Choosing where to go to college is a big decision, and we want to make sure you choose the right college for you. You will be likely to spend at least two years wherever you choose, so make sure you take some time to make your decision. Your school, or careers advice service, will be on hand to answer any questions you have, and you will have plenty of opportunities throughout the year to visit the college. Our extensive college campus has changed a lot over the past 25 years. Every year we invest time and money in the college to ensure that our students have the fantastic facilities they deserve and an exciting environment in which to learn. This year is no exception, and our newest students are currently enjoying our brand new music production suite, redeveloped student social areas and state-of-the-art IT facilities, as well as many other improvements. You’ll soon find that Wilberforce Sixth Form College feels like a small and friendly place . Being a sixth form college, most people here are just the same as you - school leavers aged 16 to 19 - so you will find plenty of people with whom you have things in common. Coming to a new place can sometimes seem daunting, but our students say they quickly found it easy to get around the campus and make new friends.

We know that socialising is a big part of college life for our students. Getting to know your new friends and making time to relax are very important, so we have provided spaces around campus to allow you to do this. The modern, spacious grounds here have lots of different areas where you and your friends can socialise. The social hub of the college is the Dome, a large, recently refurbished indoor space with comfortable seating areas. Based right at the heart of the college, it is a great meeting place for you and your friends and we often hold events here, such as charity shows,

performances and fairs. The college also has a student common room, which is a large seated area close to the canteen and a great place to eat your lunch or meet up with friends.

Of course, in the summer you’re going to want to get outside and we have plenty of outdoor space for you to enjoy the sunshine, whether it’s eating lunch at a picnic table, relaxing on the field, or having a kick about on one of our football pitches.

If you want to catch up on some studying the Library has quiet study areas, and the IT Suite has computers which are available for all students to use.

All of the indoor communal areas are equipped with TVs which are on all day, so you can watch them during your breaks. We also use these to announce important and upcoming events at the college so that you are always in the know.

Students enjoy a frappuccino at our coffee bar, Refresh, which serves sandwiches, hot snacks, homemade cakes and ice cream, plus a full range of speciality teas, coffees and hot chocolates.


We have an appetising array of places to eat at Wilberforce College, so whatever your tastes, there will be something to suit you.

Refuel

Our main canteen, Refuel, serves a range of hot foods. The lunch menu changes every week, but it often features choices such as fish and chips, pasta, pizza, curries and jacket potatoes. Refuel opens at 8:15am, so you can get your breakfast here too. There are lots of options to choose from like cereal, pastries, toast or even a full English breakfast to make sure you start the day in the right way.

If you fancy a lighter option, we also have a salad bar which serves a range of paninis, sandwiches and customisable salads.

Refresh

In addition, we have our coffee bar, Refresh. As well as a selection of speciality teas and coffees, hot chocolate and homemade cakes, Refresh serves up a range of sandwiches and hot snacks to suit all tastes.

We also have a number of vending machines around the college, selling cold drinks and snacks, for those times when you have stayed late, or need an extra afternoon boost.

Enrichment

College isn’t just about your lessons and the subjects you study. There are lots of other great things you can get involved in. We call this ‘enrichment’. Being involved with enrichment activities at the college gives you the chance to make friends, have fun, develop new skills and be part of something different. Universities and employers place a high value on enrichment activities, so being involved can have benefits for your career and academic future too. Our programme provides a wide range of fun activities for everyone and you can do as many as you like. All enrichment activities are free, so there is no reason not to give them a go!

We have listed some of the activities available this year, but we are always open to new ideas as well. So, if there’s something that you want to try - from archery to karate - just let us know!

Events and fundraising

There is always something fun happening at Wilberforce College. Throughout the year there are all kinds of organised events taking place. We play host to a variety of fundraising fairs for different charities, from small bake sales, to days such as Children in Need or Comic Relief. We encourage students to get involved in any way they can – from performing and organising, to donating and taking part in activities.

