' Cup Handicap

(gr. III). The son of

Wild Again is the

second graded

stakes winner pro-

duced by Alvear (by

Seattle Slew), a half

sister to top sire

Dynaformer.

Quick out of the

gate at stud, Offlee

Wild was the lead-

ing freshman sire

of 2009, powered

by the brilliant

performances of

Nancy Mazzoni's

She Be Wild, who

won three stakesm,

including the Grey

Goose Breeders'

Cup Juvenile Fillies

(gr. I) for trainer

Wayne Catalano.

The filly ended the

year with $1,311,040

in earnings. Offlee Wild stood his first four seasons at

Darley.

Offlee Wild's next big runner would not appear

until 2014, when Kaleem Shah's Bayern broke his

maiden in his first start in early January at Santa Anita

Park and two races later finished third in the Arkan-

sas Derby (gr. I). Bred by Helen Alexander, Bayern

won four graded stakes for Hall of Fame trainer Bob

Baffert, including the 2014 Breeders' Cup Classic

and the William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (both

grade I). He also won the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II)

and the Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II). He entered

stud in 2016 at Hill 'n' Dale Farms near Lexington,

where his fee is $15,000.

Out of 441 foals of racing age, Offlee Wild has

sired 18 black-type stakes winners and 16 black-type-

placed runners worldwide through Sept. 6. His stakes

winners include six graded or group stakes winners.

He was relocated to Turkey for the 2015 breeding

season and is represented by 19 Turkish-bred foals

this year. BH

LEPAROUX READY TO REJOIN TEPINBy Blood-Horse Staff

Jockey Julien Leparoux, who injured his wrist at

Saratoga Race Course in August, is set to rejoin

champion Tepin the $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile

(Can-IT) Sept. 17 at Woodbine.

Leparoux has six mounts on the Sept. 8 card at

Kentucky Downs for his return to racing, after recov-

ering from a non-displaced fracture of his left wrist

he sustained because of a saddle slip in the Aug. 6

Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes in New York. He has

been aboard the 2015 champion turf female for her

last 12 starts, including a victory over males in last

year's Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) and a dominant run

in her most recent outing, the Queen Anne (Eng-I) at

Royal Ascot.

The Bernstein mare trained by Mark Casse

breezed five furlongs over the Saratoga turf training

course in :59.88 Sept. 5 under jockey Florent Geroux,

but the Woodbine Mile mount was always reserved

for Leparoux.

"That was never in question," Casse said. "Right

now, (Geroux) is the understudy and he's got to know

Tepin quite well, but there was never any question

that Julien would ride her.

"Julien is, and has been, a real big part of our team

and any time you have a team player down, it hurts.

He's breezed horses for us this week at Churchill.

We've been anxious to have him back and not just for

Tepin. He'll ride Airoforce this weekend in the Dueling

Grounds Derby (at Kentucky Downs) for us."

Casse was particularly impressed with Tepin's

most recent breeze, in which she worked in company

with Enstone.

"Tepin was super," Casse said. "She's training as

good as she ever has, if not better. She worked with

Enstone, a Canadian-bred we ran at Saratoga and got

beat a head."

Tepin is slated to work once more at Saratoga

before shipping to Woodbine Sept. 13 with an entou-

rage of stakes hopefuls.

"Tepin will work on Sunday at Saratoga and arrive

at Woodbine, with an entire contingency of horses,

probably on Tuesday," Casse said. "Tepin, World Ap-

proval, Enstone, and Black Canary will come up. Irad

Ortiz will ride Black Canary in the Natalma."

Casse has seven fillies nominated to the Natalma

(Can-IT) and another five to

the Summer Stakes (Can-IIT).

Both juvenile events, slated for

one mile on the turf Sept 18,

are part of the "Win and You're

In" series for the respective

Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT) and

the Juvenile Turf (gr. IT).

"If all goes well we have

Thora Barber, Victory to Vic-

tory, Black Canary, Enstone,

and possibly Kodiak Gal for the

Natalma," Casse said. "And as

far as the Summer, we have

Conquest Sure Shot and Con-

quest Farenheit."

Casse noted that Woodbine

Mile nominee Conquest En-

forcer will instead race Sept. 11

in the $100,000 Allied Forces

Stakes, a six-furlong turf sprint

at Belmont Park. BH

SALES UPDATE

TOP 10 KEENELAND SEPTEMBER PINHOOK PROSPECTSBy Ron Mitchell

Based on their respective purchase prices

when they initially went through the sales ring

as weanlings, three colts sired by Pioneerof the

Nile are among the top 10 pinhook prospects for

the Keeneland September yearling sale, which

runs Sept. 12-25.

