Developing a PC Lifecycle Management Strategy

Currently, you have no accurate or reliable records of who has what equipment

and where it is located

– Computers, mobile devices, servers, switches, etc.

– Need real-time records

– SCCM is not accurate

» Only removed from database after it has not checked in for 90 days

» Computers without SCCM agent or with corrupted SCCM agent not included

– Sitting in storage rooms

– Sitting in plants

– Held by HR

– People with multiple computers

Prepare / identify assets for Service Catalog and CMDB development /

implementation

 Need more robust reporting capabilities

Why Your Company Needs a PC Lifecycle Management Strategy (cont.)

Need to identify new computer models in a more timely manner

Should have periodic vendor RFPs to determine if we can get better pricing

and/or better computers

Defined refresh cycles, based on use of equipment, to eliminate old computers

and servers, forecast needs and provide better budget numbers

Standard process for retirement and disposal of computers and peripherals,

including the sanitization of hard drives before disposal

– Increased financial, regulatory and environmental risks make it necessary that we address the disposal process.

Track hardware issues to determine patterns with particular models

Better preparation for OS and/or software migrations / implementations

Identify and manage maintenance and break/fix programs on computers (e.g.,

self-maintainer program) and peripherals (e.g., printers)

Address data backup and retention (i.e., increase in space used)

Work with other IT teams to provide field input / perspective needed for

– Procurement (e.g., vendor issues)

– Software license administration / compliance

– Imaging

– Software distribution

– Remote support

– Patching

– Monitor and enforce policies and procedures

 Will be better prepared for

– Acquisitions and divestitures

– Data center moves or expansion

– Internal and external audits

 Flexibility for future strategic decisions