Previously, students have karaoked their way through ‘Wilberfactor’, gunged our Principal and taken on the Sport Department in a tug of war. Check out our Facebook page for photos and news of the latest events at Wilberforce College.

Student Council

Every September, college turns political as students campaign for the role of President or Vice President of the Wilberforce College Student Council.

There are lots of different positions on the Student Council, such as Fundraising, Welfare or Finance. So whatever your interests are, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the running of the college and be a representative for other Wilberforce College students.

The Events Committee is another part of the Student Council, and gives more students the opportunity to be involved with college life, including getting stuck into the organisation of college parties!

Student Force

The Student Force is our team of highly dedicated and enthusiastic students who go above and beyond to publicise and promote the college at grassroots level.

Being a member of the Student Force gives students hands-on marketing and business experience, as the team works out and about in the community, speaking with future students at events and organising links with local businesses. The activities that the Student Force organise and take part in vary but you will be your own ‘bosses’ and choose when and where to represent your college, with all the support you need from the college marketing experts. Of course, you’ll also make lots of new friends and gain plenty of confidence and experience along the way, so what’s not to like?

Any student can apply to join the Student Force. You just need to be willing to work alongside a fun and friendly team of fellow students, as well as going the extra mile for your college!

The Student Force is managed and run by students who represent the college at all the best local events.

In 2012 a whole team of students made it to the BCS Championship Finals to compete in cross country running, swimming, squash and football.


Sport is extremely popular at Wilberforce College. We have rugby, football and netball teams who compete in the British Colleges Sport (BCS) Programme, with lots of opportunities for students at all levels to be involved. Fixtures are held every Wednesday afternoon, both home and away, as all students have Wednesday afternoons free.

In 2012 our sporting success was incredible. That year our netball team made it through to the quarter-finals of the BCS National League, one of our first team footballers represented and captained the BCS England Football Team, and a whole group of students made it to the BCS Championships in sports such as cross country, swimming and squash.

We support all of our students to strive and achieve their best in their chosen sport, providing transport and covering any competition entry fees to ensure that there are no barriers to participation.

In addition to the college teams, there are also plenty of other sport enrichment programmes that you could try out, including:

Student Services

If you have an issue affecting your studies, your finances or your life - no matter how big or small - you’re likely to find the answer at Student Services. Our experienced and supportive Student Services team have information about student transport, financial help and attendance issues and are always on hand to offer support and advice should you need it. We also have qualified counsellors available to support students who may be experiencing personal problems. The counsellor will listen to you and support you for as long as you need.

Study Support

If at any point you feel as though you’re struggling with any aspect of your course, our Study Support Tutors are available to help. They offer individual or small group tuition, as well as extra support in the classroom.

Time with a Study Support Tutor is available to all students at each and every ability level within the college. The support covers a variety of skills such

as essay writing, planning, organisation, interview techniques, functional skills and general help with coursework. We aim to help you to achieve the best results possible on all of your courses.

The college also has a team of Student Mentors, all exceptional former students who are now studying locally at university. The Student Mentors commit to spending Wednesday afternoons here at Wilberforce College to help you with your studies. If you would like to benefit from subject-specific support from the Mentors, you can speak with your teachers who will arrange for you to meet with them.

The personal tutor programme

Your personal tutor will meet you individually once every three weeks for a Learning Progress Meeting. This flexible meeting focuses on your needs at the time, such as how you are settling in at college or your university application.

You can also arrange to talk with your tutor in between scheduled meetings, and throughout the year you will have additional group tutorials. We

IT facilities

Students can now access their college desktop and emails any way, anytime, anywhere. As well as recently installing a brand new IT Suite with state-of-the-art facilities, the college has also implemented WiFi throughout the campus, so you can access your emails on your phone, tablet and laptop. A brand new cloud email and storage system – live@edu – also ensures that you get a 10GB inbox and 10GB SkyDrive storage. On top of this, you’ll also have remote access to all of the latest Microsoft Office programs, as well as up-to-date and industry standard Adobe Creative Suite software, so you can choose to work on projects and assignments at home and in your free time.