Hunter Valley Farm, which hit a home run when

a Tapit colt bought as a weanling for $500,000 was

sold for $800,000 to China Horse Club at this year’s

Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale, seeks another

pinhook score with Hip 396. Bred in Kentucky by

Richard L. and Katherine H. Elam, the full brother

to grade II winner Cairo Prince and half brother to

the dam of grade I winner Outwork was bought

by Hunter Valley for $410,000 from the St. George

Sales consignment at Keeneland November.

The other top Keeneland September pinhook

prospects sired by Pioneeerof the Nile, the WinStar

stallion responsible for Triple Crown winner Ameri-

can Pharoah, are Hips 529 and 266.

Consigned by Warrendale Sales, Hip 529 is a

full brother to grade I winner Midnight Storm and

was bred in Kentucky by Alex Venneri and Mar-

jorie Post Dye. He was bought by Venneri Racing

for $300,000 from Hunter Valley Farm at Keene-

land last November.

Hip 266, from the extended female family of

grade I winners Purge, Jersey Town, and Jersey Girl,

was a $290,000 Keeneland November purchase by

Baccari Bloodstock from Paramount Sales. Bred in

Kentucky by Charles Fipke, he is part of Baccari’s

Keeneland consignment.

The second highest priced Keeneland pinhook

prospect is Hip 477, a Tapit filly from the female

family of Canadian Triple Crown winner With Ap-

proval, classic victor Touch Gold, and grade I winner

Brilliant Speed. Bred in Kentucky by Hill ‘n’ Dale

Equine Holdings and Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms, the filly

was bought by Siena Farms for $350,000 from Hill

‘n’ Dale Sales Agency as a weanling at Keeneland’s

November sale. She is consigned by Taylor Made

Sales Agency.

Hip 282 is a Smart Strike half sister to graded

stakes-placed Cautious Giant, consigned by Baccari

Bloodstock. She was bought by Casino King for

$310,000 as a weanling from Eaton Sales, agent for

breeder Grousemont Farm.

A colt from the first crop of Claiborne Farm’s Orb

and produced from grade III winner Just Louise, a

half sister to multiple graded winner Sara Louise,

was a $300,000 Keenelend November acquisition

by Norwood Stables from Paramount Sales. Con-

signed as Hip 430 by Dromoland Farm, the colt was

bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm.

The only yearling among the top 10 pinhook

prospects that did not previously sell at Keene-

land is Hip 533, a Japanese-bred son of Stay Gold

bought by WinStar Farm for the U.S. equivalent

of $259,200 at the JRA July sale last year. Bred

by and offered at auction in Japan by Paca Paca

Farm, the colt consigned to Keeneland by Tay-

lor Made Sales Agency is out of the High Yield

mare Nan, runner-up in the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT)

and bought by Paca Paca for $150,000 from the

Fasig-Tipton November sale in 2010. BH

DALMORE HEADS TO LOUISIANA FOR SUPER DERBYBy Jeremy Balan

Up against a trio of older grade I winners in the

TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I) Aug. 20, jockey Kent

Desormeaux called Dalmore's fifth-place run in the 1

1/4-mile Del Mar summer feature a "learning experi-

ence."

Now a familiar set of connections hope that

top-level schooling session will pay dividends in the

future, which begins Sept. 10 in the $400,000 Super

Derby (gr. III) at Louisiana Downs.

The Colonel John colt trained by Keith Deso-

rmeaux and owned by Big Chief Racing looks to

bounce back Saturday against fellow grade III victor

and last-out Ohio Derby winner Mo Tom in the 1 1/8-

mile test.

"California Chrome—I don't know if anybody could

have caught him that day," said Matt Bryan, owner

of Big Chief Racing, of the Pacific Classic. "That being

said, it was an education.

"We needed to get him to settle and he didn't set-

tle great, but he's training good, he looks great, he's

healthy, and he's sound—so we're coming up to the

last few races where you can run against only 3-year-

olds, and the Super Derby is a big race."

Dalmore, who came into the Pacific Classic fol-

lowing a score in the Affirmed Stakes (gr. III) at Santa

Anita Park in July, is who Bryan hopes is the horse of

the future for Big Chief Racing. Along with dual grade

I winner Exaggerator and retired graded stakes-

placed Swipe, the $47,000 yearling buy at Keeneland

September in 2014 has completed a dream crop of

3-year-old males for Bryan and his partners.

