Save the Date for the 2018 WIC Training Conference The 2018 Training Conference will be held Thursday June 21, 2018, at the Iowa State University Scheman Building (1805 Center Dr. Ames, IA 50011). Please make sure to start planning clinic functions to attend this event. Event registration and additional details will be coming later. A block of 60 rooms is reserved for the conference on a first come first serve basis. Agencies will need to book their own reservations by calling the number below. Hotel rates are limited to $98 plus tax per night so this is a great deal.

Communication & Rapport Building Skills Workshop October 24, 2017

Purpose: A quality WIC nutrition assessment contains elements of both art and science to collect, evaluate and interpret the information provided by participants. Effective communication and rapport building skills foster a sense of trust and help build a relationship between participants and WIC staff. When participant- centered assessment and education techniques are used to encourage dialogue and feedback, quality information is collected for the assessment that contributes to individualized services addressing specific needs and interests. Target Audience: This interactive workshop for WIC nurses and dietitians will strengthen communication and rapport buildingskills.

Objectives

• Define rapport building and describe its use in nutritionassessment.• Describe how to use the various approaches in nutrition assessment and education.• Identify a participant’s stage of change and suggest appropriate counselingstrategies.• Identify barriers to communication and develop strategies to overcome them.• Demonstrate non-verbal communication techniques that result in positive communication.• Suggest at least one way to use the assessment ruler in nutrition assessment andcounseling.

Location The workshop will be held at the Ankeny campus of the Des Moines Area Community College. The workshop will be held in the Building 5, Room 1240A and 1240J. Parking is available at no charge. A map of the campus and directions to the campus are attached to this agenda.

Directions from Interstate 35

Directions from Interstate 80

Follow these directions if you will be traveling to Ankeny on Interstate 35.

Step Action 1 Exit the interstate at Exit 90 and turn west onto Oralabor Road (also

known as Highway 160). Note: This exit is marked for the community college.

2 Move to the right lane and continue on Oralabor Road to the intersection with Highway 69.

3 Turn north (or right) onto Highway 69 and move to the left lane. 4 Continue on Highway 69 to the first stoplights and turn west into the

campus. 5 Watch for signs to Building 5.

Follow these directions if you will be traveling to Ankeny from Interstate 80.

Step Action 1 Exit the interstate at Exit 136 and turn north onto Highway 69. 2 Move to the left lane and continue north on Highway 69 approximately

three miles. At the intersection with Highway 160, you can see the campus across the intersection and to the left.

3 Continue north through the intersection. Turn west (left) at the next stoplight to enter the campus.

Dietitians to document activities for their governing body. It is up to the licenseeto choose relevant courses to earn their continuing educationcredits.

Breastfed Infants Welcome

Mothers may bring quiet breastfeeding babies less than 6 months of age to the workshops. Due to the professional nature of the sessions, mothers are expected to care for their babies outside the meeting room when needed. Mothers are strongly encouraged to bring a support person along to provide baby care outside the meeting room.

Speaker Information Esgar Guarin-Nieto, MD FAAFP is a Family Physician at the Newton Clinic in Newton, IA where he has been dedicated to the practice of Primary and Maternal/Child Health Care including surgical obstetrical care. He holds hospital privileges at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, IA. Dr. Guarin-Nieto received his medical degree from the Universidad de Santander in Colombia, completed his Family Medicine Residency at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Maryland, and completed a Maternal and Child Health Fellowship at Brown University in Rhode Island. Dr. Guarin-Nieto is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Diplomate for the American Board of Family Medicine, and an Associate Member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Barbara D. Robertson, LLL, BA, MA, IBCLC has been involved in education for over 28 years receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1988 and her Master’s in Education in 1995. Barbara left teaching in 1995 to raise her two children. Barbara is now the Director of The Breastfeeding Center of Ann Arbor. Barbara has developed a 90-hour professional lactation training, a 20-hour course which fulfills the "Baby Friendly" education requirements. Barbara volunteered for the United States Lactation Consultation Association as the Director of Professional Development for 4.5 years. She is currently an Associate Editor for Clinical Lactation, a journal she helped create for USLCA. Barbara has free podcasts, a blog, and videos on her website bfcaa.com.

Brianna Powers, RN, BSN received her Bachelors in Nursing from Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. Brie was a nurse in women’s health for 13 years and now practices at Broadlawns Medical Center in mental health. In 2014 Brie co-founded Heartland Surrogacy, Iowa's first full service surrogacy agency, which matches intended parents throughout the United States with gestational carriers in the Midwest, with the aim of bringing joy to parents unable to carry a pregnancy. Brie has been a gestational carrier three times, in addition to her three biological daughters, and pumped and breastfed for her surrogate babies. As a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, Brie has counseled and examined sexual assault victims and served as an expert witness in court.