Our brand new Student Services area provides all students with a professional and welcoming place to talk through any problem or query. Please call in any time!

We understand that students often have questions about how much college is going to cost. Don’t worry! There are no enrolment fees to pay, and attending college is completely free for students aged 16 to 18 (you must be aged under 19 on the 1st September 2013). We also provide all course materials free of charge and exam entry fees are taken care of for you as part of the course.

For those students who may need extra financial help, the college runs a bursary and award scheme. More information on this can be found at Student Services.

We try to keep the cost of attending college as low as possible for all students to make sure that you won’t have any money worries during your time here. The college also subsidises lots of different products and services for you, such as food, stationery, clothing (e.g. college hoodies) and buses . We also pay any costs arising (such as entry and transport fees) for students who


excel in competitions, such as the British Colleges Sport events.

So, don’t worry, there are several sources of financial help available, which could help you meet the cost of college, depending on your individual circumstances.

College Bursary Award

For students who need financial help to continue with their studies, a College Bursary is available. Any student at Wilberforce College who meets the criteria is eligible to apply for the full Bursary Award. The bursary is worth £135 a month (total £1200) and is open to students in care, leaving care, in receipt of income support or in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance.

College Maintenance Allowance

Students who received free school meals in Year 11 at school are eligible to apply for College Maintenance Allowance. There is also some provision for students

who were not on free school meals, but who come from a low income family. For example:

If you received free meals in Year • 11 or if your household income is below £16,190, you could receive up to £50 per month.

If your household income is between • £16,190 and £23,000, you could receive up to £20 per month.

Receipt of these payments is based on students having no unauthorised absences, and will be paid directly into the student’s bank account.

Hardship Fund

Students who are experiencing exceptional financial hardship can apply for additional assistance through Student Services, where their circumstances and eligibility will be assessed on an individual basis.

Buses

Five dedicated buses run to and from Wilberforce College. The W1, W2, W3 and W4 cost a maximum of 50p per single journey. As well as these dedicated services, we have added the new 10W service for students travelling from West Hull. This is a Stagecoach service, so students can use Megariders, which are available from the college for a subsidised price of £5. If you use a Megarider to get to and from college everyday this will equate to each journey costing just 50p, use it more often and your journeys will be even cheaper!

As well as selling subsidised Stagecoach Megariders, the college now sells East Yorkshire Hull Plus weekly tickets for the subsidised price of £5. This means that all students in Hull, Hessle, Cottingham, Willerby, Kirk Ella and Anlaby can travel to and from college for no more than 50p per journey by using one of these tickets.

Many Stagecoach and East Yorkshire buses pass the college every day, so please visit our website to find up-to-date information.

Parking

If you drive a car or motorbike there is some student parking available in front of the college. You will just need to apply to get a free parking permit by visiting Student Services.

Cycling

Many of our students cycle to college, so we have just installed a large secure cycle compound with a thumb print scanner. You will be given your student ID card at the beginning of term and then you just need to register your cycle for free at Student Services.

At Wilberforce College, we offer a series of specially developed programmes to help students achieve their career goals. These cover a wide variety of career paths, including medicine, veterinary science, teaching and law. Students taking part will get the extra support and specialist experience needed to get relevant university places and take the next step towards their dream jobs. As well as this, all students have access to individual careers guidance and support whenever they need it, at any time throughout their course.

Although qualifications are key factors in getting a great job or going on to university, we also understand the importance of work experience. The college works hard to forge links with local and national companies to help our students get industry placements, or find a suitable job relevant to their area of study.