"Our goal is to make him a good older horse," Bry-

an said of Dalmore. "When Keith bought Exaggerator,

Dalmore, and Swipe, he loved all three and he put

some of his own money in on Dalmore, so you know

how he feels about him.

"You dream that they would be this good, but no

way did we ever think they'd be as good as they are.

That's one heck of a crop. Our total investment was

$152,000 for those three. That's as good as it gets."

GMB Racing's Mo Tom looms the likely favorite

in the field of seven colts following his three-length

victory in the Ohio Derby June 25 for trainer Tom

Amoss, but Keene Thoroughbreds' Texas Chrome

has the advantage of experience over the Louisiana

Downs surface.

The Texas-bred son of Grasshopper, trained by J.

R. Caldwell, bested grade III winner Sharp Azteca by a

half-length Aug. 6 in the Super Derby Prelude Stakes.

Texas Chrome has hit the board in all but one start

in his 11-race career, which

includes five stakes wins

at four different racetracks

and graded stakes placings

in the Matt Wynn Staktes

(gr. III) at Churchill Downs

June 18 (third) and the Iowa

Derby (gr. III) July 1 at Pairie

Meadows (second).

Mending Fences (third),

Classy Bird (fifth), and Fort

Pulaski (seventh) also return

from the Prelude. The Farm

on 4's homebred Whatev-

erybodywants, a stakes-win-

ning son of Giant Oak who

enters the Super Derby off

a second-place run in the

West Virginia Derby (gr. II)

for trainer Kellyn Gorder,

completes the field. BHBENO

WATCHYOUROWNBOBBER TAKES ON HOOTENANNYBy Frank Angst

Watchyourownbobber will try for a third consecu-

tive stakes win at a third different track when he

faces an expected seven rivals in the $400,000 More

Than Ready Mile Stakes Sept. 10 at Kentucky Downs.

Another successful claim for Ken and Sarah Ram-

sey, Watchyourownbobber won the West Virginia

House of Delegates Speaker's Cup Stakes in August

at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort and in

July posted a clear win in the Warrior Veterans Stakes

at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino.

Since being claimed by trainer Mike Maker for

the Ramseys from a 2014 maiden race for $50,000,

Watchyourownbobber has won three stakes and

placed in a grade III test. The 4-year-old Hard Spun

colt has earned a total of $297,865.

To nail down his fourth stakes win, Watchy-

ourownbobber will have to knock off 2014 Breed-

ers' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) winner Hootenanny,

who enters off a confidence-building score in a

Sept. 3 allowance race at Belterra Park. That race

snapped a 4-race skid for the 4-year-old son of

Quality Road, and trainer Wesley Ward will try the

quick turnaround approach Saturday.

While Hootenanny and Watchyourownbobber will

be making their first Kentucky Downs starts, multiple

grade II winner Dimension returns to the site of his

2015 Kentucky Downs Turf Dash Stakes win in his

lone previous try on the unique course. BH

TEXAS RED NEARS RETURN TO TRAINING Keith Desormeaux admitted Sept. 7 that 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Texas Red is a long way away from a return to the starting gate, but the trainer expects the 4-year-old Afleet Alex colt to return to his barn at Santa Anita Park soon.

ARLINGTON-WASHINGTON FUTURITY FIELD SETBy Lenny Shulman

A dozen 2-year-olds are scheduled to go seven fur-

longs on the Arlington International Racecourse

Polytrack Sept. 10 in the $100,000 Arlington-Washing-

ton Futurity (gr. III).

Carolyn Wilson's Wellabled comes in with an inter-

esting background. The son of Shackleford broke his

maiden at Arlington by 7 1/2 lengths at five furlongs,

then shipped to Saratoga Race Course, where he ran

well before being pipped on the line in the Skidmore

Stakes on turf. Larry Rivelli trains.

Star Empire will make his first trip to Chicago

after winning his first two starts at Belmont Park and

Presque Isle Downs. The Belmont race on dirt was

more impressive than the synthetic start at Presque

Isle, but the Foxwedge colt clearly has talent under

the supervision of trainer Wesley Ward.

Debut winner Romeo O Romeo ran a fast 5 1/2

furlongs at Arlington and the Ontario-bred by Ma-

cho Uno, out of graded winner Romance Is Diane, is

working well for his first stakes start.

