About Our Worship“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’”

Luke 2:10, 11

On this fourth Sunday in Advent we light the final gold candle, in preparation for the lighting of the white Christ candle at tomorrow tonight’s 7:00 p.m. Candlelight Service. The advent season anticipates our celebration of the birth of Christ. Anticipation is an important part of every believer’s life. In Old Testament times the people of Israel anxiously awaited the coming of the Messiah and the inauguration of His kingdom. Today, we too should be waiting with the same urgent expectancy as the Israelites of old. But our anticipation is the Lord’s second advent – when He comes in glory at the sound of the trumpet to bring final victory over sin and death. As one unknown poet put it:

Not only looking, but longing the blessed Lord’s return to greet; Our crowns of glory to gather and cast them with joy at His feet,Not only waiting, but watching, wistfully scanning the skies;Anticipating that daybreak when the world’s true Sun shall rise.

The Old Testament prophecies give amazing specifics concerning the Lord’s first advent. Micah gives the exact location of His birth (Micah 5:2), Isaiah tells us that He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). In the same way, the New Testament tells us what to look for regarding Christ’s second advent. “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations…when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:25-28).

This Sunday, Pastor Drew preaches on the humility of Jesus, who left behind His godly prerogatives in order to come into the world as a servant. Just as over 2,000 years ago Christ’s birth changed the course of human history, so will His return as our King of kings. Lets us, then, join our voices as we rejoice in the truth that God’s eternal promises are faithful and true. Unto us a child is given! Unto us a child is born!

The Confession of Faith (Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1)

Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong - body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.

He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him.

Pastoral Prayer

The Confession of Sin (please use the prayer below as a guide)

Eternal God, you do not change. You have revealed yourself to me in your Word. You call me to worship you in spirit and in truth. But I confess that I often worship not your true self but who I wish you to be. I too often ask You to bless what I do rather than seeking to do what you bless. Forgive me for seeking concessions when I should be seeking guidance. Forgive me when my worship shapes You into what I want instead of shaping me into what You want. Help me to bow before Your majesty and so live for You now and forever, in Christ. Amen.

The Assurance of John 5:24

“Jesus said, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.  He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.’”

Hymn of Response No. 213 WHAt CHiLd is tHis? Traditional English Carol

VERSE 1What child is this who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; haste, haste to bring Him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.

VERSE 2Why lies He in such mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear, shall pierce Him through; the cross be borne for me, for you; hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe, the son of Mary.