This is the traditional Level 3 route to university, and also highly regarded by employers. We offer over thirty subjects at A Level and AS Level, so there is a wide range of subjects for you to choose from. It takes two years to complete the full A Level, but after the first year you will have gained stand-alone AS Level qualifications. You will usually begin with four AS Level choices in your first year and go on to complete three subjects in the second year, leaving college with three complete A Levels and one AS Level. Some students who have excelled at GCSE choose to undertake five AS Levels, or to continue with four A Levels, and this can be discussed with college staff at enrolment.

To study A Levels you need to achieve at least five grade Cs or above at GCSE. Some A Levels may require specific grades being attained at GCSE, but this will be discussed with you at interview. To give you the widest possible range of options, you should aim to achieve a C grade or better in English Language and Mathematics.

Experience life through a lens, make digital art, and take a creative approach with your camera.

You will explore a variety of specialist techniques to transform you into an insightful and effective photographer, developing your own responses to themes that you choose and producing photographic images that are unique and personal to you. All of the basics of digital photography will be taught on this course, so no prior photography knowledge is required – you don’t even need to have your own camera!

This course will challenge you both intellectually and creatively, allowing you to delve into formal elements of photography, whilst expressing your artistry by creating an original set of work. You will also go beyond digital approaches, experimenting in darkroom and pinhole approaches, as well as visiting galleries and photographing on location. Digital Photography students find that this course unlocks their articulate side and creates opportunities across a wide range of courses and careers.

ArtFine ArtA Level

If you want to shape your future and add texture to your studies, A Level Fine Art offers you the opportunity to develop your skills in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, digital imaging and print media.

You will cultivate your own ideas, work from observation, and appreciate the work of both well known and obscure artists. Skills developed will prepare you to understand visual arts, leading the way for you to interpret images and make informed personal comments.

This is a hands-on course that will enable you to build impressive sketchbooks full of enchanting images and ideas, whilst taking up exciting opportunities to work on a large-scale canvas, visit art galleries and take part in life drawing classes. Fine Art students also find that this qualification is an important asset in gaining a place on an art or photography-based degree or foundation course.

Take a fascinating and vibrant look at the past, travel along the passage of time and explore either medieval or modern history.

You will study contrasting countries and time periods, examining historical sources and the work of historians. You will be responsible for your own learning and development as you will carry out independent research, self-directed learning, project management, and reflection. The assessment on this course will focus on your ability to manage, develop, record and realise your project, as well as your application of transferable and key skills.

This is a course that is equivalent to half an A Level and it is valued by universities and employers because it encourages you to research and analyse material independently, so it will demonstrate that you are a more critical and reflective learner. This qualification will develop and provide evidence of the skills that higher education establishments are looking for and you will have the added confidence to work independently and creatively.

Most students start work over the summer holidays, after their first year is complete, so it won’t interfere with your studies. You will be able to find out more about the Extended Project Qualification and getting involved during the Spring Term.

BTECs are practical, vocational courses which will lead you to further study at university, or employment within a particular occupational area. You learn and are assessed by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, rather than being assessed by formal exams.

To study BTEC Level 3 you need to achieve at least four grade Cs or above at GCSE in at least three subjects. Some courses require a grade C in a certain subject. College staff will advise you of any particular requirements when they meet you.

The types of Level 3 course are:

BTEC Level 3 Extended DiplomaThis two year course is worth three A Levels and carries full UCAS points for university. It is popular amongst school leavers who wish to pursue professions such as nursing, as the course offers thorough practical preparation for a professional degree course. The work placement element of this qualification is particularly valued by universities.

Vocational Level 3

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma This two year course is worth one full A Level and carries equivalent UCAS points for university. These courses can be combined with other Subsidiary Diplomas or A Levels. You will gain a certificate after completing your first year, which is equivalent to one AS level (please note that Musical Theatre is a one year course).

BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma This one year course is a specific art qualification, which prepares students wishing to go on to study art or design-related subjects at university. It is the equivalent of two A Levels, but is only open to students who have already completed A Level or BTEC qualifications in an art-related subject. This qualification also carries UCAS points.