Oso Ready went gate to wire to break his maiden

first time out at Ellis Park and adds more pace to this

speedy lineup. St. Louie Guy has run third, second,

and first at Arlington in his three outings, and won

from just off the pace. Brave Benny is also a debut

Arlington winner but failed to fire in a subsequent

stakes at Prairie Meadows after having trouble leav-

ing the gate. Stand and Cheer has hit the board in

all three of his starts but has been defeated by three

entered in the Arlington-Washington Futurity.

Maxus went a mile to win his initial start in a maid-

en claiming race on the turf. He steps up, shortens

up, and moves to the synthetic. Maidens En Hanse,

Birdsnest Party, Ptolemy, and Seven Forty Seven, all

with one race under their belts, complete the field.

Also on the Saturday card, 2-year-old fillies get a

run in the Arlington-Washington Lassie, the race be-

fore the Futurity, at the same seven furlongs. Debut

maiden special weight winners Royalty Princess, Dia-

dura, and Spirituality head the cast. Royalty Princess

ran a very fast :58.59 for five furlongs on the Arling-

ton turf and should be running early from the rail. BH

BEN'S CAT CHASES LAUREL DASHBy Blood-Horse Staff

During a distinguished 58-race career that began

in 2010, Ben's Cat has 32 victories—26 of them in

stakes—and has earned more than $2.6 million.

Bred, owned, and trained by Hall of Fame horse-

man King Leatherbury, the popular Maryland-bred

has never lost more than three races in a row. The

10-year-old Parker's Storm Cat gelding will look to

continue that streak when he enters the gate in the

$100,000 Laurel Dash as part of the 11-race Turf Fes-

tival program Sept. 10 at Laurel Park.

Ben's Cat is a two-time winner of the Laurel Dash,

in 2011 and 2013. He was second by three-quarters

of a length behind filly Jazzy Idea's track-record per-

formance in 2012 and third by a length in 2014.

"It's right here on our home ground, it's on the

turf, it's $100,000, it's a perfect spot basically since

all we have to do is walk over to the paddock," Leath-

erbury said. "This is the spot to run him, no doubt

about that."

Ben's Cat opened 2016 with back-to-back wins,

an open allowance May 1 at Laurel and his fourth

straight Jim McKay Turf Sprint May 20 at Pimlico Race

Course. He has followed with three consecutive third-

place finishes, all in stakes, most recently Aug. 20

in his attempt to win Laurel's Mister Diz for a North

American record-tying seventh straight year.

"To be honest, the Mister Diz was a big disappoint-

ment," Leatherbury said. "It really was a disappoint-

ment, but this is horse racing. He's a remarkable

horse. To just keep coming back race after race like

he has is remarkable. We're as good as we can be

under the circumstances."

Leatherbury said Ben's Cat emerged from the

Mister Diz with several superficial cuts on his legs,

but the trainer was unsure whether it was a factor in

the race. Ben's Cat was in striking position at the top

of the stretch but was unable to unleash a late run to

catch 43-1 longshot winner John Jones.

Ben's Cat has lost three straight races three times

previously in his career: Dec. 19, 2010-Feb. 21, 2011,

Sept. 1, 2014-Oct. 18, 2014, and Sept. 7, 2015-Nov.

25, 2015. Each time he came back to win.

"He seems to be OK now," Leatherbury said. "You

don't know really how much it mattered in the finish

of the race. You like to give a horse excuses but,

generally, results are the thing. We got beat up a little

bit in that race last time that he ran and it took him

a little bit longer to recover than normal. He worked

(Sept. 6) and went nice, so we're in good shape. We're

going to enter with every intention to run."

A field of 13 is entered, including also-eligibles

John Jones and Weekend Hideaway.

John Jones was a front-running winner of the

Mister Diz in his stakes debut, which was also his first

start since being claimed by trainer Lacey Gaudet for

owner Matthew Schera.

"I did think at the head of the lane that it would

be about time," Gaudet said. "When you see a horse

that's 40-1 in front, you know that they're going to be

coming to get you. They did. They tried to come and

get him and he just kicked back on." BH

ARMED AND ASSAULT'S MATCH RACE OF THE DECADEBy Tom Hall

Match races have long been threads in the fabric

of horse racing in America, as far back as the

heyday of the Antebellum South, when noted sire

Lexington defeated the filly Sallie Waters in three-

mile heats in New Orleans in 1853.