City & Guilds Level 3This two year course is a nationally recognised occupational award, which will give you the skills and experience you need to work in a particular area. As these courses are occupational awards, they do not carry UCAS points.

Prepare for a career in the world of business, gain practical insight into how products and services work and discover why business is so important for the economy.

This vocational course will prepare you for working in business and develop the skills which employers value and expect from workers. Taught by specialist staff, you will complete projects, investigate the nature of business and look at topics such as marketing, resources, communication, and internet retailing. You will also explore how to start a small business, write a marketing plan, and learn about human resources and business management.

This course uses a variety of learning activities, including visits to local or regional businesses, a two week work placement, and the opportunity to hear from experienced speakers who are industry experts. It is an ideal stepping stone to a job in business, which could include working in a retail environment, the public sector or within finance. You could then pursue further study at university in a business-related field, including marketing, finance or personnel.

Children’s Play, Learning & DevelopmentBTEC Level 3 (Extended)

If you can visualise yourself working with children and families, this engaging course will prepare you for a future in play, learning and development.

You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of childcare and education so that you develop the qualities required to work in the early years sector. This will include learning about child development, play, physical needs, communication, language, and health and safety. You will also complete up to eight hundred hours of practical training in an early years setting, which could take place at various organisations, from local primary schools to children’s centres and nurseries.

On this wide and varied curriculum, you will learn through organised visits so that you experience alternative approaches to education, culture and religion. Your teachers will engage you by using presentations, group tasks, case studies and practical sessions to support your learning. Design and make garments that can set a trend, and become skilled at creating clothing and accessories to a professional standard.

This course will enable you to develop your interest in fabric and advance your creative skills to produce your own work. You will be taught about materials, techniques and processes in fashion, including how to use media for drawing and visual communication. You will also explore ideas and concepts in art and design, and apply these to fashion - such as how different decades influence clothing design. Developing your own style and gaining competence in pattern construction, pattern cutting and garment making are also key aspects of this course.

This qualification provides significant experience for working in the textile and fashion industries, and there will also be opportunities to visit galleries, museums and learn about the history of art and design. It is also an excellent way of preparing you for the Foundation Diploma, which could guide you toward higher education courses.

Graphic Design & IllustrationBTEC Level 3 (Extended)

Be creative with your ideas, explore all aspects of illustration and shape your skills in drawing, sketching and painting.

This is a varied course where you will find new opportunities to develop your approaches to drawing, the study of art and design, information graphics, and the creative use of media. The social care sector is exciting and worthwhile. If you would like to help support people, care for their needs and build trusting relationships then this course is for you.

You will learn how to help people become increasingly independent and to have dignity and choice in their lives. Some of the topics that you will cover include communication, equality, the human body, nutrition, learning disabilities, and development through the life stages. Specialist units in the subject will range from studying risks of abuse to providing dementia care. As part of your studies you will also complete four separate weeks of work placements, which could be in a residential home, day care organisation, or an early years setting.

This is a course that facilitates learning through a combination of presentations, role play, discussions, reflection, observations and written documents. Previous students have either progressed on to university or have gained employment in the statutory and private sectors, working in a variety of settings from nurseries to residential and domiciliary care for the elderly, and with people with learning disabilities.

This course is suited to you if you enjoy performing, are interested in learning about music, and would like to engage with live sound and sound production.

This is a hands-on programme of study for which you should already have the ability to play a contemporary instrument, or the confidence to sing to a reasonable standard. You will have opportunities to record music, explore new styles and use computer software to learn technological audio skills. You will also study the elements of many different forms of music, as well as music in society and how to recognise recording faults. Taught and guided by specialist teachers, you will develop your creative approach and make quick progress with your technological and performing confidence.

The public services industry is one of the largest employers in the country. This vibrant vocational course could lead you toward one of the many careers in the public sector and uniformed services.