Moving on to 1920, 3-year-old sensation Man

o’ War took the measure of the previous year’s

Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton, in the Kenilworth

Gold Cup.

Then in 1938, deemed the “race of the century,”

Seabiscuit and 1937 Triple Crown hero War Admiral

faced off in the Pimlico Special, an event so much a

part of everyday conversation among all Americans

that it was widely covered by media outlets. The race

caused the wheels of government to grind to a com-

plete halt, as President Franklin Roosevelt stopped

a cabinet meeting to listen to the radio broadcast of

Seabiscuit's victory.

Although it did not rival the spectacle created by

Seabiscuit and War Admiral some nine years earlier,

a match race contested between the top two older

horses of the year held at Belmont Park Sept. 27,

1947, could be referred to as the “match race of the

decade.”

From one gate departed King Ranch’s 1946 Tri-

ple Crown victor, Horse of the Year, and champion

3-year-old male Assault. From the other, Calumet

Farm’s 6-year-old Armed, the champion older male of

1946.

Armed had been the scourge of the South and

Midwest. A gelded son of Bull Lea, Armful began the

1947 season in Florida, where he went undefeated

in four races and held the Hialeah’s stakes for older

horses (the Widener and the McLennan handicaps)

for ransom. After failing in the Santa Anita Handicap,

he returned to Florida to take the Gulfstream Park

Handicap on his way to dominate added-money

events at Arlington Park and Washington Park.

Robert Kleberg’s Assault was slow to start his 1947

campaign, but when he did the Eastern older horse

handicaps fell like dominoes before him. He took the

Grey Lag, followed by the Dixie, Suburban, Brook-

lyn, and Butler. The son of Bold Venture—Igual only

faltered in the Empire Gold Cup at Belmont, where

he finished behind Stymie and Natchez under equal

weights.

By midsummer, plans were being crafted for a

meeting between the two, a $100,000 winner-take-all

at Washington Park, the richest two-horse race ever

seen. Assault shipped to Chicago to prepare for

the race, but came up sore. The race, named The

Special, was rescheduled under the same con-

ditions for Sept. 27 at Belmont, where the result

failed the hyped anticipation.

Armed took the lead from the gate and kept

the measure of Assault at every call. The best

Assault could muster was a two-length challenge

at the final turn, which Armed thwarted with an

eight-length mastery at the wire.

The easy win was mitigated by the tales of

Assault being footsore after a workout a few days

before the match.

Armed was named 1947 Horse of the Year

and champion older male. He raced until age 9.

Assault retired to stud but returned to race after

he proved to be sterile, and ran until age 7. BH

Yankee Rose finished second to Capitalist in the

YANKEE ROSE TAKES ON BOYS IN GOLDEN ROSEBy Tara Madgwick

The $1 million ATC Golden Rose for 3-year-olds is

the first group I event in Sydney for the new rac-

ing season and will be run Sept. 10 at Rosehill.

Since the 1,400-meter (about seven furlongs) race

was elevated to group I status in 2009, it has proven a

passport to a stud career at major commercial farms.

Darley stands four of those past Golden Rose win-

ners in Denman (2009), Epaulette (2012), Hallowed

Crown (2014), and Exosphere (2015).

This year they will send out two top chances in

Astern (Medaglia D'Oro) and Impending (Lonhro).

The former is well established with four wins from

five starts, while the latter shows promise and is

seeking his first stakes win.

Other colts with serious credentials include El Divino

(Snitzel), the half brother to champion racehorse Winx,

and talented up-and-comer Divine Prophet (Choisir).

The colts won't have the race entirely to them-

selves, with star fillies Yankee Rose (All American)

ARLINGTON-WASHINGTON FUTURITY (GR. III)Arlington Park, Saturday, September 10, Race 87f (all-weather), $100,000, 2yo, 4:56 PM (local)

Carolyn Wilson's Wellabled comes in with an interesting background. The son of Shackleford broke his maiden at Arlington by 7 1/2 lengths at five furlongs, then shipped to Saratoga Race Course, where he ran well before being pipped on the line in the Skidmore Stakes on turf. Star Empire will make his first trip to Chicago after winning his first two starts at Belmont Park and Presque Isle Downs. Debut winner Romeo O Romeo ran a fast 5 1/2 furlongs at Arlington and the Ontario-bred by Macho Uno, out of graded winner Romance Is Diane, is working well for his first stakes start.—L.S.