You will learn how government policies are developed and implemented to deliver a huge range of services to the public. This will be achieved through studying topics that include leadership, citizenship, police powers, law, custodial care, and fitness testing. You will also look at adventurous activities and have the opportunity to experience them for yourselves, such as the thrill of kayaking and the dizzy heights of rock climbing. Develop creative hairdressing skills and perfect the smooth running of a business on this practical course.

You will be taught in the college’s hairdressing salon and advance your current hairdressing ability. This could include creative cutting, colour techniques, styling, long hair work, and dressing hair. You will also learn how a salon works, including sharpening up your communication skills, health and safety knowledge, technical service, client consultation ability, and the effective running of a hairdressing business.

This is a course that mixes salon-based practical assignments with some classroom learning. You will also have the opportunity to showcase your hairdressing skills at college events and shows throughout the year. Students should ideally have completed Level 2 Hairdressing already, and this course could then lead you on to an entry-level or trainee position at a hairdressing salon. You could aim to pursue a career as a hair stylist or salon manager, plus you could also seek opportunities in other places, such as hotels, care homes, hospitals, the fashion industry, or working as a mobile hairdresser.

Should you be inspired by the animal kingdom, this qualification could be the stepping stone for a fulfilling career caring for creatures great and small.

You will learn about the welfare of animals and develop your skills in looking after them. Teaching will take place in our on-site animal house, where you will work with and contribute to the caring of the large variety of small animals that live at the college. Lessons will include looking at animal welfare, retail practices and animal biology, and you will also take part in visits to local employers who use animals as a significant part of their business.

This course is excellent preparation for employment in the animal industry or entry to a higher level study of animal welfare. It is an ideal starting point if you would like to study animal care further, and it could then launch you on the pathway to an exciting future in veterinary science or as a carer, animal nutritionist, or zoo keeper.

Art & DesignBTEC Level 2

Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for a variety of art and design-based work, such as product design, photography and digital art.

You will use your imagination and gain new skills in 2D and 3D communication, where you will look at ways in which artists and designers use drawing, mark-making, photography and construction skills. You will also learn to use media with sensitivity and creativity, understanding how to make images that show that you can think as an individual. Exploring ideas is also a key element of this course, so you will learn how to research and develop your own ideas for a final major project.

This course could lead you on to other programmes of study at the college, such as a Level 3 art and design course, or compatible media subjects. By the time you complete this qualification, you will have built up your creative skills and learnt to enjoy seeing new approaches in art. Studying Art & Design could lead to a broad range of creative professions, from teaching to interior design, and from advertising to artist.



ChildcareBTEC Level 2

If you are seeking a career working with babies and children, this course will give you the basic knowledge and understanding of childcare and education.

You will learn the theory and practice of looking after children from birth to aged 16 years. This is a course that is well suited to students who have an interest in creating and exploring a variety of media products. You will also find out about the media sector, learn how to pitch your own ideas and how to understand audiences. Creative Media Production is suitable for anyone with an interest in creating and exploring filmmaking, print and website design. Following the course you could progress on to Level 3 study at the college or seek training or employment in a creative profession.

EngineeringBTEC Level 2

Gain the specialist knowledge and experience required when starting out on the rewarding journey to a career in engineering.

You will spend three days a week at Wilberforce College, where you will cover the units required to undertake practical work, including mathematics and interpreting engineering drawings. Two days each week will be spent at Cityworks Training, where you will acquire all of the skills needed to work successfully in an engineering workshop. This work will lead you to designing and producing your own vice and toolbox – objects to keep and use in your future career.

Clothing and minibus transport to and from the college to Cityworks will be provided free of charge. You may also choose to study GCSEs in Mathematics or Science, or an AS Level in Product Design alongside this course. If you’re a caring person and enjoy helping people, a career in health and social care could be the vocation for you.

You will develop the skills and knowledge required to work in the health and social care sector. This will include topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Human Lifespan Development, Individual Needs in Health, and the Impact of Diet on Health. Through both practical learning and classroom theory, you will also learn about communication, individual rights, cultural diversity, and how to ensure safe environments in health and social care.

On completion of this qualification you will be able to apply for jobs in a variety of settings, including pursuing professions such as a care worker, home care assistant, or nursery assistant. If you would like to advance your studies further, you will also have the option to progress on to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care.

InformationTechnologyBTEC Level 2

Gain a sound introduction to computing with this work-related course, which is vocationally relevant for the IT industry.

You will gain an insight into seven different areas of information technology, studying wide and varied topics that will give you a good grounding across many different units. You will look at subjects that include computer graphics, IT security, computer systems, control systems, and installing hardware components. This is a very practical course that will prepare you to move into the IT sector, and you will also learn about communication and the different roles and professions available in the workplace. Your learning will include a mix of formal lessons, practical workshops, and assignment workshops.

This course will prepare you for an entry-level role in IT or business and it is also ideal for progression on to a Level 3 course, with a view to studying at university in the future. Professions to consider in the IT industry include games designer, IT technician and web developer.

Public ServicesBTEC Level 2

If you’re considering a career delivering services to the public, this dynamic course will let you aim high and gain skills for life.

You will develop the knowledge and specific skills required to work within modern public service organisations. This includes discovering what people in uniformed services do in their job roles, how they work, and how they interact with each other. This is a flexible course that mixes practice with theory and topics include Health & Fitness, Adventurous Activities, Crime & its Effects, and Security in the Public Services. There will also be many opportunities to take part in practical activities, such as skiing, rock climbing, mountain bike riding, and kayaking.

This course could lead to many careers within the public sector and services, including the police, fire service, army, navy, RAF, ambulance service, coastguard and many office-based government jobs. Following the successful completion of this qualification, you could also advance your studies by progressing on to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services.

Challenge yourself with this active course, which aims to further your interest in sport and prepare you for a future in health and fitness.

You will gain a strong insight into the various vocational aspects of the sport industry, from both practical and theory-based approaches. Lessons will include use of the college’s brand new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and your learning will take the form of practical assessments, case studies, projects and presentations. Some of the themes that you will examine include fitness testing, training, anatomy, physiology, injuries, personal fitness, and the effect of energy on the body systems.

This course is ideal for those with practical sporting ability who are looking for a future in the industry, including occupations based in gyms, leisure organisations, activity centres and fitness retail. Following successful completion you may also choose to progress on to BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, where you will further advance your skills and knowledge of the subject.



Travel& TourismBTEC Level 2

Explore a career that will take you places and learn the skills and knowledge required to work in the vocational travel and tourism sector.

You will find out how the fast-growing travel and tourism industry works and why it is such an important sector of the economy. This will include developing skills which employers value and expect from workers of the future, such as customer service, knowledge of UK and European destinations, and an understanding of the nature and effects of world travel. There will also be various opportunities to discover more about the industry through talking to people already working in travel and from taking part in visits to tourism organisations.

This course combines theory with practical learning and you will also have the opportunity to undertake a work placement, which will help you to acquire relevant employability skills. You could then progress on to BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel & Tourism or pursue a wide range of future occupations, such as with airlines, travel operators, or tour guides.

HairdressingCity & Guilds Level 2

Trained hairdressers are always in demand and this is a course where you will gain the skills and experience for a fashionable future in the art of hair styling.

You will be trained in the college’s impressive training salon, where you will learn about the practice of hairdressing. This will include undertaking a wide variety of exciting topics, such as client consultation, cutting women’s hair, colour and lighten, perm and neutralise, scalp massage, shampoo and condition of the hair and scalp, the art of dressing hair, as well as health and safety practices in the salon.

Your experienced teachers will help you, both in the classroom and in the salon, to develop the essential skills and personal qualities required to successfully perfect your hairdressing ability. This is a course that could lead to a variety of careers in hairdressing, including as a hair technician, senior stylist or salon manager.
